After saying he’s “unifying” the GOP, Gov. Rauner says he’s not putting much thought into the task

Posted in:

* Last week

Speaking on WOC AM-1420 in Davenport, Iowa, Rauner declared himself a unifier — not just among Republicans, but also with independents and Democrats.

“You know primaries are tough. They’re part of the process. I respect the process and now we’re all coming together in the state. We’re unifying all Republicans,” said Rauner, who faces a third-party challenge from Downstate Republican state Sen. Sam McCann and a potential battle over re-electing his hand-picked state GOP chairman.

* This week

Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday tried to distance himself from a leadership battle within the Illinois Republican Party, the latest in an ongoing struggle between the governor and a vocal wing of conservatives who say they have been betrayed. […]

On Monday, Rauner tried to make light of the party leadership issue, saying: “I really don’t spend much time thinking about it.” […]

Rauner said Monday that he’s not paying attention to the infighting within the party, pointing out that “there have been fights and disagreements and challenges many times over the years. It’s part of the process.”

* Meanwhile…

We need a solid conservative to lead the IL GOP, not an inept insider completely controlled by Governor Rauner!https://t.co/7ovA2HnJYb

  1. Rauner needs to distance himself now, if it goes south. Can’t be seen losing a proxy war for who leads the Raunerite Party, or if the ILGOP decides “enough is enough”

    Phony leaders like Rauner know… once you lose leverage, no one will follow a feckless leader who needed money and leverage to be a “leader” to begin with…

    Rep. McSweeney… keep up the great work. We let a stranger in our house. Enough is enough.

  2. Why not McSweeney himself? He is a smart, informed, solid Conservative with integrity. He could right the ship. No bull.

  3. –After saying he’s “unifying” the GOP, Gov. Rauner says he’s not putting much thought into the task–

    Until last summer, I thought Rauner was competent in his fiscal recklessness and sabotage.

    His surprising lack of knowledge, or interest, in his job was revealed when he canned his Superstar enablers and brought in the IPI Dazed-and-Confused Crew.

    “Not Putting Much Thought into the Task” could be the title of the history book of his administration.

  4. ==Rauner needs to distance himself now, if it goes south.==

    Yes, but, OTOH, distancing himself now increases the odds that it will go south.

  5. What, exactly, does Rauner give much thought to?

    Comment by Arsenal Tuesday, May 8, 18 @ 10:28 am

  6. People like Ives and McSweeney are all sour grapes, railing about how “not conservative” Rauner is. It didn’t bother them a bit in 2014.

    Comment by cray Tuesday, May 8, 18 @ 10:28 am

  7. Rauner doesn’t “think about” or “pay attention” to a lot of things. Things that require a governor to think about and to pay attention to. Which is why he’s a failed governor.

    Comment by JoanP Tuesday, May 8, 18 @ 10:28 am

  8. In all fairness, it’s not like Rauner puts much thought into anything.

    Comment by Aldyth Tuesday, May 8, 18 @ 10:29 am

  9. “Not in charge” and “not thinking about” sounds like someone not committed to getting the job done. What’s next? “Asleep at the wheel”.

    The work is done behind the scenes. Can’t be seen doing “public” work and it going south.

    It’s about the image, can’t be seen publicly failing.

    I hear ya.

    Says the guy who just last week cashed checks from Dick Uihlein, Muneer Satter, Norm Bobins, Richard Colburn and Peter Huizenga…if those donors don’t make McSweeney, ever the walking contradiction himself, an insider controlled by big donors then I just give up

  15. “I really don’t spend much time thinking about it.” […]

    As demonstrated by this thread, the snark writes itself where the Gov’s concerned.

    Would it were otherwise, but you work with what you’ve got, and Illinois’s got BVR.

    Hmm. McSweeney is trying to get the stranger out.

    You’re yelling at the bouncer who let the guy in the bar… and is now throwing the guy out if the bar…

    Meh.

    Right now, they ain’t with Rauner.

    It’s in you not seeing what’s going on. I’d be more upset with Mr. Breen, but it’s too much fun mocking him.

  20. ===McSweeney doesn’t even attend Republican Caucus meetings.===

    Rauner bought the caucuses back in 2015.

    After buying the caucuses for the cheap price of $20 million, Rauner wanted no $&@#% problems.

    Comment by Emily Miller Tuesday, May 8, 18 @ 12:58 pm

  22. That Rauner purchased the party is indisputable. This sad dynamic doesn’t mean that “R” members would follow McSweeney across the street. They wouldn’t. Just sayin’.

  23. ===“R” members would follow McSweeney across the street.===

    They can’t follow their conscience?

    Mr. Breen “did”… but the money was too good come November?

  25. ===What money are you referring to? Did someone file a pledge? With you?===

    Since I have a question mark, I’m sure I’m waiting to see the Raunerbucks that Breen will need?

    Mr. Breen is a phony. Once a mailing, a cable buy, once that comes thru, then we’ll know exactly what is the price of the phony.

    I didn’t force Mr. Breen to write that Manefesto, lol

    Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, May 8, 18 @ 1:37 pm

  26. *Psst*… - A Guy -…

    (Whispering)… read Mr. Breen…

    ===As the lead advocate for the Republicans on the floor of the Illinois House, I have given Bruce Rauner every benefit of the doubt. I supported his vetoes on a number of bills that would have made it more difficult to do business in Illinois. Any elected Republican in this state would have vetoed those same bills. Hardly exceptional.

    The only unique feature left in Rauner’s favor is that he writes big campaign checks. For Republicans whose elections require those contributions, I understand their reluctance to be critical of Rauner. They may even still give him the benefit of the doubt, as I did until today.

    In the face of overwhelming evidence of Rauner’s inability to competently administer the Illinois government, inability to stand up to Mike Madigan effectively, and inability to keep his word and his commitments, I can no longer support him. And whether or not they are able to agree publicly, I know hundreds of elected Republicans, along with hundreds of thousands of Republican voters, who feel the same way I do.”===

    (Whispering)… after writing that, he’s back with Rauner.

    So, the question is…

    Mr. Breen’s righteous indignation was phony all along and we should ignore what he says from now on…

    Or…

    Mr. Breen is a phony now… because the righteous indignation isn’t going to help later(?)

    Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, May 8, 18 @ 1:42 pm

  27. Neither. Keep trying or pay attention closely. An answer from outside of your realm may enter your consciousness.

    It’s weird seeing him in all those joint appearances and all those press releases, isn’t it? Except for NONE of that is happening. He took a strong position. Likely helped his candidate over perform in the primary, but ultimately come up short. And then, as a leader, come back to support the party’s nominee. That used to be what our party required of our party folk. Today, it’s Oswego rules, i.e. we make them up Os We Go.

    Mr. Breen is an utter phony then… or crawling back to Rauner…

    ===The only unique feature left in Rauner’s favor is that he writes big campaign checks. For Republicans whose elections require those contributions, I understand their reluctance to be critical of Rauner.===

    … like “those” who…

    “For Republicans whose elections require those contribution”

    So, no, Mr. Breen and his righteous indignation was phony from jump street, or Mr. Breen is a phony now, because…?

    “Republicans whose elections require those contributions”

    lol

    ===what our party required===

    Rauner wants no $&@#% problems, that I know, lol

    Nah.

    A phony is a phony is a phony. Same as it ever was, righteous indignation notwithstanding.
