Rauner says “left-leaning” Chicago press is “plenty biased”

Posted in:

* Gov. Bruce Rauner was on WFMB earlier this week and Sam Madonia asked him whether he liked to campaign. He said he loves campaigning. And then

MADONIA: How about dealing with the press?

RAUNER: [Laughs]

MADONIA: Is that all good, you want to play that again?

RAUNER: [Laughs] If the press wasn’t, you know if everyone was like you, Sam, playing down the middle –

MADONIA: Well, we try.

RAUNER: Play down the middle, that’d be fine. You know [laughs] one of my biggest frustrations is there’s a lot of left-leaning press, especially up around Chicago, and they’re plenty biased. And that’s been a frustration. But you know what? The press is all human beings. Every human being has their bias, whatever, and it’s all part of it, got to move past that.

  1. The laugh says it all. We know what follows the laugh. It’s his tell.

  2. But two of the three biggest newspapers in the state endorsed Rauner four years ago, the Tribune and the Daily Herald. So are they among the biased leftwing press in the Chicago area?

  4. Wait, he completed a full paragraph of words without saying “Madigan?”

  5. Yeah, those Bolshies on the edit board at the state’s biggest paper really have given him a beating all these years.

For crying out loud, they tried to sell the lie that Rauner had introduced balanced budgets his first three years. That’s just a bias against honesty.

  6. They are not biased. They are sensationalist and sloppy

  7. That Tribune and its State House Chick and Kass have been so biased against the Guv.

What is with these rich, privileged, white, entitled guys whining about all the unfairness against them all the time?

  8. Yep the Troncs and Dan Proft’s papers may just have some biases…

  9. And then he laughed and he laughed and he laughed. And then he packed for Italy.

  10. The same biased press from Chicago that released tapes to try to derail the Pritzker campaign?

Comment by Real Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 12:21 pm

  11. A red letter day for Rauner. He got to stoke resentment against Chicago, newspapers, and democrats in one response, and never said anything true at all.

Comment by Jibba Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 12:26 pm

  12. ==He said he loves campaigning.==
It beats the heck out of working.

At this point, any time Bruce laughs, a reporter should snort derisively and say “Here comes a whopper.”

  13. And then he laughed and he laughed and he laughed. And then he packed for Italy.

-He will flee to Italy because the wicked can’t stand to see how someone will make Illinois better after his 4 years of intentional ruin and destruction.

  14. Has he…has he ever read the Chicago Tribune?

Comment by Stark Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 12:28 pm

  15. ===But you know what?===

    No. What? What? Seriously, what?

    Ok, to the Post,

Forgetting all the endorsements Rauner got in 2014, “some” from papers that said they’d stop endorsing, (those pesky edit boards ignoring reporters for me) and that @StatehouseChick who’s tweets make me giggle and cringe and feel embarrassed for her, and Kass and the “Chicago Way” thinking that gave us Lisa Madigan as our governor in 2010 or 2014, or…

    … so forget all that…

As a white male, Bruce should be blaming Diana Rauner, Anne Kavanaugh, “Hud”, and IPI for the likes of Diana Rickert and the BTIA(tm) for the “left-leaning” others calls “reporting the ridiculousness that has been seen since the ‘Superstars’ left”.

I bet “ck” and company are sad and feel vindicated.

    Diana wanted better messaging.

    Blame the left-leaning media?

Diana’s a Democrat. She told me so.

  16. Everytime — every speech, every interview — Rauner goes, “But you know what?”

    Drink.

Comment by Macbeth Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 12:32 pm

  17. Wasn’t Rauner in the ownership group of the Sun-Times? The one that stopped endorsing until it endorsed him in 2014?

Comment by Publius Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 12:32 pm

  18. Rauner’s entire term has been one long troll.

Comment by VanillaMan Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 12:34 pm

  19. Trumpian Rauner must be angling for Italian ambassadorship.

Comment by Norseman Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 12:40 pm

  20. Down the middle is he?

My goodness anyone who follows his show knows Sam’s in so tight with local GOP.

  21. Clearly the BTIA and their predecessors have been playing a game of hide the Chicago Tribune from Rauner for the past three-plus years. Someone please get this man a Tronc editorial page pronto so he can feel loved again.

Comment by John Deere Green Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 12:43 pm

  22. So, the Sun Times and the Tribune endorsed him in 2014 over Pat Quinn. Then both endorsed him again over Ives. [Ducky Laughs] Obviously some lib’ral pantywaist outfits.

  24. Give me a break. As a former communications staffer for a big government agency, I have seethed with jealousy at the good coverage Rauner gets from the Chicago news media, specifically the television outlets. (Print journalists, outside of the Trib editorial board, have been more down the middle.)

Their favorable spinning for Rauner has waned a bit since last summer, but I happened to catch the live midday news coverage of the State Fair politicking each of the last two days and it provided a good example of the friendly treatment the governor receives. Wednesday, as expected, was focused on Rauner bashing Madigan. But yesterday the reporters mostly played up Madigan’s quick exit from the breakfast. JB was practically an afterthought.

  25. The laugh says enough, further words are not needed.

Chicago has been very rough on Rauner. It’s a wonder how he was able to live or do business there. Same with the rest of the professional Chicago bashers.

Comment by Grandson of Man Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 12:49 pm

  26. Don’t believe what you read or see, only what I tell you. Sounds about right.

If anything I think the press has been overly kind to Rauner by not holding him accountable or calling out his lies.

  27. Mike Madigan and the Tribune he controls.

  29. “there’s a lot of left-leaning press, especially up around Chicago”

I guess Diana renewed their subscription to In These Times.

  30. Rauner is also channeling his best “Trump” too… but Rauner complained about press bias before Trump did.

    It’s part of his schtick.

Comment by Oswego Willy Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 1:11 pm

  31. A couple of weeks ago Rich posted unedited video of a Rauner press conference in the Chicago area on property taxes. I was flabbergasted by the soft treatment he received from the reporters. With the exception of Amanda Vinicky, none of them asked him a remotely challenging question. And sure enough, they all gave him favorable coverage of the event.

Compared to the way the city hall press corps covers Rahm, Rauner is handled with kid gloves by the Chicago media.

Comment by Telly Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 1:32 pm

  32. “I guess Diana renewed their subscription to In These Times.” You sure it wasn’t High Times instead?

Comment by Skeptic Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 1:37 pm

  33. Macbeth, my lover could handle that one. If you changed it to “Madigan” though, call an ambulance.

Comment by Fixer Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 2:08 pm

  34. Liver.

Comment by Fixer Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 2:09 pm

  35. If your only source of news was the Springfield and Champaign TV stations you would think that Rauner has done a pretty decent job as Governor. Rauner has a lot of friendly media trying to help him in downstate Illinois.

Comment by The Dude Abides Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 2:15 pm

  36. “But you know what?”

No, Brucie, [laughs] but I’m sure you’re going to tell me.

  37. He’s still in a tizzy because Mary Ann Ahern had the nerve to ask a follow-up question.

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Aug 17, 18 @ 2:19 pm

  38. Is left wing press or just that Bruce is a poor communicator? Because before it was all about how he failed to communicate.
