Drury gets million-dollar contribution

Posted in:

* This has been rumored all week…

AG candidate Scott Drury reports $1 million from Steven Miller, who has already contributed over $200k to Drury this cycle #twill https://t.co/UukveAozVn

Word is that Dury’s new TV ad ties fellow attorney general candidate Pat Quinn to Speaker Madigan. I’ll post it when I get it.

Weirdest year ever.

…Adding… This is an odd poll story because it’s so bereft of numbers, but at the very least it shows Drury believes he’s surging

DRURY INTERNAL POLL — Attorney General candidate Scott Drury released an internal poll Tuesday that showed big movement for Drury, and challengers Kwame Raoul and Pat Quinn in both directions. Drury’s support has jumped 5 percent, Raoul’s 9 percent. Quinn still leads the full slate of candidates although his support dropped about 20 percent. The poll was conducted by Deep Blue Strategies of Chicago. Thirty-three percent of respondents were undecided.

Jumped 5 percent or 5 points? Big difference. I’ll assume it means points. Also, he’s jumped 5 since when? And where’s he at now? 5? 10? I’ve asked the campaign for an explanation.

  1. Glad Drury started the race to blow the caps and is ending it with one million dollars since he “can’t be bought”

  2. You can thank Local 150 for seeing a million bucks more Drury ads.

  3. Cool. One week’s worth of advertising.

It’s getting really difficult to determine what is this biggest waste of money in Illinois politics… but this is likely going to take the cake.

  4. Undecideds clearly don’t like Quinn - who they know - or Raoul who has spent a ton. The other candidates who claim to be anti-machine, should clear a path for Drury who now has the money to win this.

  5. Gotta hand it to Drury. Madigan has come at him with everything he’s got and come up empty. Will be interesting to see if other good government donors follow Miller’s lead.

I think they knew this might be coming and tried to get ahead of it

  7. A million bucks can make you fly like an eagle. Thanks Steve Miller

  8. This race is far from over. So many undecided voters. Will this begin a wave of good government donors (think Independent Maps) rallying behind Drury?

Comment by WhoDunnit Wednesday, Mar 14, 18 @ 1:42 am

  9. I’m starting to think Drury can pull this off. The other candidates aren’t resonating. And try as Madigan did, he failed in his efforts to get Drury out of the race. The super PAC ads probably even helped Drury’s name recognition - as did the failed ballot challenge.

  10. Good for Sweeney and his 150 team seeing a potential problem and doing something about it when it only seemed like a big if. I wish more groups had 150s guts to get involved.

Comment by Labor Wednesday, Mar 14, 18 @ 4:38 am

  11. First, Drury is a hypocrite. He was elected state representative only because Speaker Madigan cleared the field for him.
Second, Drury has zero ground game. The unions will be out on force for Kwame. Madigan is highly motivated too.
Third, this contribution is too late in the game. 1 month ago, it would have possibly made a difference.

Comment by Drury Wednesday, Mar 14, 18 @ 7:05 am

  12. First, Madigan would never have cleared the field in order to bring a fed into his House.
Second, Drury obviously is not relying on the union boss vote. We have to assume the undecideds are voters who don’t care what those bosses say.
Third, Politico reported a big jump by Drury in the polls. Things have gotten very interesting.

Comment by Madigan Wednesday, Mar 14, 18 @ 7:41 am

  13. I woulda took $250K and been just as “upset” when Drury places out of the winner’s circle as much as the next guy…

  14. It’s all about low base rates.

Comment by State worker Wednesday, Mar 14, 18 @ 8:05 am

  15. Madigan would have a very long summer/fall if the AG matchup is Drury v Harold. I hope that happens for the sake of Illinois.

Comment by Flat Bed Ford Wednesday, Mar 14, 18 @ 8:14 am

  16. One million for Drury at this stage is some serious mad money.

I get the impression that many think the Illinois AG office has U.S. Attorney-like powers of investigation and prosecution.

Not even close, not even the same ballgame. You think GAs and governors past would have given an ambitious Illinois politician the power to come after them? That’s just silly.

Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Mar 14, 18 @ 8:51 am

  17. word - keep in mind several AG candidates have called for legislation to expand the powers of the AG (and one or more want to simply assert broader powers). No matter how realistic, perhaps the view may be that one of these changes will actually occur.

  20. what is the best poll on this race?

Comment by amalia Wednesday, Mar 14, 18 @ 9:07 am

  21. I read this as a concerted effort to stop Quinn from winning. We now have three sets of anti-Quinn ads. Two from marginal candidates.

Who is behind this and what do they fear?

Comment by Last Bull Moose Wednesday, Mar 14, 18 @ 9:18 am

  22. This is hilarious. If Drury gets to double digits I will be shocked.

  23. steven miller should be fired instead of rex tillerson

Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Mar 14, 18 @ 9:24 am

  24. Seems like if the plain numbers were all that good for Drury, they’d have released those instead of just movement. And by my math (assuming those are percentage points), Quinn had at least a 30-point lead in the previous poll?

  26. === The super PAC ads probably even helped Drury’s name recognition - as did the failed ballot challenge. ===

I agree. Although, I still don’t think Drury has a chance. This money could have been really helpful two months ago.

  27. Wonderin’ if Capt Fax will have a new Golden HorseShoe for most fruitless campaign spendin’
Uline or Miller or a tie?

  28. Drury is the Martin Shkreli of Illinois politics. Hey, at least he brings people together.

Politico reported on the same internal poll. Doesn’t add anything.
