Question of the day

Posted in:

* Rep. Steve Reick (R-Woodstock) writing on his campaign website

[Rep. Jeanne Ives] has said that she ran to hold Governor Rauner responsible for the policy decisions he’s made since 2015. Mission accomplished. But she’s also said that she won’t endorse the Governor for re-election. Her unwillingness to do so now will only make inevitable the very things she ran against in the primary. That’s not the type of legacy anyone should want to leave.

Every day that we move closer to the election, it’s becoming ever more obvious that this race is far from over, but in order to avoid the total meltdown of Illinois, we need to grow or at least maintain our numbers in the House and we need to retain the Governorship.

Jeanne, don’t leave your colleagues in the House facing that which you have within your power to help to avoid. Don’t leave the people of Illinois with a state government that will be hell-bent on leading us faster in our race to the bottom. If it’s your intention to carry on the fight beyond this election, do so by leaving something standing that’s worth fighting for.

You need to join the battle, and you can only do that by stepping onto the battlefield as it now exists. If you don’t, you run the risk of being remembered by the label that was pinned upon you during the campaign:

Madigan’s Favorite Republican.

Ouch.

* The Question: Should Rep. Jeanne Ives endorse Gov. Rauner for a second term? Take the poll and then explain your answer in comments, please.

  1. The world Jeanne Ives wants to pass–where Illinois has strong anti-woman and anti-minority social policies–has the highest chance of coming to fruition if Democrats continue to hold unchecked power until Illinois collapses and the vacuum is occupied by people with her interests. Therefore, she should throw all of her support behind Pritzker and Madigan.

Comment by Chris Widger Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:20 pm

  2. Hopefully Rep Reick pleading for help is funny to others as it was to us. Hard to believe Durkie has stooped to this one as a “strategist”. Maybe Durkie should call Ives himself.
BTW now that Janus has scored at huge raise by going to the IPI will Ives be lookin’ for somethin’ too?

Comment by Annonin' Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:21 pm

  3. That is spot and voted yes. However Jeanne Ives isnt for the Illinois GOP she is all about herself. She truly believes that if Rauner wins she will be the candidate in 2022 against JB. What’s even crazier is she thinks that she could win. She is unelectable in a state wide race period. That racist and homophobic commercial she ran showed her true colors. She is the female version of Alan Keys and Roy Moore.

    Comment by Long time R Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:22 pm

  4. If Ives had won and Rauner refused to endorse, you know she would have a fit.

    Comment by ste_with a v_en Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:23 pm

  5. No, because Rauner is completely ineffective. He fought and lost a long, brutal, pointless and destructive budget battle. What did he get for caving to Madigan on taxes with the quick vetoes/overrides, and signing a budget with the tax increase in it?

Then there’s the abortion betrayal, which caused a huge fallout, and sanctuary cities.

Comment by Grandson of Man Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:24 pm

  6. I voted no. If she wants to help her party, regardless of individual opinions on certain issues, then the answer is a clear yes, but I personally think the world would be a better place if people were generally honest, and it’s clear she does not think much of Rauner.

Comment by Perrid Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:24 pm

  7. No, does she really have any reason to? If she doesn’t endorse him and he loses, then she can say it’s because he wasn’t conservative enough. If she doesn’t and he wins then she is probably in the same spot she would be if she did endorse him, maybe lose out on Ken Duncan or Munger type of appointment but that doesn’t seem like her type of thing anyway.

Comment by ItsMillerTime Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:26 pm

  8. No, nobody should endorse Rauner for a second term. That was easy.

Comment by Excessively Rabid Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:29 pm

  9. If Jeanne thinks Rauner is the best candidate, she should endorse him. If she does not, she should not.

Who is anyone to tell anyone who to endorse?

I’ll admit that Excessively Rabid and I share the same sentiment as well.

Comment by AlfondoGonz Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:30 pm

  10. Love that #GOPUnity

Comment by Chicago Cynic Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:33 pm

  11. Ives may be an anti-women, homophobic bigot of the first degree, but she’s not hypocrite.

    Comment by Cheryl44 Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:34 pm

  12. No. Some actions and lies are unforgivable. Rauner crossed the line and the chips will fall where they fall.

Comment by Moderate Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:35 pm

  13. She can be the first republican to keep a promise. Do the right thing.

Comment by Red Rider Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:36 pm

  14. Great country song… you’ve got to stand for something or you will fall for anything…Jeanne should listen to Aaron Tippin and not endorse sinking Bruce.

Comment by CumberlandCoHick Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:37 pm

  15. Rauner went places an incumbent governor should not have gone or needed to go to beat her.

He ain’t losing because of or the lack of her endorsement.

I have rarely heard anyone really care about JB. This is another IL election of what pill can you talk yourself into swallowing. Rauner, or the Madigan puppet.

    almost gagged just typing it.

Comment by the Patriot Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:37 pm

  16. In the long run, integrity, principles, and consistency count for much more then whether you toed the party line in one election. Ives should keep being be Ives.

Comment by Anonymous Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:38 pm

  17. Ives would be screaming to the high heavens if she won and Rauner shunned her. The problem with Ives is she truly believes what Proft, McSweeney, Clevland, Peraica, Tilman , Segavich and all those other sharp right wingers told her about being the GOP leader.

Comment by Board Watcher Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:41 pm

  18. She did say she’s voting for him. I voted yes with the caveat that Rauner should ask for her support if he in fact wants it.

Comment by Put the fun in unfunded Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:45 pm

  19. The issue isn’t Rauner in the final analysis. It is how much control do you cede to the Democrats. If JB wins then there are no limits on what the Dems will do. If you hope to keep some limits on the Dems ability to further bankrupt this state and the average taxpayer then she refuses to endose Rauner.

Comment by NeverPoliticallyCorrect Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:46 pm

  20. Stay tough ives don’t let politics Change who u are

    Comment by J Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 1:48 pm

  21. Voted “No”. Just because someone is a member of the same party you shouldn’t have to support them.

For the GOP to take the position that Ives should or must endorse Rauner is incredibly hypocritical, maybe the most hypocritical thing I have heard from them in light of Rauner’s childish “People’s Pledge”.

The GOP is demanding party loyalty while condemning the same thing (democrats supporting Madigan) from the democrats is just too much mendacity for me.

Comment by JS Mill Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 2:07 pm

  22. Bruce Rauner repeatedly lied about Ives, spending millions of dollars to disparage her political record. If Rauner wants her support, he not only owes her an apology, but he owes the voters of Illinois an explanation.

Comment by Ian Howell Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 2:08 pm

  23. ===Madigan’s Favorite Republican.===

There might be a good argument that convinces Ives she’s better off helping the party than being spiteful, but I don’t think repeating Rauner’s biggest insult about her is the best way to persuade her.

    Also, Lol.

    Comment by 47th Ward Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 2:15 pm

  24. I voted “no endorsement”. Ives has principles. I disagree with her politically. But if Hillary Clinton treated Bernie Sanders as condescendingly as Rauner treated Ives, I’d have expected him to walk out of the convention. Ives can sense the bazillionare’s entitled thinking just the rest of us can. Heck, maybe if she’d ease up on her culture war a bit, some common ground could be found.

Comment by James Knell Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 2:33 pm

  25. == Stay tough ives don’t let politics Change who u are ==
She was on the Rauner payroll and surrounded herself with Rauner’s allies. Is that staying tough?

Comment by lovely Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 2:33 pm

  26. I voted ‘no.’ She has strong disagreements with Rauner on principle. Wouldn’t the GOP be better off using her stance (I won’t endorse him but I’ll vote for him) to reach out to her supporters?

Comment by Earnest Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 2:37 pm

  27. No, she shouldn’t. Reason - I really want him to lose.

Comment by Anon Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 2:38 pm

  28. She should. As quietly as she wants, but she should. She ran a high-spirited campaign and came up short. Of course they have differences, but they couldn’t possibly be greater than the differences she has with JB and his party. She should.

    Comment by A guy Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 2:39 pm

  29. No. Rauner is going to lose so why should Jeanne Ives endorse him? It’s not going to hurt her career. Nothing can help Rauner. Nothing. He’s running in a hard core Blue state . The only question is he going to lose by 8, 12, or more?

Comment by Steve Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 2:47 pm

  30. I voted no. Sometimes party loyalty asks too much. If I had been personally and falsely vilified the way she was, I’d do as she is doing, let him run his campaign, but without MY self respect being sold out. I felt the same way about Cruz vis a vis Trump. I was sad when he traded his self respect to please party loyalists. He should have stood his ground and I hope Ives does too.

Comment by Anonymous Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 2:56 pm

  31. - Steve- it would only hurt her career you say. She destroyed her own career with that bigoted sick disgusting commercial. Her career is in the rear view mirror

    Comment by Long time R Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 2:56 pm

  32. A real scientific poll we have here. I’m sure a lot of Democrats voted Yes. /s

Comment by Anonymous Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 3:00 pm

  33. I voted no. She does not support him, she has made that clear. She should stick to her guns.

    Comment by Flynn's Mom Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 3:14 pm

  34. I voted yes, although it will make little to no difference.

Rep. Ives’ campaign simply gave ultra-conservatives someplace to go in the primary. Some of those might go to Sen. McCann this fall, but Republicans need to realize they’ve blown their chances. Unless something truly disastrous befalls Mr. Pritzger, the Democrats are going to run the table this fall, and with it, reapportionment in 2021.

Comment by Commonsense in Illinois Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 3:25 pm

  35. - Long time R -

Ives might not go any higher in Illinois politics but she could run for the House of Representatives or get some sort of Washington D.C. job. But, what’s not far off is : Bruce Rauner is going to be a relic of the past after November. Rauner is in the wrong state. This doesn’t have anything to do with Ives or Rauner . Illinois is in true decline…

Comment by Steve Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 3:27 pm

  36. Ives should not endorse someone who she so clearly and emphatically believes to be dishonest.

Comment by slow down Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 3:30 pm

  37. Is she going to vote for JB? Ask her that question. If she says she isn’t, then that should be enough. And if she isn’t, when asked if she will vote for or support Rauner, she should simply respond: “All I will tell you is that I am not voting for JB.”

Comment by Nanker Phelge Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 3:46 pm

  38. You don’t endorse failure on this order of magnitude.

Run. Far away from Bruce Rauner as fast as you can, as far as you can, and find an underground shelter until mid-November.

As to those thinking she’d be upset if Rauner withheld his endorsement of her - that’s incredibly daft of them. You don’t want an endorsement from Typhoid Rauner.

Comment by VanillaMan Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 3:47 pm

  39. She’s already said she’s voting for him (even though I doubt if she does). That’s an endorsement. Why the silly word games?

Comment by just an fyi Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 4:12 pm

  40. Who cares - nobody cares what she thinks - except for her.

Comment by Anon Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 4:20 pm

  41. ===Who cares===

You take the time out of your day to come to this site, then you read this post and then leave a comment like that? Apparently, you care more than you think.

Comment by Rich Miller Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 4:22 pm

  42. I would ask this to Rep. Ives: Do you want to do everything you can to stop Pritzker from being elected, or do you want to play to his favor by not supporting Rauner? I’m not saying that McCann is in cahoots with the Dems but it doesn’t do the party any good by failing to stand with your candidate.

Comment by Ross Brown Monday, Jul 23, 18 @ 9:40 pm

  43. People I know won’t support Rauner because of the campaign he ran against Jeanne Ives. Sam McCann will get my vote.

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Jul 24, 18 @ 1:42 am

  44. ==I’m not saying that McCann is in cahoots with the Dems==

You don’t have to. 150 said it for you. In a way that leaves no doubt.
