* Former Gov. Pat Quinn was on Will Stephens’ WXAN radio program today and it was classic PQ.
Quinn started the interview, then all of a sudden there’s silence. And then he started talking to someone else. “Can I just come in to… Yeah.” Then he stuttered a bit, collected himself and carried on with the interview.
He hit just about every point in his age-old arsenal of references. Gold Star families, veterans (at least three times), jobs, the Citizens Utility Board, whistle-blowers, Abraham Lincoln, “Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and organize,” term limits, utility companies, “six days to the election but twelve if you don’t sleep” (twice) and how he’s a “fighter for the people.”
Asked who he supported for governor, Quinn said, “They’re all loving sons of loving mothers.”
I think the only Quinn cliche the former governor missed was the Mighty Mississippi River.

Not according to Chris Kennedy. According to Chris Kennedy, JB Pritzker’s mom was so awful, she instilled him with terrible values. What kind of a loving mother would do that?
We could ask Mrs. Pritzker if she weren’t dead, right Kennedy spokeswoman? Right.

Always treasure the Metro East presser in which Gov. Quinn announced the high speed train that would go from “Chicago to St. Louis AND FROM St. Louis to Chicago.”, as if a multi-directional train was a miracle of an idea coming from his administration.

Pat Quinn has given Illinois voters ample opportunity to size him up. He is a little bit of a political loner, a little bit goo-goo, a little bit crazy old uncle…I can’t say I am opposed to the themes he sloganizes. However, part of his political loner character seems to have made it difficult for him to form effective political coalitions. As Treasurer he did get the ball rolling ever so slowly on some odd hotel loan deals that the state had become yoked with. He had modicums of success with other initiatives and no luck with many others. The AG has a different focus from Governor (or Treasurer); in this race he has focused his rhetoric on utility rate increases, “corporate polluters,” and “unfair corporate practices.”
It’s hard to think of any scenic initiatives from the Lisa Madigan regime as AG. I suppose Quinn’s goo-goo streak might befit the office of AG more than being beholden to strong political forces.

That’s a real good short take. Plus, I’d venture that those slips of paper he keeps in his pocket and wad of business cards in a rubber band are not administrative best practices.
The Senate would have been in his wheelhouse. Pick and choose your issues, raise heck with the Republicans in DC.

I liked Quinn. He was better than his predecessor or his successor. He did talk reform, unlike our likely next Governor, JB. I early voted for him.
