* So, um, what would be a good “time and place” for a protest, governor?

Protesters interrupted Governor Bruce Rauner at the mansion’s grand opening. They were protesting against Rauner’s changes to the Child Care Assistance Program. Rauner says he respects freedom of speech, but there’s a time and a place. @wics_abc20 @foxillinois pic.twitter.com/bIJKmnVWdp

… when I won’t made to feel uncomfortable or be embarrassed?

    Right? Exactly right.

    Time: anytime
    place: anyplace*.

  5. There are many ways and times you can protest, you don’t have to interrupt other people’s events. Heck, you could go to this thing and chant and scream before and after all the speeches and everything, pass out pamphlets, wave signs, whatever, you don’t have to interrupt his speech itself. Making a nuisance of yourself to get attention may be the whole point of protesting, but again, you can do it without being too big of an a**.

  10. –* So, um, what would be a good “time and place” for a protest, governor?–

When he’s not around and no one’s lookin’?

Let’s get our priorities straight: There’s a time and place to advocate for child care for the working poor, and then there’s a time and place to bow and scrape when the Rauners do their “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” taping.

Know your time and place, proles.

  12. Last time I checked, the “freedom of speech” thing didn’t have time and place and hours of operation disclaimers.

Always my favorite take on protests. “You could protest in a basement, or in an empty parking lot!”

  15. @Macbeth, that’s a bit of a red herring. Saying you can legally do something is not the same as saying you should actually do it.

  20. I guess it’s ok to drop off a toilet at someone’s house or private residence but you can’t peacefully protest outside a govt building. Is this the definition of a hypocrite?

  21. Saying you can legally do something is not the same as saying you should actually do it.

    Agreed.

But I’m not about to align my moral compass to Bruce Rauner (or Donald Trump).

So to their inidividual (or collective) moralities, I say: Meh.

Comment by Macbeth Monday, Jul 16, 18 @ 10:16 am

  22. I cannot wait. CANNOT. WAIT. Until November. Although I’m unhappy with the gubernatorial candidate options, Rauner sets the bar quite low for the next gov’ to be “better”.

  26. Yeah, they probably should take Kafka’s leopards-in-the-temple approach: “Leopards break into the temple and drink all the sacrificial vessels dry; it keeps happening; in the end, it can be calculated in advance and is incorporated into the ritual.”

  27. Millions upon millions so the guy can live it up in another mansion. All the while, the governor stood idly as our vets in Quincy died one by one due to his mismanagement. Sickening.

  30. ==I guess it’s ok to drop off a toilet at someone’s house or private residence but you can’t peacefully protest outside a govt building. Is this the definition of a hypocrite?==

To be fair, Rauner completely forgot about the toilet thing about 10 days ago.

  31. Rauner doesn’t get it.

Anywhere he is for the rest of his life is the appropriate time and place. He wrecked this state.

  32. I’d take Rauner over Pritzker any day of the week/month/year/decade/century…at least Rauner tries to fight against the “progressive machine”.

Comment by Illanoyed Monday, Jul 16, 18 @ 1:05 pm

  33. ===Why is it the first response by MOST republicans is to shutdown free speech?===

Because in the free marketplace of ideas, their ideas are generally unpopular. Which, you know, is really ironic considering their alleged devotion to free marketplaces, but whatever. Better for them to shut down dissenting voices.

Comment by Joe Bidenopolous Monday, Jul 16, 18 @ 1:42 pm

  34. ==at least Rauner tries to fight against the “progressive machine==

After signing HB40, sanctuary state bill, a gun control bill today and oh yeah wasting $12 Billion of taxpayer money that we didnt have, Rauner -is- the progressive machine. But by all means enlighten us more, oh wise one.

Which would be one more day than many of the children Rauner kicked out of the child care program get, so no thanks.
