* Gov. Rauner was on KMOX Radio today and was asked if it wouldn’t be more productive to try to build a better relationship with Speaker Madigan and maybe try to work with the guy. His response...
Well, you know what, Mark, here’s, here’s the issue. Do you, is it good to be buddies, would we be safer and better off if somebody had been buddies with Al Capone? Is the mafia, I mean, the corruption, the self-dealing is, is out of control in Illinois. And you don’t beat that by friendship. You don’t beat that by talkin’. You do it through political pressure and getting more leigslators elected who aren’t loyal to Mike Madigan, they’re loyal to their local districts.
* And then the governor retold the story (which he said Madigan would deny, “but you know what, it’s the truth”) about how Madigan told him once many years ago that he had no goals for making Illinois better, he was just in politics to manage power and make money…
And you know what? You don’t befriend that. You don’t talk with that. You beat that through hard work and electing reformers and that’s what we’re gonna do.
* But what about the bipartisan overrides of his budget and tax hike vetoes?…
Well, you know what, they broke down because of the pressure Mike Madigan. Mike Madigan wanted the three-year budget impasse, he wanted the pressure, he finally broke a few people. But, you know what, he’ll never break me. And we’ll get more strong-willed people in there and we’ll beat him. It’s just gonna take persistence.

Rauner has always been a Hyman Roth (This is the business we chose).
Madigan has always been “Michael” (I don’t feel I have to wipe everybody out, Tom. Just my enemies.)

History will not be kind to Mike Madigan. Rauner will quickly be forgotten but the legacy of influence peddling, profiteering and corruption will forever cement the Madigan name in Illinois.

I think Hinz’s theory is a bit unfair. If Pritzker, Berrios, or Lipinski lose, there will be a lot of reasons besides Madigan for any of them (Berrios especially).

I think Rauner’s characterization is pretty spot on here. It’s a losing fight, and I wish Rauner were better at it, but you don’t negotiate with hostage-takers, and Madigan has taken Illinois’s future hostage.

Maybe Rauner should run for the House, then run for Speaker if you want to take on Madigan.

Madigan is Michael, That’s been long established.
Rauner quoting Hyman Roth, and then mocking the “retiree - governor” and the Roth quote at the airport is the mocking of Rauner.
I know what I wrote… exactly… as I wrote it.

Who knows if he believes it. Likely just a universal excuse.
I’m of the opinion Rauner wants to be governor just for the ego-stroke. He’s obviously not very interested in the job.
When the superstars left and he had to try to stand on his own feet, it was quite revealing as to how ignorant he is of state government in general, and his own office in particular.

Madigan passed education reform, pension reform, MMJ, workers comp reform, revenue. I have no doubt that he’d vote for a progressive income tax if it had the votes.
Illinois became far worse off because of Bruce Rauner. Imagine the additional harm if Rauner was able to stop GOP budget/revenue defectors.
A bad Madigan is better than a good Bruce Rauner. If only Democrats would play that angle, somehow.

I think some of you are giving the Guv too much credit by comparing him to Hyman Roth (who was “a great man”).
To me, Rauner is more like Sollozzo, backed by 2 rival families (the Uhleins and Griffins) to take out the Don. He hit him with 5 shots and yet the Don survived.

One thing I’m sure escapes Rauner, who I consider loathsome, is that his regular references to “the Mafia” and now “Al Capone” are resented by people of Italian ancestry, who hear an “anti-Italian” dog whistle when he talks like this. Here’s a guy who probably considers Trump a bigot, but should look in the mirror.
