Dan Biss says he’s a proven progressive. But he’s taken money from big banks. And Biss voted with Republicans in Springfield and voted to let the state garnish wages when people fall behind on student loans.
Dan Biss, take a look for yourself.
* Bill synopsis…
Amends the Higher Education Student Assistance Act. Authorizes the Illinois Student Assistance Commission to deduct from the salary, wages, commissions, and bonuses of any employee in this State and, as otherwise permitted, any employee outside the State of Illinois by serving a notice of administrative wage garnishment on an employer for the recovery of a student loan debt owned or serviced by the Commission. Provides that levy must not be made until the Commission has caused a demand to be made on the employee such that the employee is provided an opportunity to contest the existence or amount of the student loan obligation. Effective immediately.
I pulled up the roll call and all but two House members who voted against that bill were Democrats.

In a desperate attempt to change the subject away from his racially offensive discussions about African-American elected officials with disgraced former Governor Rod Blagojevich, JB Pritzker is once again attacking Daniel Biss. The new attack ad comes on the same day polling shows Biss is the stronger candidate to beat Governor Bruce Rauner in the general election.
“Pritzker’s panic continues,” said Abby Witt, campaign manager for the Biss campaign. “In JB’s latest sloppy attack ad, the billionaire venture capitalist claims to be better on reducing student debt and college costs than the middle-class father whose family recently finished paying off student loans and who passed the Student Loan Bill of Rights into law this year.
“It’s clear JB will say anything to deflect attention from the constant drumbeat of negative stories about him. JB can reinvent Daniel’s record all he wants, but voters know Daniel is a proven progressive who’ll fight for working families. The same can’t be said for JB Pritzker, whose record remains as elusive as his tax returns.”
OK, except notice the Biss folks didn’t address the substance of the ad.

The pension thief, also wants to garnish wages. Bliss just doesn’t want to leave other peoples money alone. Makes me wonder what he will want from taxpayers if he were to get elected.

The Pritzker Crew is going by 15 second intervals the patterned attack ad pointed at a specific item that they (athe Pritzker Crew) want highlighted, the way they want it seen.
Can’t have too many frills in 15 seconds…
Can they package all this to an over-arching theme to go at and to Biss.
They need these ads.
It’s now or never.
Get after Rauner too.

Biss might have the detest of the unions almost as much as Rauner. The difference is Bliss as Governor could get this accomplished the unions won’t like. With Rauner in the unions have no worries about any anti union accomplishments

I’m not sure how Biss is fooling some folks. He spoke at a number of Hillary events and his positions on things like college and healthcare were a 180 from what he is running on today. He’s basically just taken Bernie’s platform and cut and pasted it, but his record does not back up his newfound ideology.
This is yet more proof. He sided with the GOP and banks over destitute student loan borrowers. That isn’t progressive.

Would JB prefer ISAC pursue unpaid loans in court, ruining people’s credit in the process? Or would he want to destabilize ISAAC and jeopardize it’s ability to continue making loans?
Because that was the status quo before this bill. Governing is more complicated than signing a check or holding a sign at a march.

If you go back and look at the debate on the bill, it was the strong progressive leaders of Jack Franks and Ken Dunkin leading the charge against, and one of the reasons that they gave was that they didn’t think that ISAC should be able to get their money before the banks did.

The phenomenon of Biss running as the outsider champion of the Sanders voters is curious in light of his well-documented political history and voting history.
But many (most?) of Dan’s supporters seem to accept him as exactly that.

I think this is perfect. Ask voters to check for themselves. Everybody has the google right at their finger tips. Biss’ record doesn’t match his progressive talking points.
No need to try for a catchy theme when you treat voters like adults who can think for themselves.

To me this is the best of the hits so far. Biss voted with Republicans to allow banks to garnish student wages so the banks get theirs. He was one of only two Democrats to do so. That’s a big deal that completely flies in the face of who he’s pretending to be. They should go much harder on this one.

I suppose the ad is good insofar as well produced. But I don’t see any of the info in these spots sticking. 15 seconds is too short to retain anything. If you aren’t paying attention when the ad starts you’ll miss half of it. Ultimately it boils down to will any of these 15 second spots move the needle? I highly doubt it.

When it comes to defeating Rauner, I’m not going to crucify Biss over his pension votes. If Biss is the nominee and labor doesn’t fully back him and instead has puritopians a la Sanders vs. Clinton and Quinn vs. Rauner to sabotage Biss’ chances, it deserves whatever Rauner will bring.
I believe that if Pritzker is serious about beating Rauner, he should be fully prepared to financially back Biss or Kennedy. Be the Ken Griffin of the Democratic gubernatorial candidate.

I did what JB asked and looked up the bill. If I’m reading this correctly, the bill passed the senate basically unanimously, 56 yeas and 0 nays with 3 not voting. Is JB ready to say every Democratic state senator is a fake progressive over this?

I understand that the pension bill issue and Biss voting with Republicans with respect to the garnishing wages issue is a very hot topic in some circles against Biss. I get that, especially from reading CapFax daily. I wonder, though, if those specific topics are sufficiently hot along a broad cross-section of Democratic voters statewide for this ad to be very effective- right now within the political milieu it is inhabiting. For this reason I give the ad 2 different grades.
If the ad is primarily to prevent current JB supporters from slipping away during this weird time I’ll give it a B+.
If the ad is to entice into JB’s corner badly needed undecided voters or voters who are already leaning toward Biss then I give it a D.

Looks like minority legislators were near unanimous in opposition. Biss’s insensitivity to the needs of people of color is reflected in his lack of support in those communities.
Progressive? Not in my book.

If this is the least progressive thing Biss has done in his legislative career, I’d say he’s still pretty credible than pritzker. He voted for protections for student loan holders earlier this year, and was involved in all kinds of progressive things like medicaid expansion, same-sex marriage, banning questions about salary history and criminal convictions on job applications, recording police officers, immunity for people seeking treatment for drug overdoses, the list goes on. Biss’s record is good but imperfect. JB’s record does not exist. I know which one is more appealing to me.

I wouldn’t go that far. If you study his voting record, he’s pretty much been a standard dem his whole career. It’s only since the rise of Bernie that Dan has claimed the progressive mantle. There is a lot of stuff that isn’t very progressive in Biss’ background, and you can be sure that a Rauner-funded “progressive” group will make this case against him in Facebook feeds and on twitter. So much so that by November progressives will wonder if he’s even a dem, much less a progressive. But, if Dan can keep those folks motivated and they actually show up on Election Day instead of pouting over purity (which has always been the problem with the far-left), he should be able to beat Bruce handily.
The biggest worry for progressives about Biss shouldn’t be his history, it should be his being a drain on state and national party resources. Gov is going to hammer him early and often over his ties to Madigan, and that’s gonna be a killer over the summer if Biss doesn’t up his fundraising game.

Daniel Biss doesn’t seem to believe in anything except himself. His record proves it. Maybe he WOULD make a formidable opponent against Rauner, as they are alike in this regard.
