Former Pritzker staffer speaks out with new boss

Posted in:

* NBC 5

Kina Collins stepped down from her role as Pritker’s field organizer after a scandal broke out last week regarding tapes that surfaced of Pritzker making controversial comments about African-American leaders. […]

“I knew I would disappoint my community more had I stayed,” Collins said.

“As great as apologies are, I don’t necessarily think we have to elect you into the highest position in Illinois,” she said. […]

Collins said she has no plans to give up on politics and has been hired by Sameena Mustafa, a democratic candidate running for Congress in the 5th Congressional District opposing Mike Quigley.

“We are in a moment where it’s not just to say we want women and women of color to show up at the polls,” Mustafa said. “We need to hire them, we need to elect them, that’s where we’re at, it is that ‘times up’ moment about parity.”

  1. You have to admire the guts of someone who will walk away from a gig with one of the richest men in the world on principle.

Not the textbook way to shake the money tree in the private sector.

To thine own self be true. Very admirable.

  2. wordslinger, couldn’t agree more. Reminds me of rauner’s counsel resigning on principle. Others stayed. Those who stayed are doing very well. And his former counsel is . . . nowhere . . . still looking for work. Should’ve stayed and kept collecting his high gov salary.

  3. Anon, I have no idea what the deal was with Rauner’s counsel. Collins, on the other hand, is laying it all out in public.

  4. Smart move. If her group, the Chicago Neighborhood Alliance, is to maintain credibility in their target neighborhoods, best to keep some distance between her and JB.

  5. Somewhat related info:

    Sameena Mustafa supports Universal HealthCare.

    Mike Quigley does not.

It’s one thing to leave in protest, it’s another to go out of your way to say…

“…I don’t necessarily think we have to elect you into the highest position in Illinois,”

That is… wow… that’s also trying to put on notice that you (she) don’t (doesn’t) think you are worthy and it’s beyond just a break.

    “Power” words to a moment.
