Sanguinetti warns of GOP’s “extinction”

Posted in:

* Nick Vlahos

House Speaker-for-Life Mike Madigan was the object of much ire last week during the Peoria County Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day dinner. His long-term status as House and state Democratic Party leader — and as de facto leader of Illinois, in many ways — provided plenty of talking points.

The lieutenant governor, for one, sounded as if life as we know it from Mound City to East Dubuque would cease to exist if the Madigan-led Democrats ran the table in November.

“This is the election of a lifetime,” Evelyn Sanguinetti told the crowd at the Marriott Pere Marquette. “Right now, the extinction of our party is out there. And we have to fight.”

  1. The reason for the extinction is Trump — and folks like Trump (i.e., Rauner).

Strangely, a conservative resurgence has nothing — absolutely nothing — to do with Madigan.

Someone shoudl give Sanguinetti a mirror. And then give her some advice — something along the lines of: “Um, you might talk to Bruce a bit more …”

  2. ==Bobby T - “The reason for the extinction is Trump — and folks like Trump (i.e., Rauner).” ==

You hit the nail on the head.

  3. “Who killed the Illinois GOP?”

    “Who-who? Who-who??”

    - Ron the Owl

it takes some serious lack of self-awareness for anyone from Team Rauner to raise alarms about the demise of the GOP.

But if you are gonna do it, I suggest you send OW. He has exeperience.

  4. The Republican Party will never become extinct as long as Rauner is in charge /s

  5. That redistricting, tho…

  6. “Mr. Governor, you’ve been invited to speak at the Peoria County annual Lincoln Day dinner.”

“Now why would I want to talk to a bunch of Republicans. They almost beat me in March.
    Just send what’s her name”.

  7. How dramatic! I remember thinking about one year into the Rauner administration that the GOP members in the Legislature seemed happy now but they were making a deal with the devil when they accepted Rauner’s money and in return went along with his agenda. Some of them will pay the piper in November while the still wealthy Rauner will retire to Italy or where ever.

  8. I will build the museum if the Republicans go extinct. We will of course serve tea, you know tea party. We will re-construct the bones of a republican so people can see what they looked like. We’ll call it Republisaurus.

  9. =“Right now, the extinction of our party is out there. And we have to fight.”=

Evelyn, Bruce will be very cross with you if he sees that quote. The ILGOP is HIS not “our”. He bought it outright.

  10. She shouldn’t worry as much. Small animals may survive an extinction level event.

Comment by Demoralized Monday, Apr 30, 18 @ 4:40 pm

  11. GOP - You let strangers in your house in Illinois and in D.C. Good luck with that.

Comment by XDNR Monday, Apr 30, 18 @ 4:40 pm

  12. Quite the hyperbole. The GOP has seldom if ever been stronger, especially in that we have President Trump, who has done so many great things in such a short time period, more than any president in American history. Trump is the first true American president who puts Americans first.

Comment by Grandson of Man Monday, Apr 30, 18 @ 4:42 pm

  13. Raunerism destroyed the ILGOP.

Slip and Sue solicited a job from the Quinn Administration.

Slip and Sue was hired by Bruce. Ask her.

Once Raunerism is gone, what’s left of the ILGOP… let me know when and where.

Until then, Slip and Sue is wholly complicit in the destruction of the ILGOP. She magically was hired, but how things woulda been different had Quinn’s Crew hired her earlier.

We let strangers in our house, Diana and Bruce Rauner and with, up to now, $100 million they have spent to own the brand, it’s those like Slip and Sue that lack self-awareness that it ain’t the Dems, it’s the RaunerS destroying (or already destroyed) what’s left of the ILGOP

  14. Who killed the GOP? Rauner and IPI. His enablers are just as bad as he is.

Comment by Trumpianish Monday, Apr 30, 18 @ 4:44 pm

  15. The GOP will be dead in Illinois until the tax payers get the bill from JB in another year or 2.

After that the GOP will be alive and well.

  16. ==And we have to fight==

They ARE fighting…themselves. Just ask Jeanne and Sam.

  17. If that is their best argument for November then extinction is well deserved.

Comment by Dance Band on the Titanic Monday, Apr 30, 18 @ 4:52 pm

  18. I was a little sad a moderate Republican didn’t challenge Rauner in the primary, instead of Ives. If one was well-funded and decent, Rauner could have lost. But where would this person get campaign contributions and support? The ILGOP is a far right wing party, fiscally on one hand and socially on the other, with Rauner, Griffin and Uihlein owning it.

Comment by Grandson of Man Monday, Apr 30, 18 @ 4:56 pm

  19. Sometimes you have to destroy the village to save the people.

This Republican Party may be beyond saving. We need a party that believes in limited government performing essential services with competence. I don’t see that today.

  20. == Once Raunerism is gone, what’s left of the ILGOP… let me know when and where. ==
Dan Proft will continue to take pot shots at underfunded GOP candidates and win low hanging fruit races because he can’t win the high stakes ones even with Uline dough.

  21. We met the enemy and he is us.
Slip & Sue should change her name to Pogo.

  22. I wonder if Uihlein’s unmasking in the WP will affect his charitable giving in Illinois for awhile.

  23. –“Right now, the extinction of our party is out there. “–

Translation: If Rauner loses, you’ll never see another dime from him again, and you guys will have to raise your own money.

  26. As a life long Republican, I can truly say “I didn’t leave the party, the party left me.” Raunerism is way to extreme for me. He has no agenda, and has tossed the traditional values of the Republican Party.

Comment by Retired Educator Monday, Apr 30, 18 @ 5:59 pm

  27. I think the Lt. Gov. mistakes ILGOP with her own political career. The latter is the only thing that will go extinct if Rauner loses.

Comment by Three Dimensional Checkers Monday, Apr 30, 18 @ 6:05 pm

  28. Definitely true where IL GOP is concerned. And she and her boss Rruce are responsible for that extinction.

Very different story at the national level however. The GOP in Illinois is clueless.

    Comment by Chris P. Bacon Monday, Apr 30, 18 @ 6:34 pm

  29. Trump isn’t leading the GOP to its death… But Rauner sure has helped it go on life support in IL. I don’t blame Sanguinetti for being a good soldier. What else is she gonna do? The general election matchup is set and they are on the ballot….as huge underdogs. Neither Pritzker or Rauner have the answers to improve our state’s financial future. Read the Hinz article about a progressive tax proposal that would raise taxes on families above $300k. But what happens when a chunk of those 160,000 filers move to another state?

Comment by The Snowman Monday, Apr 30, 18 @ 7:16 pm

  30. Seriously, conservatives, what kind of personal hell is it to be so maniacally paranoid about everything?

Comment by efudd Monday, Apr 30, 18 @ 8:54 pm

  31. Sometimes things go extinct because they evolve themselves out of existence. I’m always going to vote for the best candidate regardless of party. I suggest she and others look on the mirror and ask themselves where they went off track.

  35. It’s delicious that Evelyn senses an extinction event.
I’d like to remind her that for
    Three years
    You made
    Public servants
    AFSCMEs feel the same
    But what I savor
    Most
    Is that my AFSCME hoplitoi
    Are going to roll
    Over you
    The Othismos
    Is upon you
    Take responsibility
    For what
    Your perfidy
    Has wrought
    Your people

  36. The Republican persecution complex is so severe they claim they’re about to go extinct when they control the entire federal government.
