Rauner calls on White House to end child separations at U.S. Southern border

Posted in:

By Hannah Meisel

(Note from Hannah: I changed the title of this post because upon further reflection, Rauner did not commit to not sending any troops if asked, just that he was “not giving that any thought whatsoever.”)

* After a long day of taking arrows from critics calling on Gov. Rauner to rescind his April offer to send Illinois National Guard troops to the Southern U.S. border in light of the child separation policy, the governor this afternoon told reporters he is not thinking about it.

Reporter: “What kind of thought are you giving right now to the idea of sending Illinois National Guard troops to the Texas border?”

Rauner: “I’m not giving that any thought whatsoever. What I am calling on is for us to end the policy of separating families. It is bad policy, it’s wrong, it’s heartbreaking, it’s not the moral thing to do. We need to secure our borders and stop illegal immigration but separating families is not the right answer. I’m strongly against that and I’ve made my views clear to Federal Government.”

Reporter: “What are you doing to that effect? Have you spoken at all to the Trump administration?”

Rauner: “We’ve been in communication with the White House, we’ve been in communication with members of Congress.”

* Earlier in the day and yesterday, the governor’s office had been less direct answering the question, saying only that the governor did not support the policy, but not going as far as committing to not send National Guard troops.

Two Republican governors in Blue states, Gov. Charlie Barker of Massachuetts and Gov. Larry Hogan of Maryland, announced within the last day that they would pull resources out and not send more National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.

  1. ===I’m strongly against that and I’ve made my views clear to Federal Government.===

Lol, is that what he calls President Trump?

  2. He is virtue signaling. He is applying one policy to criminal illegal immigrants and another policy to Americans who are arrested and charged with a crime with children. These children are separated from the adults. It does not seem he is going to order the Illinois State Police to stop separating children from those they arrest and taken into custody.

  3. The Governor is not giving it any thought? That’s not the same as saying he won’t comply with a federal request.

    Comment by Mike K Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 4:38 pm

  4. Still won’t say “Trump”, LOL

Wait till Rauner gets in a bad tweet for doing the right thing here.

It will open a Pandora Box of Trump and Rauner… maybe losing more of what’s left of his Raunerites?

Glad he’s not sending troops, but this might be the end of the “he who must not be named”

    I don’t believe him.

  6. ==but not going as far as committing to not send National Guard troops.==

Which he didn’t do here, either.

  7. ““We’ve been in communication with the White House, we’ve been in communication with members of Congress.”

    I don’t believe him.”

I believe that at some point, the Rauner administration has been in touch with both of those groups at some point. I don’t believe they have talked to them on this issue. If they had, then the answer is simply “Yes.”

  8. ===“We’ve been in communication with the White House, we’ve been in communication with members of Congress.”===

    * Speaker Madigan on an Election Nite
    * President Cullerton on an Election Nite
    * Jeanne Ives… on an Election Nite.

If it’s not an election nite, Rauner probably did talk to someone.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 4:44 pm

  9. ===criminal illegal immigrants===

Who exactly are you talking about? The majority of the people detained at the border haven’t been tried yet, much less convicted, of anything.

Another mental midget with a keyboard and an opinion trying to justify the inhuman and un-American treatment of poor people by the federal government. This sort of blind loyalty is exactly how fascism takes hold. I can’t go to the border, but I’m going to call it out here each and every time I see it. Not on my watch. Not ever again.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 4:44 pm

  10. Dragged kicking and screaming to do the right thing.

Maybe we can set up reservations for the illegal immigrants. It worked so well for the Indians.

Comment by Last Bull Moose Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 4:47 pm

  11. Muscular - Don’t quite know what you mean by “virtue signaling.” Are you suggesting that if ISP is involved in a homicide investigation and at the time a suspect is arrested they happen to have a child with them the child should be held as well?

Comment by West Side the Best Side Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 4:47 pm

  12. Well, there goes the small percentage of southern Illinois votes he was holding onto.

Comment by Anon Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 4:50 pm

  13. ===Rauner did not commit to not sending any troops if asked===

    Rauner needs Trumpkins.

Rauner has no constituency. Can’t afford to do something? The right thing?

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 4:50 pm

  14. Did anyone ask if Rauner is reconsidering his earlier position not to allow Syrian refugees to be relocated in Illinois?

If not, why not? It’d would be a shame if Illinoisans forgot that Rauner was proud to stand with Trump against refugees before, and now only buckled under enormous pressure.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 4:50 pm

  15. “Well, there goes the small percentage of southern Illinois votes he was holding onto.”

Conservatives can’t count on Rauner to hang tough. What a contrast he is to Trump, who means what he says and stands by it. How are we going to MAGA with such surrender?

Comment by Grandson of Man Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 4:56 pm

  16. “criminal illegal immigrants”

The phrase keeps getting longer, lol. What’s the difference between an “illegal alien”, an “undocumented immigrant”, an “illegal immigrant”, and this new “criminal illegal immigrant”?

Comment by Liandro Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 4:56 pm

  17. “We’ve been in communication with the White House, we’ve been in communication with members of Congress.”

Basically saying Trump won’t talk to him.

  18. Can’t wait to hear Trump’s nickname for Rauner.

Comment by Arthur Andersen Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 5:01 pm

  19. Unbelievable that, in the face of one of the worst episodes of recent American history, Rauner doing the right thing is met with skepticism and hostility. You’re not a solution to tribalism if you can’t see past your tribe.

Comment by Chris Widger Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 5:02 pm

  20. ===Rauner doing the right thing===

    What did he do…

    Words. Actions.

He didn’t say he wouldn’t be sending troops.

What did he do that I missed in my takes?

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 5:06 pm

  21. ==Rauner doing the right thing is met with skepticism and hostility.==

Skepticism, yes, due to past untruths; hostility, no, unless you believe any disagreement constitutes hostility. His statements are inconclusive, not insightful.

Comment by Wensicia Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 5:09 pm

  22. The position Rauner took is the position that the majority of Illinois voters would agree with.
Rauner said that it’s not moral. Taking this state through 2 plus years of budget impasse so that he could get non budget items passed that he wanted was not moral either but that didn’t stop him. That’s why I question his sincerity here.

Comment by The Dude Abides Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 5:18 pm

  23. Trump will probably tweet

“Worst Republican Governor in America wants to protect illegals. The failed Governor in Illinois has done nothing for Illinois or Chicago.”

Comment by Real Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 5:26 pm

  24. “Rauner doing the right thing is met”

-Rauner loves gullible voters that are easily fooled by politricks. What Rauner is doing now is playing politics in an election year. Nothing more. Rauner loves voters like you.

  25. –“We’ve been in communication with the White House, we’ve been in communication with members of Congress.”

    I don’t believe him.–

Neither do I. Rauner says it all the time. But he lies all the time, too.

He’s seen the polling. Taking kids is off-the-charts unpopular among everyone but self-described Republicans.

And there ain’t enough self-described Republicans to get elected governor in Illinois.

  26. Hannah, please change the title in the URL as well. You’re right, he didn’t make any commitments either way in his comments. I want to share this but won’t until the link doesn’t misconstrue what he actually said. Thanks.

  27. If the figures reported are accurate, 4/5ths of the immigrant children arrived at the border without either parent.

  28. Rauner needs to go further- volunteer to resettle up to half a million right here in Illinois to make up for our population loss

  29. “Rauner doing the right thing is met with skepticism and hostility. You’re not a solution to tribalism if you can’t see past your tribe.”

Yet you incessantly defend Rauner or attack his detractors.

Rauner would not have done this if the pressure didn’t build—just like Charlottesville. Rauner is one the most soulless, calculating politicians I’ve ever seen. He threw people under the bus many times. Will he stick his neck out for anything?

Comment by Grandson of Man Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 6:44 pm

  30. ==Yet you incessantly defend Rauner or attack his detractors.==

I don’t think that’s fair; I regularly note issues I have with his stances and note my belief that he will not win this upcoming election. Neither party has an answer for Illinois’s woes because this state doesn’t want answers. Rauner will be long gone, but we won’t be, and that’s where my concerns lie. If we don’t applaud the good and lash out against the bad, instead simply lining up to take potshots at those across the aisle, we deserve everything bad coming to us.

Comment by Chris Widger Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 8:22 pm

  31. To Rauner and the BTIA- Blowin’ smoke in the direction of DC is not communication. If there were real communiques to the White House or members of Congress, then be a leader and share them with the People of Illinois (who you claim to represent) , or are you not in charge of those missives either?

  32. I’ve followed this blog for the last two years. I’ve enjoyed it. At times, I’ve seen comments that were laughably bias but understandable as I’ve noted that many here are invested personally and financially while aligning to the left. However, I’ve read the comments from regulars surrounding this issue of illegal immigration and separation of children, and realize that the majority here have no understanding of the law, policies in previous administrations or the current, and most of you really do not care about the impact of illegal immigration as it pertains to the United States; you simply know how to line up. Credibility is lost here so this will be my signing off to this blog. It’s disturbing that so many work for our great state.

  33. @Unbelievable

-Yeah, take your ball and go home. The only people with right to talk ia the NATIVE American Indians. This land was stolen from them so for you to be a descendant of a land thief or a immigrant to stolen land yourself you have no right to talk about illegal immigration.

Comment by Real Tuesday, Jun 19, 18 @ 11:49 pm

  34. Unbelievable, child separation is by Trump’s order, not because of “the law.” Credibility is lost here when you say that. Bye.

  36. Those that try to compare what is going on at the border is similar to those arrested of a crime are missing the point that when a citizen is arrested with a child our government doesn’t round them up and put them all in a concentration camp

What you are seeing happen is policies that are developed by law enforcement and military mentality that are in DHS
It is a mentality that looks at human life as an asset or a resource to control

The push back shows America is more than military and law enforcement

Comment by Anon Wednesday, Jun 20, 18 @ 8:05 am

  37. Let’s be clear here. Rauner still has not said he will not send Illinois’ National Guard to the border.

As for, “I’ve made my views clear to Federal Government,” that could be any member of the “Federal Government.”
Darin LaHood is a member of the Federal Government, and he’s still reading from Trump’s script.

Comment by Annonin' Wednesday, Jun 20, 18 @ 8:24 am

  39. BTW GovJunk really does not give any thought to anything he does so this “position” on National Guard deployment follows GovJunk SOP

Your own human compassion is… snark?

    Hmm.

Comment by Oswego Willy Wednesday, Jun 20, 18 @ 9:00 am

  42. It isnt simply the separation it’s displacement and kidnapping. A horrible policy made more horrific. How does the government reconnect a child to a parent that has been deported? There is no unification in many of the cases parents are now in jail awaiting a trial that may take months what happens to those children. Foster care, right that works so well, adoption of the babies is kidnapping, what homelessness? As to those who continue to say but when a parent is in jail their children are taken away, ready? I believe they stay with one of the parents or family member. Don’t pretend to justify a wrong with half truths.
