Today, Governor Rauner will hold an event to highlight the corrupt property tax system in Cook County and how Mike Madigan is blocking reform. Governor Rauner will be joined by a Des Plaines resident who will tell her story of how rising property taxes are hurting her community, while the governor will make clear that voting for Madigan’s handpicked candidate, JB Pritzker, will lead to more taxes and more corruption.

  2. It would be nice to hear more about Durkin’s proposal to sunset the horrible property tax statute, 35 ILCS 200 Property Tax Code.

    Durkin proposed it on the day SCOTUS changed the world. It didn’t get any attention.

    Rauner could win back some voters if he added this sunset/rewrite strategy to his platform, and actually worked to make it happen.

    You’d think that there could be bi-partisan agreement on this.

  3. Madigan is corrupt. Berios is corrupt (and going away) Pritzker is more of same and comes with his own toilets. I get all that
    Governor but what exactly are you going to do. Maybe fund all schools like the Illinois Constitution says? Use a progress income tax state wide to fund the schools and at same time requiring the school portion of real estate taxes to go to state and off local tax rolls

  5. So a retiree on a pension, whose pension is not state taxed,is complaining about state spending. She’s complaining about property taxes/which don’t have one thing to do with state spending.
    I realize that it’s all about sound bites- but I roll my eyes at this. I feel she deserves her pension and I’m ok with her tax fee part of it. I just wish people should educate themselves about state va local. There are only two way ms to reduce property taxes. Reduce services or have the state jay got the services.
    Then the consumer will either pay a private company for the same services or pay more to the state in taxes. Well, not the retired teacher. She will only pay if a private company takes over the services.

  12. As - Dupage- said, where is Rauner’s proposal to raise State level taxes to 100% fund K-12 and community college schools so the Local school property taxes can be eliminated? That would immediately reduce property taxes by around 70% or so.

  14. So mandate $40,000 for teachers and transfer school pensions to local school district and then cut property taxes. How does that balance? My current prop tax is 8.9%. Of that 4.7% goes to local school and 2.5% goes to the city. That leaves 1.7% for everything else (Roads, sewer, snow, county). Local school superindendent said taking over pension would likely add 1%. Yeah, that’ll be a cut.

  15. Everyone should watch the press conference footage. It serves as a prime example of how little Chicago reporters care about state government and politics…they move to the Rahm angle as soon as possible.

    And it would be nice if someone else in the Chicago press corps other than Amanda Vinicky could ask an informed and somewhat challenging question.

  16. We are thinkin’ BTIA should have been able to find a prop that wasn’t a government pensioner and former school teacher. Koch Brothers Play Book says public workers and their pension are evil because private employers have screwed their workers and they don’t get pension.
    Did any wonder what the retire would say if they told her GovJunk wanted local taxpayers to pay full pension costs. Yikes who is behind the wheel of the GovJunk Clown Car

  19. As someone who respected Rauners business success- I have to ask why someone with his business acumen is flushing at least 100 million on a re-election bid. The Governor has no chance this November even without factoring in the third party conservative foisted on us by Madigan and his laborer allies. Unfortunately we are back to one party rule by folks whose only plan is raising taxes and spending more money😂😂

Well he is right, the Cook system is corrupt and Madigan is blocking reform bec he owns a property tax law firm, but Rauner hasnt really done anything to make a deal. and property taxes are worse in DuPage and Lake counties. Part of the issue is your tax is based on land and building sq ft and other variables, but really not if has been rehabbed. So 2 buildings could have same tax and be worth 300k difference in value since one was rehabbed and one was not

    You don’t negotiate with corruption, you destroy it. Rauner couldn’t do it, and so Illinois doesn’t have a path forward. We don’t usually blame firefighters when a fire kills someone, but that’s Illinois for you.

  23. I believe this retiree said that rising property taxes were hurting her community. She wasn’t whining about her own personal checkbook. And as for teachers, perhaps we should just provide public housing for them in huts and state provided meals and let them serve our children?

  25. No, not at all. I believe they are underpaid and deserve their pensions. Being used by Rauner as a prop is my problem. How about realizing she is being used by him? DesPlaines is a hurting community? Ummmm, gonna say no to that.

  26. and by the way, anonymous, if she is paying property taxes it does come out of her personal checkbook, just like mine. You do realize that the biggest chunk of property taxes goes to the school district. Des Plaines is in a very good school district, thus it is probably higher

  29. honeybadger, yep, I really love my F150 (except the rust). Looking at the grille, it looks like hers may be a late 1990s truck. Brand new, it would have been about $15,000. Your other points are spot on btw. Did BVR choose a blue costume to indicate sadness on her behalf?

    Rauner and his supporters have no room to call anyone corrupt. Rauner is a hypocrite who in his own words got rich for decades off of public employee pensions, off of those “corrupt insiders.” He gave $300,000 in campaign cash for a Democrat after getting PA pension business.

    What’s the upshot of Rauner’s war? Doubling the deficit, tripling the bill backlog, decimating social services, slashing higher ed, stiffing providers, weak job growth, increased exodus from Illinois, GOP revolt, a tax hike with no reforms, toxic political environment, no contract or taxpayer savings from state employees, etc. Pretty GD stupid.

    Illinois state-level politicains over the last decade and a half have done a wonderful job of passing costs to schools. Blago jacked up the senior home owners exemption which cost the state nothing and I am sure earned him a few votes. Rauner’s behavior made it necessary to seek more local funding.

    That is why property taxes are so high.

  37. Some have argued that a property tax freeze would have done more harm than good. But Democrats offered it, just not to Rauner’s and the GOP’s liking.

    When nothing is good enough, we might just wind up with…nothing.

  39. She says her property taxes have gone up 50% since the 90’s. In 20 years, her 3% annual pension increase would have caused her pension to go up by 80%.
