Ives, Kennedy up with two new ads

Posted in:

* Tribune

With a month to go before the March 20 primary, several statewide candidates are trying to ramp up their campaigns with a wave of television ads as voters start to tune in to the approaching election.

On Monday, governor hopefuls Jeanne Ives, a Republican, and Chris Kennedy, a Democrat, launched new TV spots […]

On the Republican side, in recent days Rauner has turned his attention away from Pritzker and toward his GOP primary challenger, Ives, a three-term Wheaton representative whom he earlier sought to dismiss as a “fringe” candidate. Now Rauner is employing his most-turned-to political attack, seeking to link Ives to Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, his chief political nemesis.

In response, Ives is up with a new ad in which a narrator calls her the only candidate for governor who “consistently fights for Illinois taxpayers.”

* The Trib linked to an older Rauner ad, but here is a newer one that uses footage of Ives appearing to defend Speaker Madigan

Ouch.

* Here’s the Ives ad

* Script…

Only one candidate for Governor consistently fights for Illinois taxpayers.

(Ives): Our economy is too weak for a tax hike, and you know it. You know we need jobs. You complain about it all the time. And you won’t fix our job creation problems.

That’s why the tax watchdog group, Tax Accountability, endorsed Jeanne Ives over Bruce Rauner.

And made her the first State Representative to earn a perfect score from the group.

Jeanne Ives: The consistent conservative for Illinois Governor.

* Here is Kennedy’s new ad

That’s his best ad yet.

Kennedy gave his campaign another $250K a few days ago. But he still trails the pack.

* Script…

I come from a family that has embraced the notion that we are all in this together. I’m Chris Kennedy. I’m running for governor because I’ve seen the potential of this state. Then I’ve seen the failings of the government.

The state needs to change. We have to make sure that education is paid for at the state level, and not through local property taxes.

I believe in building things up, not in tearing things down. I believe that compromise is not surrender.

I know this is doable, I know that we can do it. Let’s go where we need to go.

  1. That Ives keeps churning out ads is starting to make me think this is real.

  2. Solid ad by Kennedy.
    Ives will make the primary entertaining.

  3. Ives defending Madigan on tape? She gave Rauner the rope to hang her. Silly, silly move.

    Comment by downstate Tuesday, Feb 20, 18 @ 11:06 am

  4. Solid ads by both Ives and Kennedy. Brief and to the point.

  5. “Ives defending Madigan on tape?”

    I’m 90% sure if we heard the whole comment from Ives, we would hear her saying that Rauner keeps blaming Madigan rather than owning his own failures to get things done. I am sure she regrets her wording made it easy for them to edit her comments.

    I do like the irony of them using her comments about how Rauner blames Madigan too much for his own shortcomings to make an ad to blame Madigan.

  6. To the Kennedy Ad,

    This is the campaign I thought they woulda ran weeks and months ago…

    … that’s right… they’re “broke”.

    The ad is truly a “Kennedy” ad, and all that means generationally. The property tax thingy muddies the water, but big visions, governing, compromise, looking out for their fellow citizens…

    Kennedy needed 12 weeks and $8 million on TV during those 12 weeks… with the overreaching thematic ads, whew, that woulda been a he&@ of a campaign.

    Now we get the “Microwave Dinner” version of that Kennedy strategy that made total sense to me;

    Thaw… heat quickly, serve fast and hot, hope it’s edible.

  7. After tearing into Pritzker and Madigan for months, I doubt Kennedy’s sincerity that he wants to build things up and compromise.

    Comment by A Jack Tuesday, Feb 20, 18 @ 11:23 am

  8. In the last few weeks, it seems like Kennedy has decided that “Kennedy” is enough to get it done.

  9. Rauner’s claim that Ives would be a Madigan candidate is flately unbelievable.

  10. To the Rauner ad against Ives-

    That selective editing should be used by the Ives campaign against Rauner. A “Rauner Lies…” ad showing the complete quotes from the Trib Ed Board session would be most appropriate.

  11. Wow, that Rauner ad is an amazing work of fiction.

    Comment by Anon0091 Tuesday, Feb 20, 18 @ 11:43 am

  12. In Kennedy’s defense, the only positive in his candidacy is “remember who my dad and uncle are?”

    Comment by MissingG Tuesday, Feb 20, 18 @ 11:44 am

  13. Also, I love that the Ives ad notes that she’s the “first representative to receive a perfect score”
    as it shows her and Peter Breen both with 100%

    Peter Breen for Governor!

  14. ==In the last few weeks, it seems like Kennedy has decided that “Kennedy” is enough to get it done.==

    Or it’s all he’s got left. Never could raise money even as well as a State Senator, no organization to speak of, and his “Joe Berrios sucks” message oddly never caught that statewide fire.

    Comment by Arsenal Tuesday, Feb 20, 18 @ 12:01 pm

  15. Does Rauner really think that Ives voters will fall for that?

    Comment by Soccermom Tuesday, Feb 20, 18 @ 12:27 pm

  16. I don’t know how many potential GOP primary voters are persuadable, but I doubt that many of them can be persuaded that Ives is in the tank for Madigan.

    But Rauner has been a one-trick pony for years now. A remarkably dishonest pony.

    Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Feb 20, 18 @ 12:36 pm

  17. Kennedy’s ad is a positive, hopeful but not saccharine piece. it feels like a closing ad but it is more than that. like it.

    Most people still don’t know who Ives is - transgender ad or not. She stepped in traps of her own making by defending Madigan. This is a sound bite world. Open mouth, place foot.

    Comment by downstate Tuesday, Feb 20, 18 @ 12:40 pm

  19. FWIW, I live in the Peoria market and I have seen the Rauner anti Ives ad more than any other ad this season. Sometimes three times during an evening newscast.

    But as others have pointed out, who is it going to influence? You don’t have to be a computer wiz to recognize that the Ives’ quotes are severly edited.

    Comment by G'Kar Tuesday, Feb 20, 18 @ 1:16 pm

  20. That is a great hit piece on Jeanne Ives. Well played Rauner camp.

    Comment by Saluki Tuesday, Feb 20, 18 @ 1:20 pm

  21. Polling must be showing that Ives is quickly making up ground to Rauner for him to go this negative all the sudden. I don’t believe he ever mentioned her as a candidate until about three weeks ago.

  22. Who is “Tax Accoutability”. I have been unable to Google that group.

    Comment by Da Big Bad Wolf Tuesday, Feb 20, 18 @ 3:29 pm

  23. The Ives ad is very solid and speaks to what she should be speaking to all the time.

    The Kennedy ad is excellent. It’s the first time we’ve seen him not stuttering or stumbling through it and speaking with some confidence. Whoever that director is needs to stick around. That person is presenting the best Chris there is.

    Both very, very good.

  24. State cuts road funding to local govt.in Illinois. Then Bruce Raunner makes proclamation to increase truck weights on roads to buy the Farm Bureau vote. Newsflash Bruce roads are not built by proclamation. Raunner wants to freeze property taxes and shift expenses to local so he can hire $200000 a year advisors for state govt.
