After a number of proposed gun laws, some counties throughout the state are taking a stand.
33 Illinois counties now consider themselves gun sanctuaries. Although, the resolution is symbolic and does not change any laws.
Those counties are just trying to send a message to law makers that they believe in their second amendment rights.

Mark Walsh from the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, which supports gun-control legislation, said his group is reacting.
“While this is quote-unquote symbolic, it also sends a message to people that these groups think gun ownership is more important than protecting human life,” Walsh said.
Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard Pearson said those pushing for the sanctuary resolutions are sending a message to groups supporting gun control legislation.
“They only affect the law-abiding gun owner and they only affect the law abiding firearms dealer,” Pearson said. “They’re just trying to push gun control down the throats of Illinois citizens who don’t deserve it.”

Reporter: How concerned are you about the sanctuary counties who are trying to, or who have considered taking action to try to get around your gun laws?
Rauner: Well, I respect those who are passionate about defending the Second Amendment. I agree with them in supporting the Second Amendment. I will never sign a bill that violates the Second Amendment. What we’ve done is find, we’ve found compromise to increase public safety while also protecting the Second Amendment.
Effingham County was the first “sanctuary” county. If you look at the resolution passed by the county board, all the bills either died of their own weight or were vetoed by the governor.

it will be interesting to see how the perception of the NRA changes with the arrest of a Russian national who was working with the NRA at the highest levels, and who was in the Oval Office with Trump and Russian visitors.

Plenty of evidence that it’s Issues First, not Country First, so it should not make much difference to the NRA and its supporters.

Inconsequential: As national policy we already blew over the 2nd Amendent when we ignored the whole “well-regulated militia” qualifying clause. Any 2A debate since is founded on USC fake originalism.

Supreme County (Castle Rock v Gonzales, among other cases) has stated that individual liability of a police officer does not exist in their failure to protect you from criminal activity. In other words, you can’t hold them individually accountable for not enforcing a law that would protect you, even if doing so would remove you from harm.
Kate Steinle, the woman that was murdered by a foreign national (aka illegal immigrant in political speak) tried to sue San Fransisco and the Sheriff for not notifying ICE of the foreign nationals’ detention in a local jail. They lost the lawsuit. The same would hold true if a county Sheriff in Illinois knew about a gun violation in their county and didn’t notify the ATF (or other proper authority).
It’s sad because the overall effectiveness of law enforcement is greatly diminished when agencies don’t work together. Coordination between Federal, State, and Local law enforcement is highly effective at cracking down on organized crime. Not in 2018 though. Lefty jurisdictions don’t work with their higher ups on immigration, righty jurisdictions don’t work with their higher ups on gun regulations.

Yet another place (as with pensions) where constitutionalism is strangling actual democratic self rule.
There are difficult policy choices and legitimate differences to try and reconcile when you balance public safety versus people’s strongly ingrained desire to own firearms for personal protection. They would be hard to solve at the best of times.
But by all means let’s talk about 18th century muskets. That sounds like a really policy-relevant and research-informed way to help solve our present day disputes.

ZC…it is easy to solve problems when the law can be ignored, such as the clear provisions the 1970 Illinois constitution pensions. The somewhat archaicallywritten second amendment written 200 years ago is not so clear, leading to our problems in interpretation that have led to split decisions in the SC. Not the same situation at all. Roe might be a better comparison to the Second Amendment because we are arguing about the extent of freedoms or limitations.

Perhaps you should learn which groups made up of millions of law abiding Americans work to support and preserve our Constitution, and the Republic which is built around it versus the groups who fight to destroy both the Constitution and the Republic. You might start by learning if we are a Democracy or a Constitutional Republic, and the differences between the two.

The Big Brain trust that came up with the sanctuary county nonsense is composed of downstate gun guys like Richard Pearson, executive director-for-life of ISRA, a paid position, and “executive director” John Boch of GSL, also paid to blow hot air. These amateurs cannot match wits with the anti-gun groups, because they are both in the pocket of the police unions.
The “sanctuary counties” movement translates to small town white gun owners south of Kankakee who are dumb enough to think that the police are their friends, and to keep sending money to ISRA & NRA, who constantly sell them out and lose.

Most of us would just like the 2a treated like other rights, you know the 1st amendment as an example.
But the majority of stuff being proposed is not regulation, the semi-auto bans as an example

Last I checked not one major anti-gun law has signed into law in the last couple decades that Richard Pearson and the ISRA opposed. He must be doing something right you nitwit.

After Pearson at ISRA & former NRA lobbyist Todd Vandermyde fought tooth and nail to keep Duty to Inform IN Rep. Brandon Phelps concealed carry bill in 2013, it was Democratic black caucus Reps. LaShawn Ford, Chris Welch, and Will Davis who opposed DTI on the record to take Duty to Inform OUT of Phelps’ bill, because they recognized the threat to armed citizens from police, like Philando Castile in Minnesota.
Pearson recruited Otis McDonald in 2007 because they wanted a black plaintiff to front their lawsuit against the city of Chicago, then sold him out in Phelps carry bill. ISRA & NRA are racist orgs that constantly backstab their own members. Definitely send in your life membership before you turn on Hee Haw.
