*** UPDATED x1 - “They can’t kill each other fast enough on the south and southwest sides” *** Helene Miller Walsh gets Sauer seat

Posted in:

* I discussed this with subscribers today, so we’ll just stick with what’s already been posted. Tribune

Helene Miller Walsh, the wife of conservative radio host and former GOP U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh, has been picked to fill the state House vacancy of a former Republican lawmaker who stepped down after being accused of sending an ex-girlfriend’s nude photos to other men online.

Nick Sauer, of Lake Barrington, resigned from his Illinois House seat this month after the accusations surfaced in a Politico report. Local Republican officials on Saturday chose Walsh to replace Sauer both in the General Assembly and on the November ballot.

Now, Walsh faces the potentially difficult task of building a campaign in the short few months before the election. She will run against Mary Edly-Allen, a teacher from Libertyville, in the race to represent a central and southern Lake County district in the state legislature.

* Daily Herald

“I’m really angry about what’s going on in this state,” Miller Walsh said. “People are leaving and have already left. I’m tired of what’s going on.”

She also said that, as a legislator, she wants to help the black community. Miller Walsh is a five-year advisory board member at Project H.O.O.D., an inner city nonprofit organization started by Pastor Corey Brooks in 2012 to help people become peacemakers, problem solvers, leaders and entrepreneurs in their communities.

“We all want the same thing, ultimately,” said Miller Walsh, a lifelong Chicago-area resident. “We all want to be able to live our lives with a lot less government interference. And we are responsible for ourselves. We’re no different up here in Mundelein than they are on the South Side (of Chicago).” […]

“When people came to her, she said to me, ‘You know what, I’ve got a chance to do my part to fight for Illinois,’” [Joe Walsh] said. “I think she’ll make a great candidate because she’s the epitome of a citizen legislator. She ain’t a professional politician, that is for sure.”

  3. Walsh is a known anti-Semite and clearly has racial bias. This is an embarrassing pick for the Lake county GOP and I encourage my fellow republicans in that area to abstain from voting in that election. We can not progress forward with people like this dragging us down.

  6. ===We all want to be able to live our lives with a lot less government interference. And we are responsible for ourselves.===

Somebody help me out here, what government interference is she talking about here? How does the government interfere in the life of Helene Miller Walsh?

Part of the conservative playbook: invent a problem caused by “the government” and promise to solve it if elected. This is how people like her husband got the Tea Party folks all riled up about the deficit when the President was a Democrat and they are silent now when Republicans are in power and the deficit is far worse.

And gullible people will believe it.

  9. Democrats love to tear down strong Republican women. They do the same to Republican black men and women.

If you don’t fit their narrative, you’re a threat.

Her husband is a talk radio host, so some of the language is a bit overblown, but the sentiment of what she said about divided America is absolutely true.

  12. Don’t know a darned thing about her so i guess it is the choice of the Republican leaders. However, isn’t there a Republican up there with some kind of electoral experience, a mayor, county board guy (although looks like Republicans have problems on board level too) that wants to move on? I like experience. But on good side Joe must be current on any child support he owes her.

Comment by DuPage Saint Monday, Aug 20, 18 @ 10:56 am

  13. =Democrats love to tear down strong Republican women.=

I don’t consider myself a Democrat or a Republican so argument is lost on me. But if the statements attributed to Walsh are true I would not vote for her regardless of gender or party affiliation.

Comment by Pundent Monday, Aug 20, 18 @ 10:57 am

  14. Perspective?

Helene Miller Walsh makes Allen Skillcorn look like a reasonable moderate and thoughtful.

Skillicorn is worried about a “Red Dawn” invasion.

Comment by ZC Monday, Aug 20, 18 @ 11:13 am

  18. The social media footprint by Miller-Walsh is troubling that it’s not hyperbole playing to a constituency, it’s off-handed thoughts that are presented in language of someone not crafting dog whistles, but someone in their plain speak, being who they are.

    Whew.

Comment by PublicServant Monday, Aug 20, 18 @ 11:36 am

  29. @Word (and somehow Rich even tho it’s his post)

If you look at the post, most of the supposedly outrageous comments are her sharing things from her husband.

Also, she runs her husbands business and is deeply involved in his political operation and volunteer network (one of the reasons it will be so easy for her to pop up a campaign).

As for the charge that she’s against Muslims running for office or wants to jail journalists, prove it. Otherwise that’s just dishonest political spin from the press release of a political opponent. None of the shared images support those assertions.

As to the update…are you trying to spin that as racist? She works with Project HOOD. I’ve been to their events. They’re fighting violence in the South and Southwest sides, so of course that’s an area of concern for her.

Why the resistance to facts states forthrightly? Does she need to couch it in some sort of politically correct Orwellian speech to get the message to you?

Comment by Phil King Monday, Aug 20, 18 @ 11:37 am

Comment by Bruce (no not him) Monday, Aug 20, 18 @ 11:40 am

  35. Helene Walsh has been more heavily involved in and done more to support anti-violence efforts in the most crime ridden communities in Chicago than 99% of people in the suburbs. She’s put her action where her beliefs are and I applaud her for that. I think she’ll be a good addition to the House, particularly because she won’t be a “sheep” like most House members are.

Comment by Nolan Monday, Aug 20, 18 @ 11:40 am

  36. === she runs her husbands business and is deeply involved in his political operation and volunteer network===

So she is responsible for Joe Walsh’s proposal that we arm teachers and toddlers? And his threats of violence against political opponents?

Comment by Lake County Voter Monday, Aug 20, 18 @ 11:40 am

  37. ==supposedly outrageous==

  49. Given that this is the Sauer seat, you would think they would want to avoid controversy.

They either did not do their research (particularly questionable in light of Sauer) or thought she would be represent the district (even worse).

From Sauer to her really is a “Think we’ve got a bad candidate? Hold my beer” type appointment.

Nice misuse of “Orwellian”. I know you were reaching to sound alt-right smart, but that wasn’t it.

Comment by JS Mill Monday, Aug 20, 18 @ 1:15 pm

  51. TBH, I’m a little surprised her Roy Moore cheerleading (post-sexual misconduct allegations) isn’t playing more prominently in the blowback. In a seat that’s open due to sexual improprieties, I definitely see that coming in mailers.

  52. —-What does her husband have to do with her statements? Some people don’t think strong Republican women have minds of their own….

Absolutely, though I do want to know her position on Trump as if she does share her husband’s view, that’s going to create some intraparty friction. If she doesn’t, home must be interesting.

Oh heck, living with Joe Walsh is interesting anyway I’m sure.

Comment by Archpundit Monday, Aug 20, 18 @ 3:03 pm

  53. All that said, my sister has a business in Barrington–I don’t think she lives in that district though she is close, and she’d wouldn’t say things on Facebook like that (she’s a businesswoman). However, my brother-in-law who is a great guy, but a bit of a wingnut, has a Facebook feed that pretty much mirrors that.

  56. By the way, this isn’t an anomaly. You have Joe Walsh’s biggest cheerleader in western Lake Cty, Tom Weber, running in the 64th. He spent years on the Lake County Board trying to normalize himself, but now, with Helene, it’s okay to be the fringe again.

Comment by Springfieldish Monday, Aug 20, 18 @ 6:49 pm

  57. ==Poor Ed Sullivan==

Rep. Sullivan probably thought he was handing his safe seat to someone that could keep it for a bit. Then Rep. Sauer decided to have a double life. Now the Walsh family comes into the picture. So we go from a cap fax golden horseshoe winner that voted to abolish the death penalty and support gay marriage to Rep. Miller-Walsh in less than two years. My times have changed.

    Wow.

    That’s really some great perspective.

    I miss Rep. Sullivan.

We let a stranger in our house with Rauner, and Rauner invited guests willing to burn down the house.
