Lt. Gov. to offer naloxone training, free Asian Carp tasting in her tent at the State Fair Tuesday
Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti, who chairs the Governor’s Opioid Overdose Prevention and Intervention Task Force, will join Sangamon County Health Department officials at a naloxone training demonstration. The health department will be training the public on the life-saving overdose reversal drug on Tuesday and Thursday in her tent.
Also on Tuesday, Lt. Governor Sanguinetti will showcase an Asian carp tasting, also known as silverfin, in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the University Housing, Dining Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Chefs will be highlighting the nutritional value of the fish and the variety of ways to prepare it. Portion dishes will include silverfin slider with kohlrabi slaw, smoked silverfin crostini, and sesame silverfin salad. These items focus on the sustainability of our food supply, affordable and high-quality foods, protection of Illinois Lakes and Rivers including the Great Lakes, supporting Illinois products and workers.

Sanguinetti is a being a total hypocrite with this asian carp stunt. She previously wrote a letter published by the Tribune saying that efforts by the Army Corps of Engineers to keep asian carp out of Lake Michigan were an unnecessary experiment and a waste of taxpayer money.

Is the health department going to hang around through the tasting? Because it might be a good idea to have some medical professionals nearby when the carp starts being served.

I believe the LG is techically chair of an Illinois Rivers Council, so it’s germane, but it may be nice to mention it in the release.

Slightly off topic: Years ago I took my kids to State Fair on a Saturday morning….pretty slow. We passed a booth hosting a bubble gum blowing contest, judged by then Lt. Gov Bob Kustra, watched by no more than 10 people. Of the many snarky, snide things that came to mind, the most impressive - and lasting - memory was the genuine enthusiasm/fun he showed going about his task.

I really hope the focus on the sustainable food supply does not include the Asian carp. We are supposed to be getting rid of them, not sustaining them.

These are good topics *someone* in state government should be caring about. But the Lite Guv’s publicity pushing the eating of the carp is kind of a smokescreen for her and the administration fighting on behalf of the barge tow lobby to limit what the State and the Army corps could have been doing to stop the carp with more vigor. Basically, the tow barge companies want money for dredging the rivers and canals so they can continue to have clear navigation… which helps their immediate bottom line. But they are dead set against spending money to fix up hundred-year-old locks and dams, and adding more carp barrier, because that might temporarily slow their money making. Even though the long-term health of a billion-dollar sport fisheries business and the entire Great Lakes aquatic ecosystem is under threat. That doesn’t compute as relating to “shareholder value”. They assume it’s a lost cause… and they’re working to make that prophecy self-fulfilling.

Actually blackened silverfin is delicious. A bit tedious to avoid bones, but if ya take your time,its worth the effort.

The sustainable food lobby is well aware of the danger Asian carp propose to native species. Their goal is to get people eating “Silverton”, because each carp in tacos or creamed on toast is one less carp reproducing and crowding out native species.
I know a young man who has a food company that uses invasive plants in it’s products. He says the only way to get the invaders under control is to get the general public eating them

When I was a kid, on Fridays in school they used to serve tuna boats (tuna and tartar sauce on a hoagie wrapped in foil and heated to second-degree burn levels).
After eating one of those gut-bombs and playing ball after, the sickness you experienced wouldn’t be helped by naxolone, but the janitor kept a heavy supply of that sawdust-concoction for mopping up what did make you feel better.
