Today’s quotable

Posted in:

* Tribune

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is scheduled to appear on a Monday panel in Chicago presented by Axios, a Virginia-based news site founded by former top names at Politico. […]

What’s a bit more unusual is who’s sponsoring the event. It’s Koch Industries, the business empire of Charles and David Koch, brothers best known for using their wealth to pour tens of millions of dollars into conservative causes and candidates, often kicking up controversy in the process. The Koch brothers long have drawn the ire of national Democrats for their outsize influence in conservative politics, with progressives often accusing the brothers of trying to buy elections. […]

Emanuel spokesman Adam Collins said the mayor is “looking forward to a thoughtful conversation with a nationally respected, nonpartisan news organization about topics that matter to our city.”

“I didn’t know and can’t help who sponsors the event, but if long-standing and widely differing views was a nonstarter, we wouldn’t have held similar events with the Chicago Tribune either,” he added.

Zing.

  1. Axios does decent stuff from what I’ve read. It’s news for people with attention deficit disorder but I don’t see marked bias.

  2. Adam Collins, winning; Tribune, losing.

  3. On the plus side, the Koch Boys aren’t known for regular temper tantrums and lighting their hair on fire, either.

  4. It works because the Brothers aren’t behaving like the stereotypes they’ve been painted as being.

    Love the “outsized influence” twist in the article. Just couldn’t be neutral, right?

  5. @Shytown

    Not sure how Adam Collins is winning when he gives the typical arrogant response that comes out of the Emanuel Camp. The only surprise is that he didn’t distract from the issue, which is how they operate 99% of the time.

    I have no idea what the Koch brothers are like as people and have never given it much thought. So I’m not sure what stereotype you have in mind. I doubt they act like cartoon villains. Heck, even Stalin was considered charming in social circles in his younger days.

    You know what is a nonstarter for me, is an infant on a ventilator because the “sponsers” can’t be bothered to cover their mountain of petcoke on the southeast side.
