*** UPDATED x1 - Online *** New Rauner ad uses Biss and Kennedy against Pritzker

* That didn’t take long…

In Their Own Words: Rauner Campaign Releases New Ad of Kennedy and Biss Criticizing Pritzker

With the general election officially beginning, the Rauner campaign has released a new ad that makes it clear JB Pritzker is a self-dealing insider who will do the bidding of Mike Madigan — according to leading Illinois Democrats. The ad uses direct quotes from Chris Kennedy and Daniel Biss calling out JB Pritzker as an insider who is part of the corrupt system in this state.

Direct quotes featured in the ad:

Democrat Daniel Biss: JB Pritzker is Mike Madigan’s candidate. Everyone knows it. It’s clear. And if the Democratic Party wants to nominate Mike Madigan’s candidate, they should nominate JB Pritzker.

Democrat Chris Kennedy: I think JB Pritzker’s emerged as the posterchild for pay-to-play politics in this state.

Democrat Daniel Biss: It took JB Pritzker a week to get permission from Mike Madigan to even name him in talking about the sexual harassment coverup.

Democrat Chris Kennedy: Pritzker’s really there to protect the status quo.

Democrat Daniel Biss: JB Pritzker is Mike Madigan’s candidate.

* Watch it

I’ve asked if this is on TV or if it’s online only. I’ll let you know what they say.

*** UPDATE *** The Rauner campaign says this online only, but may go on TV in the days ahead.

  1. “I’m not in charge”
    Played on a loop, until November.

  2. The royal butt whooping JB put on those two takes a lot of air out of that ad, but I’m sure they had it in the can and needed to do something with it. Not super effective.

    Comment by Sonny Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 9:17 am

  3. I suspect Ives comments about Rauner will be far more effective.

    Comment by Macbeth Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 9:18 am

  4. Meh, Biss and Kennedy’s digs at Pritzker will be old news before the day is out. Nothing against them, that’s just the way it works.

    Think of all the nasty stuff that all those GOP candidates and office holders threw at Trump during the primaries. Then they (most of them) made nice.

    Can Rauner make nice with the Ives voters?

    Can he offer a positive reason to vote for him?

    Comment by wordslinger Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 9:19 am

  5. I just don’t understand how Bruce Rauner became so rich. He seems terrible at everything he tries.

    Comment by George Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 9:22 am

  6. These ads don’t really work. People don’t trust politicians, and they know their opponents will say anything to win a primary. And, well, if people liked Kennedy and Biss so much…

  8. Can he offer a positive reason to vote for him?

    Nope. Zero. Nada. Zilcho.

    Trump, at the time, had no political failures. Rauner has a proven track record as a free spending,progressive minded liberal.

  9. Rauner is at 30% approval, 20+ points under water.

    Who is Rauner’s constituency?

    No one has been able to explain that to me.

    Why?

  10. “I just don’t understand how Bruce Rauner became so rich. He seems terrible at everything he tries.”

    George - Bruce didn’t actually “do” anything. he didn’t run those businesses. He bought business and sold them in pieces, he is a destroyer. he never actually ran any companies or built anything, he is a dude who makes money off of other people’s work.

    Comment by huh Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 9:24 am

  11. If the Rauner Crew thinks votes can be mined from Kennedy or Biss supporters… heaven help Rauner.

    Not everyone is Diana Rauner.

    Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 9:26 am

  12. Rauner’s napalm airstrikes have begun. Record profits for TV stations ahead as Pritzker forces counter-attack.

    Comment by DuPage Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 9:28 am

  13. Is this supposed to be a buyer’s remorse ad? Granted, this is the only day you can run an ad like this one because of reasons Wordslinger cited.

    What I take away from Rauner’s Madigan fixation is that having a guy in office who is completely focused on taking Madigan out has not helped the state. Maybe having a guy in office that wants to try to work with Madigan will be good for the state.

    Comment by Montrose Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 9:30 am

  14. Go away Bruce. Save your money, feed/clothe the poor, sleep at night, resign. You are about to waste another 50 million.

    Comment by Rutro Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 9:31 am

  15. OW. He will try. By November he’ll make Pritzker look like Reagan.

    Comment by Blue dog dem Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 9:32 am

  16. Seems pretty simple for the Pritzker campaign to bash Rauner. He has been named the Worst Governor in the country, has no accomplishments to brag about in his 3 years in office, and has announced that he is not in charge of the state. He is such a weak candidate. No chance to recover from all his lying and ineffectiveness. He is Governor Divisiveness. Insults each and every legislator that he needs to work with by calling them part of a corrupt group in Springfield. How can he spin his failure any other way?

    Comment by Big Joe Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 9:34 am

  17. “…Record profits for TV stations ahead …”
    Bingo.
    Broadcast media is the #1 beneficiary of Citizens United and the #1 lobbyist working against a fix for it.

  20. =I just don’t understand how Bruce Rauner became so rich. He seems terrible at everything he tries.=

    You’re not alone in that thought.

    =George - Bruce didn’t actually “do” anything. he didn’t run those businesses. He bought business and sold them in pieces, he is a destroyer. he never actually ran any companies or built anything, he is a dude who makes money off of other people’s work.=

    He didn’t inherit anything. He still had to get to the point of being able to buy and break things up. And even doing that requires skill and knowledge and making deals. At some point he was good at something or multiple things.

  21. == I think JB Pritzker’s emerged as the posterchild for pay-to-play politics in this state. ==

    Easy to counter with Rauner’s

    * Pinstripe patronage

    * Back porch deal

    * Insider real estate leases

    * Failed public / private economic development staffed by pay to play partners

    And there is probably more if anyone takes the trouble to dig a bit more

    The past five years of the Rauner politics, Raunerism, and the governing within both.

  23. == Rauner has a proven track record as a free spending,progressive minded liberal. ==

    If that is what you want, might as well vote for a Democrat that can work WITH Madigan and get some things done.

    Comment by RNUG Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 10:01 am

  24. Meh. It’s not like JB doesn’t have at his disposal far worse things that Bruce’s primary competitor said about him. And now that the primary is over, Kennedy and Biss now openly support JB. The same cannot be said about Bruce and his primary competitor.

    Comment by Henry Francis Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 10:03 am

  25. Don’t see how this is remotely effective. He’s already got the “It’s all Madigan’s fault” people on his team. To the extent Democrats were/are against Madigan and voted for Biss/Kennedy, they still see Rauner as a significantly worse choice than the Speaker.

    If this is a play to re-unite the ILGOP, it fails there, too. That said, I’m not sure what he can do to fix that problem. His record is what it is at this point–he can’t un-ring the HB40 bell, and that’s what got him in trouble in the first place.

    Comment by Anon324 Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 10:17 am

  26. ===He’s already got the “It’s all Madigan’s fault” people on his team===

    Um, no. Lots of otherwise Madigan-hating Republicans voted for Ives yesterday.

  27. ===Lots of otherwise Madigan-hating Republicans voted for Ives yesterday===

    That’s the real challenge Rauner has within his GOP

    Telling them “to get in line”… “because Madigan”….

    These are ideologues, not all the time pragmatic, unless it’s payback to someone who crossed them, like Rauner.

  28. ==These are ideologues, not all the time pragmatic, unless it’s payback to someone who crossed them, like Rauner.==

    Yes. Especially if a somewhat-serious (Ives shows you don’t have to be *really* serious) pro-lifer runs as an Indy.

    What I’m saying is, Commissioner Gordon has turned on the Sam McCann Signal, and now we just have to see if he shows up.

    Comment by Arsenal Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 10:37 am

  29. ==Um, no. Lots of otherwise Madigan-hating Republicans voted for Ives yesterday.==

    True enough, but as I alluded to but didn’t state outright, those voters were primarily motivated by other things. If your raison d’etre as a voter is stopping Madigan, you’re probably already going to fall back in with Rauner. It’s the large portion of Ives supporters who have fundamental ideological differences with Rauner’s record that are his problem.

    Comment by Anon324 Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 10:55 am

  30. Hey JB, if I were you I’d define the election as being about Rauner’s failure’s and not let him define it all Madigan all the time. Just sayin. Time to be proactive instead of just reactive. Get’er done. Rauner is radioactive, so show the glow.

  34. =What I’m saying is, Commissioner Gordon has turned on the Sam McCann Signal, and now we just have to see if he shows up.=

    Do you think JB needs that? If he doesn’t you hand over that Senate seat to a non-labor friendly guy who will likely not be crossing over to vote with the other side. If he runs for his seat as an indie, you likely still have that ally in the Senate.

    Comment by m Wednesday, Mar 21, 18 @ 11:57 am

  35. If Illinois is anything like Virginia was last November, Democrats will swallow the nominee, warts and all, to defeat the GOP.
