Ives still snapping at Rauner

* Greg Hinz asks around about how the Janus decision helps Gov. Rauner’s reelection campaign…

The decision in the Janus case “gave him a good press pop. It helps him with the conservative base,” which is still outraged that Rauner signed a bill beginning Medicaid funding of abortion, says one top GOP official, who asked not to be named. “But in the end in this year, it won’t make a difference.”

“Maybe it’ll help him get up every morning and realize he’s made a difference,” quipped a top party activist. “It’s still very much up hill.” […]

“I’m surprised he’s as well-positioned as he is,” said [consultant Thom Serafin], noting a recent poll that shows Pritzker leading by less than 10 points. After the big win over organized labor, “He’s got more to talk about” with the GOP’s conservative base, added Serafin. “He’s still got quite a bridge to cross.” […]

Asked if Rauner’s Supreme Court victory is enough to bring her aboard and get her endorsement, [Rep. Jeanne Ives] had a clear answer: “No. I’m not going to endorse the governor. I’m going to let him buy back his voters.”

Chris Mooney, professor of political science at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said unions have been strongly against Rauner since he made it clear at his inaugural address in 2015 that he was taking on the power of public-sector unions.

“Even if they won this Janus case,” Mooney said, “they would have still been there to fight Rauner tooth and nail. It’s a death match between them.”

But to some conservatives who may not be enchanted with Rauner, Mooney said, “With this, maybe it looks like Rauner [is] not completely ineffectual. Maybe he can get something done.”

Rauner still is looking to unify a socially conservative Republican Party base that split in the March primary over his signature on laws expanding abortion, immigration and transgender rights. His campaign already is touting media coverage of the ruling to help try to heal the rift.

But the court decision on its own may not help unify the party. Third-party governor candidate Sam McCann, a Republican state senator from central Illinois, is a supporter of organized labor who espouses socially conservative views. McCann attacked Rauner over the court ruling, and he symbolizes Downstate areas that are largely Republican but peppered with state institutions and the union members who work there. […]

Yepsen said that while Rauner and “a lot of people who do not like unions … are going to be gloating” about the court decision, “they need to be careful what they wish for.” He and others see the ruling as benefiting Pritzker and Democrats at the ballot box.

“I think it will have an energizing and radicalizing effect on the (union) members. This has been the history of the labor movement all along. You start messing around trying to threaten unions and break unions and what’s the effect of it? It’s a mobilizing effect,” he said. “I think it’s an organizing tool, it’s a mobilizing tool, not just with public-sector unions but with all of labor, which is threatened.”

Rauner is now content. Reelection is almost in “meh’ territory for him. This point could be tested by seeing how much of his own money he puts into it compared to first go around.

It seems with Representative Ives it all gets back to the West Point honor code: “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal or tolerate those who do.” She was and still appears to be angry about the alleged lies Governor Rauner and his campaign told about her during the primary run. It’s personal.

Do you have inside dope that backs your assertion?

He could have backed a Janus lawsuit as a private citizen and saved himself $100 million or so.

Why bother running for re-election if you’re indifferent to the outcome.

I’m not.

Aid and comfort. Rauner gave no quarter to Quinn. There wasn’t a moment of daylight breaking where Quinn wasn’t on the defensive, Quinn was continually on the defensive.

Rauner was in DC. He got his day in the sun.

I guess a photo op with Pritzker and labor leaders that afternoon and doing a fly-around with labor leaders forcing the false story that Rauner is pro-worker… guess that just never mattered… surrendering the field, and the day.

Rauner is terribly underwater everywhere, losing “everywhere”, less a 3-point lead downstate… but “only” up by 9 points?

For the love of Pete…

Rauner feels no pressure.

How do I know?

Rauner stayed in DC, extra days too, waiting for his close-up… not too worried about any pressure.

Not one person thinks a labor rally while the emotions run high… would be… good?

Nine points? I’m not surprised.

Now that Rauner can claim some sort of victory, he can get down to the real task at hand. Naming buildings at the fairgrounds. Raising funds to repair said buildings. Figuring out the main attraction at this year’s state fair. And lastly, a fitting legacy to his one term. Changing the state bird. Either a vulture or turkey.

Rauner, like Scottie in Wisconsin are NOT taking on Public Sector Unions. Only teachers. They are too chicken to take on Police and Firefighter Unions.

Janus is a paper pusher, how come Bruce didn’t use a Prison Guard for standing?

I’m not sure hiding out out-of-state for a few days letting the Grover Norquists of the world give him back-rubs is quite the sign of confidence that you think it is.

No, the point was… no pressure was out on Rauner by the Pritzker Crew.

Confidence or not, the point is and was… Rauner felt no need to be home in Illinois. No pressure. Stay as long as what was needed.

That’s the point.

I’m not counting out Bruce. Love him, Hate him, or indifferent, he’s a relentless campaigner. It’s most of what he does with his time. For a guy who is supposedly not a politician, he’s the consummate on message campaigner, right out of central casting.

Neither one of us, of course, knows what his motivations are. But yours doesn’t seem right to me.

You’re right. We don’t actually know, but think on this…

Quinn was forced mercilessly to push back on everything abd anything, never given any quarter, never allowed to breathe…

Rauner stayed, day after day, being home now… what pressute if any is he feeling like Quinn?

If anything, it’s Pritzker, even if it’s toilets, facing blowback.

It’s not like there was “pressure” to respond to anything governmentally or politically. Rauner got his day in the sun, without much taken to him.

Ives realizes that the end is likely near for Rauner and when the post mortem occurs there will be a battle for the soul of the Republican party. And when that battle plays out there will likely be a lot of second guessing on whether or not it was wise to support Rauner’s agenda. She seems to be setting herself up to distance herself from those that have.

I would like to see Pritzker do an ad in which he tells voters he unfailingly supports pro-choice, as opposed to Rauner, who used it as a budget hostage and betrayed people. Get a hit on both sides—remind social conservatives that Rauner lied to them and the pro-choice side that Rauner would have voted against HB 40 if the GOP continued his destructive budget crisis.

With all due respect to the Cap Fax/We Ask America poll - the results, Rauner down 9, can be misinterpreted. I believe that poll showed Pritzker with just 53% of the vote in Chicago. My sense is he’ll get 75% or more on Election Day, and Rauner loses by a dozen points or more.

Well, if Rauner gets 25% in Chicago he’s in pretty good shape, but in general, yes, the WAA poll has its limitations, especially given the “Someone Else” option.

That’s why a poll is a poll, a snapshot in time, and election results don’t have vote totals for “undecided”

It appears neither feel any pressure being put upon them to respond, however, Pritzker, leading by 9 points, still above water but still with work to do with Dems… should be far more active then we’ve seen.

Throughout the primary Pritzker withstood the attacks of Rauner and many thought it provided the opening needed for Biss and/or Kennedy. At the end of the day his victory was fairly resounding.

Having said that the dynamics of the general are quite different from the primary. Pritzker can’t afford to be complacent and we saw from the primary that when he’s caught flat-footed he often doesn’t respond well. Not only he should be putting Rauner on the defensive and allowing him to run ads unabated hurts Pritzker while simultaneously helping Rauner.

Funny, Jeanne Ives Talked a great deal about her principals and honor code by which she governs hersel.
During the primary campaign, both Mrs. Ives and Governor Rauner were both asked the salacious questions; “would they support each other if they were to lose”.
As expected both sheepishly stated full and complete support would be given to the victor but assured those asking, that they would win.
apparently, as we know by now, Mrs. Ives isn’t so honorable or principled, as her continuing petty actions clearly reveal.
