Live radio ain’t easy

Posted in:

* Sometimes, people screw up when they’re being interviewed live. I’ve done it. It’s not as easy as it looks. However, conflating the ongoing trade war with the NATO contribution disagreement is pretty odd

Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti was interviewed on Bloomington radio Thursday and was asked about fears of a growing agricultural trade war under tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump and counter-tariffs from other nations.

But her answer left some people scratching their heads.

“Well, yeah, yeah. I do believe that at the end of the day, if people are paying less to be part of an organized agreement between nations, they should pay their fair share,” Sanguinetti said on WJBC-AM 1230. […]

Sanguinetti’s response about paying a “fair share” and an “organized agreement between nations” echoes Trump’s recent appearance before NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a military-based defense alliance with little to do with trade. […]

When asked if she was “OK” with the president’s trade policy, Sanguinetti said: “Well, I do believe that he needs to look out for us as far as trade is concerned and everybody paying their fair share.”

  1. Huh, here Mark Janus thought the Rauner / Trump folks did not believe in “fair share” agreements.

  8. Clearly confusing two different issues:

Trade - Trump has called for a level playing field in trade. He’s even suggested removing all trade barriers. Of course, no other country has jumped on that idea. Why? Because US exporters pay higher rates than firms importing to the US in almost every instance. Trump is trying to level the economic playing field for american companies and workers.

NATO - Paying the fair share in NATO expenses is absolutely reasonable. Trump has asked for NATO members to each pay 2% of GDP toward defense activities. Of course, Germany and the others are happy for the US to do the heavy lifting, and they can plow those resources back into their own country. Like a real free trade agreement that Trump is wanting he’s looking to reduce the US’s defense spending in the region, by having other nations step up on equitable basis.

Notice that the NATO request is for “fair share” in that everyone pays 2% of GDP. It’s not a “progressive rate”. It’s a flat rate, just like our current Illinois Income tax system.

    You’re being too generous.

Anyone who has watched her testify in front of a legislative committee is not surprised by this. She’s a well meaning and likable person, but Rauner picked her out of complete obscurity and put her in a position she was not prepared for and she has remained a Not Ready For Primetime Player — to keep 47th Ward’s SNL reference going.

That’s on Rauner, not her. He has never received the criticism he deserves for picking a running mate who clearly would be way out of her depth should she have to step in as governor.

Meh, she could have turned him down.

  13. Slip and Sue wanted and needed a job.

She asked a friend about a job with the Quinn Administration, and it was Bruce that hired her, and she took the job.

Both Rauner and Slip and Sue are to blame for her incompetence.

Radio is tough, I get it. This is beyond a tough radio thingy.

Slip and Sue was never prepared to lead the 6th largest state in America.

It’s a shame the radio personality didn’t ask her to further explore this notion of fair share.

  20. Downstate, the bases we use in Europe are provided by Europe and they pay US to be there. https://www.brookings.edu/blog/order-from-chaos/2018/07/11/what-trump-gets-wrong-on-allied-burden-sharing/

  21. Downstate, no worries. Trump told you yesterday that all the NATO countries agreed to raise their spending.

All it took was Trump to show up and and — boom — it happened.

Just like the North Koreans agreed to get rid of their nukes. Trump spent a couple of days in Singapore, and once again, it happened immediately.
