The Governor is staring at a blank wall, just as our future is a blank canvas. No matter how many millions are spent on the election or on these renovations, what’s written on that canvas is our choice and our responsibility. The Democrats and Republicans only have the power we give them over the coming years–no more, no less.

The mansion has been restored to its glory after decades of neglect after 3 1/2 years of drastic change and hard work
The state is not fixed, because for the past 3 1/2 years Democrats have resisted changing Illinois after decades of neglect to our business and competitive environment

When the Guv reaches out to fellow ultra-rich folks and asks. them to pay more to help the state, wonderful things happen.
When the Guv asks those closer to the bottom of the economic scale to pay more to help the state, non-wonderful things happen.

The governor in that mansion couldn’t govern the state or unite it, so he went around the government he failed to lead and did what he knew - deal with private wealthy people who also couldn’t govern.
“If we can unite on a plan to fix it”, is the worse thing for a leader to say. Those aren’t leading words, those aren’t words a governor should say. Rauner doesn’t know the job at all.

The people hired to do the renovation didn’t waste three and a half years blaming Madigan for their difficulties at work.
The people hired to do the renovation didn’t refuse to do their job until unrelated “Turnaround Agenda” items took effect.
The people hired to do the renovation didn’t change into multiple costumes. Every day, they dressed for their jobs and did the work.
Yeah, this renovation is a metaphor for Illinois.

But could be stretched to compare to imposin’ a progressive tax that the megarich willingly shell out. But we guess they will expect a big bash as their “reward”

The Governor surveys an empty shell few care about, congratulating himself on his success in leveraging wealth to create a facade of significance, weightiness, and authority that does nothing to ease the struggle of the average person.
It’s not a metaphor for Illinois, as much as it’s a metaphor for his entire political hobby.
If only he’d gotten into Lionel trains instead, he could’ve played out all his hot Taggart/Rearden fantasies without the collateral damage.

Even in the little city of Springfield - there are dozens more local improvements that deserve resources and attention (a big one: the State Armory).
Instead of turning attention to those in need, Bruce Rauner and his very rich friends helped themselves.

The metaphor for Illinois is that if you’re rich, you make out okay. For the rest of us, not so much.

I was kind of expecting there to be a historic renovation.
That looks like some relatively cheap flooring thrown over the existing flooring — which you know, is probably pretty nice hard wood given the date of construction and who built it — along with a thick coat of paint over wood that should have been stripped and then refinished with a stain or something that doesn’t scream “this looks like the inside of a McMansion, not the Governor’s Mansion.”

The renovation is a metaphor for Illinois. The wealthy will pay for what they feel is important–high local property taxes for their kids’ schools, a seat of power or a direct connection to a pal who bought one, luxury automobiles, 3-6 homes, and their pal’s pet project in Springfield.
They will not pay for the fundamentals of a functioning state–a progressive tax system, a transaction tax, a reliable public transit system, clean water and air.
