* Gov. Rauner was at the Sun-Times today…
Asked what he would do if he could have one "do-over" from his first term, @GovRauner says he would have spent far more time communicating directly with the people of Illinois. (He says he'd do that by spending far more time with "you guys" - the media.)

Rauner was asked about what he would "do-over" in first term. One: "I would have spent far more time communicating directly to the people of Illinois and explaining what's going on." Two: Would work on trying to get Democrats to see his view, citing Ken Dunkin as an example.

There’s that “story-telling” stuff for the kabillionth time - also known as his “unhealthy obsession with media and messaging.” He’s never understood (to this day, apparently) that it wasn’t the messaging, it was all the unpopular stuff he was trying to do that hurt him. He couldn’t have spun his way through a two-year impasse. No how, no way.
Also, Dunkin is his template for success with legislators?
Sheesh.

That initial reaction is one of the most hilarious dodges I’ve seen a very long time. Mad props.
But the president’s rhetoric and tone are the biggest problems? This analysis from the same guy who calls most members of the General Assembly and the judiciary crooks? From the same man who just last week blasted an auditor general’s report as fake news even though his own agency had agreed to the recommendations? From the… oh, forget it. I ain’t got all day.

I assume Tina means Medicaid rehaul (like the behavioral health 1115 waiver, or the new consent decree), and not Medicare? Because I have no idea what that would be or why the guv is involved in it.

If Rauner can’t see that he largely got a pass from the media for his first 2.5 years, then he’s blind.
It took massive, willful damage to core state responsibilities, $12B in new unpaid bills, a House GOP revolt and the incredible incompetence of his IPI hires to wake them up.
I hope he realizes that he’s never going to have it that good, again. Too many lies for too long.

Actually, Jeanne Ives did a much better job yesterday in responding to the “what was Rauner’s biggest mistake in the first year?” It was a great question and she nailed it. This? And Ken Dunkin as a model? Wow.

Lets start here…
Rauner wanted more direct communication with the people…
… from a sitting governor who while in negotiating, allegedly in good faith, ran Ads during session calling those negotiating partners corrupt, in real time.
So that direct negative messaging had no caving occur, so it must’ve been the messaging, not the deal, that caused these alleged negotiations to fail?
That’s just “one”…. where should we go next…

That is a funny response from Rauner. He wanted to talk more to the people via the press? How many times did he respond to questions with “I’m not going to negotiate with/via the press.”

Let’s talk “Decatur”
Going after all Labor, huge mistake.
Rauner coulda got something easier by keeping it about public sector labor (less first responders) and discussed how the trades and first responders differ, but public sector labor is what ails Illinois.
Nope.
Rauner brought a PowerPoint to Decatur, to personally sell a message that all Labor makes too much money and RTW is his to push… all done by him, messaging his labor destruction plan.

Rauner again demonstrates he is not learning.
He was used to negotiating deals where he could walk away if he did not get what he wanted. He was also used to negotiating only once with a person. Now he has to deal with the same people in multiple negotiations and he can’t just walk away. It is a different world and he has not adapted.

Rauner doesn’t need to change, the world needs to change to meet his successfulness. Um…at least I think that’s how the song goes.

Ok… Leader Radogno vs. Ken Dunkin…
You have a Caucus Leader, your Leader going to editorial board to editorial board with the President of the Illinois Senste, her counterpart, to tout compromises and bargains, and working together to give Rauner wins and Dems celebrating compromise.
Ken Dunkin continually was a vote to stop overrides to save Illinois from a hostage situation that was exacerbated… “why?” … because Rauner’s own policies on their own… couldn’t get 60 and 30…
Leader Radogno resigned after being undercut and made to feel her work wasn’t appreciated by the Governor she was trying to help.
Ken Dunkin, with the the help of IOP, Matt Besler, and Fam Proft’s shell of ILGO to create Raunerites, was defeated at the polls by a Democrat who ran as a candidate to defeat a Raunerite…
That’s a two-fer failure with the same thick-headed thinking…

Bruce doesn’t have a particularly close relationship with Trump but needs Trump’s help with Medicare overhaul. Some might see this as a problem.

As near as I can tell, he’s spent most of his time giving speeches. Sounds like direct communication to me. It’s not that he didn’t directly communicate- it’s that he communicated bad ideas. He chose to recite a laundry list of pipe dreams, and bashing Madigan while accomplishing nothing but destroying social services, universities, medical providers and destroying employees credit ratings due to overdue medical bills.

So the Guv who has been successful at everything he has ever done, and is the smartest guy in the room, is basically saying us regular folks are not smart enough to understand he is looking out for our best interests, and that we should all endeavor to be as enlightened as Ken Dunkin.

While that’s a lame answer, it’s pretty much the most common one for politicians. And you understand why. They can’t really admit that the policies they pushed were wrong, or that they made some material failure of management. So all that’s left is to say that you dropped the ball on the politics of it all.

After 36 innings, the turnaround score is 0 for 44.
W errors too numerous to mention, leaving his team bloodied.
The scholarship program was a late, surprise, pop up.
His solution? Change of course? No. Different priorities? No.
More of the same. The best evidence of that was rich’s comparison of identical priorities stated in each state speech.
This isnt admirable persistence, it is bullheaded stupidity.

Arsenal is on point.
When some politicians aren’t successful in getting their agendas passed, they don’t re-evaluate their positions, they blame the Communications team.
“If only we communicated better and people really knew what I was trying to do, I’d have more support.”
That’s not the problem here.
