Question of the day

Posted in:

* Except for the fact that the ad-maker should have put the candidate’s name on-screen a whole lot more, this has become my favorite TV ad of the primary cycle.

Monticello Republican Randy Keith is vying to replace retiring GOP Rep. Bill Mitchell. He’s up against two candidates, one of them, Dan Caulkins, has benefited from $200,000 in spending by Dan Proft’s Liberty Principles PAC, which is why Chicago is mentioned at the beginning

That’ll scare the fish!

I must’ve watched that ad 20 times already.

* The Question: What’s your favorite campaign TV ad of all time? Explain.

  1. That’s awesome! Can I cross over and vote for just this one guy?

Comment by Chicago Cynic Friday, Mar 9, 18 @ 2:54 pm

  2. BTW, can’t wait to see Proft’s hit piece. “Randy Keith, a really bad fisherman!”

Comment by Chicago Cynic Friday, Mar 9, 18 @ 2:55 pm

  3. I am old enough to remember the 1964 “Daisy” ad.

As powerful, memorable and timely as any I have seem since. The simple, subtle message was unmistakable.

  4. “There’s a bear in the woods”

  5. Favorite ad was Jeanne’s village people ad which shows the whole world what she is really about. I love it because it destroyed whatever political chances she ever had to advance.

  6. Not my favorite but the most impactful was the “Daisy” ad

  7. The Daisy ad ran once. And LBJ was gonna win no matter what.

    Let’s try to do better.

  8. Michael Dukakis in the Tank

Comment by Stand Tall Friday, Mar 9, 18 @ 3:15 pm

  9. Martin Oberman’s ads against Neil Hartigan in the 1986 AG primary. Instead of looking for an honest man, Diogenes was looking for Hartigan to protect Illinois citizens from ComEd (”Neil?”). I’m not doing it justice.

  10. Dawn’s pool shot ad.

  11. Decatur won’t let Lamphier High School play in the city tournament. I don’t think that is fair. My name is Mike Curran and I am asking for your vote.

  12. I know it totally backfired, but Hynes ad w/ Harold ripping on Quinn was hilarious.

It’s very odd, but it seems as though this election cycle I’ve seen a lot more signs that don’t include the office for which the candidate is running. And some signs have the candidate’s first name only, which may work if you have an uncommon first name, but most don’t.

  16. The Netsch pool ad is the most memorable and probably still one of the best. A runner up vote goes to the Sheila Simon endorsement of Obama for Senate right after Paul died. Both of those ads shook up their respective races and changed the momentum for each candidate.

Sometimes a good ad just can just crystallize and capture the mood of the electorate and these two did that amazingly well pushing two underdogs to victory.

Joni Ernst talking about growing uo castrating hogs is also pretty good

  18. I accept that “Daisy” was probably an obvious, and maybe unfair, pick but will suggest my second pick.

The Reagan “Morning in America” some 20 years later was a simple vision that did resonate with the voters. Those in my family that voted Republican for the very first that year are still doing so.

  19. Mike Curran’s ad for State Rep v. Irv Smith where Mike scrolled all the bills that Irv had missed voting on. Best ad ever.

    Comment by d.p.gumby Friday, Mar 9, 18 @ 3:41 pm

  20. My favorite in a snarky way was Dan Schmitt who’s commercials ended with the slogan “Schmitt Happens”. I always wondered who convinced him that comparing himself to s#$/ was a good idea.

Comment by Bobi Friday, Mar 9, 18 @ 3:46 pm

  21. Bernie Sanders as in 2016 with Simon and Garfunkel music. He fell short but it resonated

Comment by Redraider Friday, Mar 9, 18 @ 3:49 pm

  22. “ America “ sorry for not finishing with the song

Comment by Redraider Friday, Mar 9, 18 @ 3:52 pm

  23. I’m liking the Dan Ackroyd ad you posted today. And, I like this one very much too. The Chris Kennedy one with his father’s image is really beautifully done too.

    Comment by A guy Friday, Mar 9, 18 @ 3:52 pm

  24. The Christine O’Donnell “I’m Not a Witch” ad comes to mind as my favorite bad ad. Saw it in class & died laughing. Obviously her chances of winning went up in smoke afterward. *snicker*

And then there’s Joni Ernst’s “Squeal” ad, which I think actually did a really good job of using humor that would specifically connect with her base. Wouldn’t have worked everywhere, but it was just right for this election.

  28. Daisy commercial Johnson Goldwater campaign. love that Dawn pool shot one too, but the Daisy commercial is so powerful and visually impactful.

Comment by Amalia Friday, Mar 9, 18 @ 4:03 pm

  29. The Jason Kander for Senate rifle ad in 2016 was also great.

Comment by Keyrock Friday, Mar 9, 18 @ 4:08 pm

  30. I liked the ads in 2002 by Bob Coleman, a Democrat who ran in the primary for Illinois AG. They were designed to portray him as a political outsider, so he ran ads showing himself completely failing at the typical political shtick (for example, attempting to cut a TV ad of him kissing babies who ended up peeing and throwing up on him, requiring multiple takes). I liked the self-deprecating humor.
