* I saw on Twitter that today’s episode of Jeopardy! served up a category called “Illinois at 200.” So I fast-forwarded through the first half so you don’t have to! (Spoiler: they were quite easy, so I was a little disappointed)…
$200 question:

Before he was elected president (and the war, of course), Lincoln worked as a lawyer for the Illinois Central Railroad, headed by George McClellan.
They had a different, rather bumpier history in the years following.

Which, when it was built, was the longest continuous rail line in the world. Cairo to Galena, with a “branch line” to the upstart city, Chicago. Today most of the original line between Centralia and Freeport is gone, with the “branch line” being the part that survived and became most successful.
