*** UPDATED x2 - Ives “misunderstood the question” - Endorsed Cruz *** Ives says no campaign outreach to President Trump that she knows of

Posted in:

* You’d think Rep. Jeanne Ives would be doing everything she could to get the President involved in her primary. Yeah, it won’t help her in the general election, but you win one election at a time and that new TV ad of hers isn’t gonna help in the general, either. Donald Trump received over a half million primary votes here last year and Rauner consistently dodges questions about him. From the City Club’s question and answer period today

Question: Rauner distanced himself from President Trump. Is there communication with President Trump for support in your campaign?

Ives: Not that I know of.

Ives went on to say she voted for Trump in the primary and had his sign in her yard.

She also praised Trump’s handling of the military, “and restoring conference in their commander in chief.” She said she had “full confidence” in the President.

*** UPDATE 1 *** As mentioned above, Ives was specifically asked today how she voted in the Republican presidential primary and she said she voted for Trump. Click here for the video clip which was provided by a certain helpful someone who also passed along a link to this press release from March of 2016

Today, the Cruz for President campaign announced the endorsement of Illinois State Representative Jeanne Ives.

That certain helpful someone also said this: “What happened to ‘I don’t lie cheat or steal or tolerate those that do’?”

*** UPDATE 2 *** From the Ives campaign…

Rich,

Jeanne simply misunderstood the question about who she supported in the primary.

She has really only ever been asked if she supported Trump in 2016. For some reason, she is rarely asked about who she supported in the primary.

Not a lie, just a misunderstanding.

Thank you.

Best,

Kathleen

* This might make the headlines, however…

Audience member says the transgender depiction in ad was offensive. Ives says it is an "accurate representation." #twill

“What’s so offensive about the ad?” Ives asks, calling it an accurate “visual representation” of the policies Rauner put in place. “The transgender man, that’s typically what a transgender man looks like.” Man in audience says “no it’s not” She says yes, they’ve showed at my door

This began a short back-and-forth exchange between Ives and some members of the audience, with one man saying something like “you ask what’s offensive,” that inaccurate portrayal of a transgender man in a dress is offensive https://t.co/GauN7SYC3s

— Amanda Vinicky (@AmandaVinicky) February 5, 2018

Told by an audience member that it was, specifically, the representation of the transgender woman in the ad that was offensive, Ives responds: “That is an accurate representation of what the policy looks like on the ground.”

  1. ==The transgender man, that’s typically what a transgender man looks like==

Rep. Ives doesn’t get out much does she? She’s probably come across transgender individuals and not even known it. Some of you ask how her ad is offensive? She’s just shown why.

  2. She’s only going to get worse in the next 30 days.

Comment by TheInvisibleMan Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 1:27 pm

  3. I listened to Ives’ interview on NPR where she says she likes Trump because he is funding the military more. The administration is also borrowing almost a trillion dollars to do so this year.
So someone should ask her if she will fund Illinois more, the way Trump is funding the military, and borrow a lot of money to do so, just like Trump.

  4. I bet the world is a very scary place for Jeanne Ives

Comment by PJ Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 1:37 pm

  5. I suspect that, in Jeanne’s world, transgender individuals begin (and end) with Flip Wilson’s character “Geraldine”…circa 1970.

  6. ===I bet the world is a very scary place for Jeanne Ives===

With people like her in charge, it would be.

  7. –“That is an accurate representation of what the policy looks like on the ground.”–

Those are words put together in a complete sentence but I really don’t know what they mean, all together arranged like that.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 1:43 pm

  8. The add is not an accurate representation for two reasons: First, the bill Rauner signed did not protect the right of transgender persons to use the public bathrooms corresponding to their gender identity. So the ad is not about Rauner’s policy. Second, the actor in drag is a crude stereotype, much like a white guy in black face.

  9. *– You’d think Rep. Jeanne Ives would be doing everything she could to get the President involved in her primary. –

Doesn’t compute with me, either. I wonder if there are some polls floating around showing a dropoff in Trump support among likely GOP voters since the 2016 election.

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 1:46 pm

  10. I feel sorry for Jeanne Ives. She seems to be a very frightened individual.

  11. ==You’d think Rep. Jeanne Ives would be doing everything she could to get the President involved in her primary. ==

Maybe she is and just hasn’t gotten anywhere with it. She wasn’t shy about supporting or praising Trump.

Comment by Arsenal Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 1:51 pm

  12. I can’t wait til the primary is over so we (hopefully) don’t have to hear about her anymore. She introduces such poison into the debate.

Comment by Albany Park Patriot Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 1:51 pm

  13. I am honestly embarrassed for the republican party. Sad that this is what the LGBT community has to put up with. If someone else’s happiness offends you, too bad. //unless your happiness involves you being a nazi.

  14. Monty Python’s drag characters look more transgendered than the ad caricature!

    Comment by d.p.gumby Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 1:57 pm

  15. Ives endorsed Cruz…. and lied about supporting Trump. Shocking

Comment by Anonymous Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 2:01 pm

  16. “She introduces such poison into the debate.”

But for Dan Proft and Dick Uihlein, that’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

  17. That “accurate depiction of a transgender individual” looked a heck of a lot like Corporal Klinger to me . . . Maybe that’s where she gets her ideas–old reruns.

Comment by Ray del Camino Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 2:26 pm

  18. I know he is older but can Jim Thompson just start yelling at people or something. Need someone to bring some sense to the party at this point…

Comment by OneMan Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 2:30 pm

  19. Endorsed Cruz, but voted for Trump?

    Where’s the honor in that?

Comment by wordslinger Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 2:33 pm

  20. That audience member was me. I was genuinely offended by Jeanne Ives attempt to explain that she “couldn’t understand why anyone could possibly be offended by the ad.” She went through each of the characters and said, “That is an accurate representation of what the policy looks like on the ground.” When she said that about the transgendered person, I reacted loudly (and I was sitting in the front), “no it’s not.” We then got into it from there. It was her absurd proclamation of her innocence that I found so absurd. No sentient being could be that ignorant.

  21. Kudos Dave, more people need to give her the riot act.

  24. Ives surely just misspoke re primary vs. general. Well known she was Cruz supporter in primary.

    Comment by Chris P. Bacon Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 3:31 pm

  25. On this post and any other Ives centric post our own Oswego Willie was spot on. Ives helps Rauner. Ives makes Rauner look reasonable.

Ives is not helping rid the state of Rauner.

Comment by don the legend Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 3:40 pm

  26. Not only well known that Ives was Cruz supporter, her campaign now is largely refugees from that failed effort. One of her problems.

    Comment by Chris P. Bacon Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 3:56 pm

  27. I have yet to see any evidence of anyone spending tens of thousands of dollars to change their gender identify simply so they can get a peak-a-boo in a public restroom. While we’re on the topic, Republicans lost all credibility on this issue when they supported a pedophile for the U.S. Senate simply because they “wanted the seat.”

Comment by Just Me Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 4:02 pm

  28. ==Ives really is that bigoted.==

As true with all bigots, her ignorance exacerbates her prejudices.

  30. I also find it interesting the Tribune Editorial Board has remained silent about the inflammatory Ives ad. Where’s their outrage?

Comment by Wensicia Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 4:10 pm

  31. An illegal alien who had been deported twice killed an NFL player yesterday. That is what the “policy looks like on the ground.” Do you get it now wordslinger, or are you that dense?

Comment by Captain Obvious Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 7:09 pm

  32. With Trumps approval rating now at 49%, you would think Ives would jump on the bandwagon. By the end of the month, most paychecks will be larger and Ttumps approval rating may skyrocket to 49.1%. She would be wise to embrace him and leave Rauner pandering to a few RINO’s.

Comment by blue dog dem Monday, Feb 5, 18 @ 7:56 pm

  33. it is frightening watching and listening to her refer to how a a trans woman looks and that “they came to her door.” she is a bigot and casual about it. Ives is horrid.

Enlighten me, oh nondense one. What Indiana policy is Rauner’s fault here?
