Here’s a transcript that includes the remark…
We want to build things in America, we want people hiring in America, and we want everyone buying American. Build, buy American. And we want to build and buy Illinois products. Illinois, good made, homegrown products That’s what Chelar is, that’s what you guys do, and that’s what I’m fighting for every day. I’m very proud of what’s been going on in the Federal government, Congress, and the White House. They’re making sure that we get a strong economy, that we’re bringing manufacturing back to America, we’re getting fair trade deals, we’re getting the tax burden down, the regulatory burden down on businesses - that’s one of the reasons we got a strong economy going around the nation. I want to do the same thing in Illinois.
So on and so forth. If you are watching the video, the line in question begins at about the six-minute mark.
In one portion of the ad, Trump is shown after a protest led by white supremacists turned deadly last summer in Charlottesville, Va., when he said that there were “very fine people on both sides.” That is followed by a clip of Duke saying, “We are going to fulfill the promises of Donald Trump.”
At the time, Rauner did initially stumble by telling reporters that he could not say that the death of protester Heather Heyer, who was struck by a car driven by a white supremacist supporter, was an act of “domestic terrorism.”
But Rauner’s office later issued a statement saying the governor “absolutely” believed the death to be domestic terrorism. And he went further at the Illinois State Fair, issuing a rare rebuke of Trump.
*** 10:48 a.m. *** From Will Allison at the Rauner campaign…
“Unlike Pritzker, who is Mike Madigan’s lapdog, Governor Rauner will always stand up for what he believes is best for Illinois. The governor supports the president and Republicans in Congress on the need to fix our broken health care system and for lower taxes, but he won’t hesitate to speak out when he thinks the president is wrong.”
*** 2:22 p.m. *** Pritzker is now hitting the Rauner campaign for it’s statement earlier today…
The Trump administration’s current effort to “fix” the healthcare system entails stripping protections for pre-existing conditions, a move that would force tens of thousands of Illinoisans to pay astronomically higher insurance premiums or go without care altogether. Since Rauner has not only hesitated to speak out on this, but has been entirely silent, it’s only reasonable to conclude that Rauner fully supports Trump’s attacks on people with pre-existing conditions.
“Donald Trump is trying to take away protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and the Rauner campaign is now offering the president their full support,” said Pritzker campaign communications director Galia Slayen. “This failed governor is cheering Trump on from the sidelines as he puts tens of thousands of Illinoisans at risk and continues his onslaught of attacks on the working families of this state.”
Meanwhile…
Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner said his campaign has “a whole bunch” of ads coming like one that featured governors of neighboring states mockingly thanking Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan for “raising Illinois taxes” and “helping create new jobs” in their states.

Rauner is an unlikable incumbent. Rauner also praises Trump, just days ago. I dunno if thinking other governors thanking Mike Madigan makes Rauner more likable.
It’s like someone with four flat tires worried about changing the oil on the engine. The Rauner Crew must make Rauner more likable and walk the fine line of Trump.
They ain’t doin’ it.

The problem with that line of thinking is that all of our neighboring states (except Indiana), have higher maximum state income tax rates than Illinois’ new 4.95% rate.
Iowa: 8.98
Wisconsin: 7.95
Kentucky: 6
Missouri: 6
Even in Indiana, after one takes in their county tax (around 2%) that is payable on one’s state income tax form, they are right up there with Illinois or above.

This is red meat for the base. I’m not sure they need red meat. Probably mildly irritates the right wing, but hard to imagine it’s impacting the U’s in the middle who are the key here.
The middle doesn’t really care for either of the D (CNN, MSNBC) or R (FOX) networks. There are some in that middle who probably do think the Feds are doing a good job right now. Sure there’s some who don’t. Better staying with the local Illinois local network coverage on these types of ads. (Wherever Channel 8 is?)
It’s a base ad. Maybe they need it. I wouldn’t think so. But it’s expensive to re-purchase the folks already in your basket.

Trump is 22 points under water in Illinois.
This isn’t a base thing, it’s reminding those disapproving of Trump that Rauner is with Trump.
Right now, with Trump 22 points under water in the state, this isn’t a nod to a base, it’s a bullhorn to Illinois, a state and her voters already not enamored with Trump.

Only in Illinois, California, New York would Trump be 22 points under water. That says a heck of lot about the people than it does about Trump and his performance. It is why middle age and older people are leaving Illinois and will continue to leave.

For what’s worth I’m considering leaving the state. It’s not Trump and it’s not taxes. It’s the damn weather! Always too cold or too hot or too rainy. Sick of shoveling snow and it will give me a heart attack one day, shoveling snow in single degree weather. My doctor warned me. I hate the politics of the South but “no snow” is gaining on all else.

To the update, so Rauner supports eliminating the SALT deduction? Good to know. I guess that’s why he didn’t lobby Peter Roskam to save it on behalf of Illinois tax payers, who are going to pay more in federal taxes because of this stupid law.
And Will Allison doesn’t know the name of the President either I see. Hint, it begins with a T and ends in rump.

Madigan is a state rep. He has nothing directly to do with local tax rates, so blaming him for the overall tax burden is a red herring.
Rauner refused to accept the Senate’s two year property tax freeze proposal last year. That’s on him. He could have taken small victories but didn’t. He wreaked massive damage upon the state, for nothing.

No. Voters are saying “Hey. Trump’s performance? We don’t approve.” That’s how that works. You not liking that result is a You problem, or what you want, that Trump is a victim of polling… in a state Trump lost by 17 points.

Again, no. No one is beffuddled. Trump is under water by 22 points.

No. Polling is around the way the performance is taken by voters, specifically in Illinois, and those polled don’t approve. They recognize they don’t like it. You recognize you don’t like that result, so blame those polled.

Pritzker is clubbing Rauner with the “Trump stick”
Rauner is clubbing JB with the “Madigan stick”
One of those sticks is more lethal in Illinois right now.
We’ll see how this plays. Some, *some*, people may be warming up to Trump a little more as time goes on.
No one is warming up to Madigan. Quite the opposite.
I’d be playing for the middle. This ad isn’t doing that. The production is a bit better, but they’re still madly in love with trying to say way too much in way too short a period of time. And this one isn’t short by ad standards.

Let me help you here. “Who knew” was an effective, well produced, well targeted ad. I wouldn’t describe my feeling as “loving” it.
What I could love, is an Ad series based on “Who Knew?”. That’s a powerful concept with a lot of tentacles if you want to define someone a lot of folks don’t know, but what they’ve heard isn’t too hot.

I agree. And I’m squarely in the middle. I supported Rauner last time around because I saw him as a better alternative to Quinn. After 4 years and “I’m not in charge” there’s no compelling reason to vote for him again Madigan or otherwise.
As has been pointed out he has no constituency. Republican support is clearly soft as the primary revealed, Dems clearly won’t be crossing over, and there’s no compelling reason for independents to vote for Rauner no matter how much he says “Madigan”. Because even if elected he’s made it clear that the next 4 years won’t be any different than the last.

I say this is more or less a given. But it’s not nearly enough to get him over the top without independents and a few angry Dems crossing over. The problem is that the anger felt towards Quinn that Rauner relied on 4 years ago is now being directed towards him.

I’d think that as part of the campaign, Pritzker and/or allies should remind voters that Rauner lied about abortion and betrayed people, as well as caving to Madigan on the tax hike and budgets.
Rauner’s trying to dampen enthusiasm for Pritzker, to distract from a lousy job. Pritzker and Stratton seem to be at some unity-building event every day. Build unity while waging a “counter” campaign, to remind conservatives and others of Rauner’s lying and capitulation.

That’s tricky ’cause JB’s base voters *like* HB40. JB *likes* HB40. Focusing on the lie is an OK way to square the circle, but voters don’t do nuance.
Perfect world for JB is McCann makes the ballot and hammers Rauner on HB40.

Since Rauner wouldn’t hesitate to speak out if he thought Trump was wrong, logic dictates that we recognize that Rauner’s silence is a sign of his approval of Trump’s policies.

Currently on Fox News- the Democratic Senate President of NJ just said NJ has structural deficits that no amount of money can fix. He also said raising taxes doesn’t work- what NJ needs is spending reform. It’s sad no Democrat in Illinois where are problems are similar to NJ doesn’t have Steve Sweeny’s Outlook. Ill Nous cannot tax it’s way to solvency and calling tax increases investments in the future is just BS. The NJ senate president also said if they raise taxes all that happens is rich people who can leave will do so. Where is our Steve Sweeney?

When asylum seekers show up at a U.S. border crossing, and seek to go through the entry process legally, is it wrong to rip their children from them?
JB Sessions says the policy is to discourage those who seek to enter the country legally from trying.

I wonder what Diana Rauner thinks about this. Isn’t her life’s work about protecting young children from damaging trauma? Heck it’s even in the name of her organization. A public plea from a Republican first lady would be more influential than a dozen from Durbin. Where is it?
