Pritzker responds to Rauner’s claims he will raise taxes, bring corruption and fewer jobs
Whew.
* Anyway, to the story…
Democratic gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker is hitting back at remarks made recently by Gov. Bruce Rauner on the campaign trail and through TV ads in which Rauner said Illinois will experience “higher taxes, more corruption and fewer jobs” if Pritzker is elected.
Speaking Monday at the Rock Island County Democrats’ annual “Salute to Labor” picnic, Pritzker said Rauner has been “an utter and complete failure, and now he’s lying. I put out a plan that will lower most people’s income taxes and lower property taxes, which is one of the biggest scourges we’ve got in the state. And it will help us pay for schools.”
Pritzker has not “put out a plan” on taxation. He hasn’t even put out an outline.
* Also, it’s never wise to count on your opponent to self-destruct. I don’t think that’s what he means here, but a whole lot of his supporters are putting a lot of faith in this happening…
“I believe in standing up for job creation and for workers,” Pritzker said. “I believe Bruce Rauner has been an utter disaster for working families across the state of Illinois. That’s why he’s going to lose in November.”

That’s what this is all about, being in office and being held accountable,” Mooney said. “In both (2014 and 2018), the incumbent has little to show for and the challenger is a neophyte candidate who had nothing except promises to offer,” he said. “You knew at the beginning of that 2014 race, as soon as Rauner won the nomination, it was going to be just terrible negative ads the whole time because both sides, that’s all they got. And at this point, this time around, it’s probably going to be very similar.”

Pritzker is very good at giving NON-ANSWERS. He won’t give a definitive answer……most people I talk to (independents, Dems, Republicans) think he is waiting for Madigan to give him the answer. I wouldn’t count out Rauner yet. I’m an independent, and voted for Quinn the first time, Rauner next time. A lot of people I talk to haven’t decided yet.

Nobody likes this answer, but Pritzker has to work with the GA to get the question on the ballot. And more importantly, until he and the GA determine how much revenue is needed to operate the government over the next several years, he can’t begin to say what the new rates should be. This ain’t a dictatorship.
He said he wants a graduated income tax. His plan is to put that question to the voters to change the state constitution. He has to work with the GA to get that done. It’s as simple as it is unsatisfying.
JB’s missing income tax rates are a lot like Rauner’s plan to roll back the current income tax hike. Except everybody knows that Pritzker will deliver, so he’s getting more heat about details that are only partially in his control.
That’s politics.

JB will push for an increase in the state income tax, while he is waiting to get a progressive income tax, which is years away, if ever. He has to. His new spending and no cuts to existing spending, will force him to raise taxes on everyone, as soon as possible. With the democrats in power, they can force it through, like they did under Quinn.

@47th Ward, you’re right that detail need to be and doubtless will change as it’s worked out, but JB needs to put his marker down. Heck, I don’t care if he puts a handful of options out there, with different revenue needs and different tax rates/plans, but he needs to put some kind of weight behind his promises.
Rauner needs to do the same with his much vaunted plan to roll back the tax hike.

I am surprised JB hasnt nudged some friendly think tank or advocacy group to put out a progressive tax w hypothetical rates that accomplish his goals. That would show it works, without having to take ownership. He should have had that in his binder months ago.

I don’t fault the Pritzker Crew pretending they have a policy plan. I don’t.
I fault them to be so brazenly disingenuous to facts that their plan… has no facts.
Here’s how this works;
When Rich Miller does your “work”… and then they won’t even acknowledge both the tax policy and the infrastructure policy…
… you better be capable enough to either refute, accept, or lay out plans to seek engaged to process.
This is a time where the campaign spending $207,000 a day… that’s every day… best be focused on GOTV and the field ops, and getting Dems and Indies that disapprove of Rauner…
… of… Rauner…
… to the polls and keep engaged Labor to those ends too.
As of this moment… Pritzker isn’t too thoughtful to policy or the policies of governing.
The debates will expose the empty rhetoric.
It didn’t hurt Rauner, as Pat Quinn failed.
Looking more and more that Pritzker seems the empty vessel, but Rauner is willing, unlike Quinn, to go after the empty seven ways to Sunday.
I’ll wait to the debates to see how the empty will resonate.

I see your point. Thank goodness the GA has been so accurate at predicting and acting on that fiscal stuff in the past. So we’re good.

Governing is easier if you run on an agenda. Then you can claim a mandate and push it through the GA. It gives Pritzker leverage.

Never happened. An incorrect UPI story made that claim, cornering Nixon so that he couldn’t deny it, even though he never said it. Democrats used that fake claim against him ever since.
Even today - even here. It’s incredible how it lives on.

I believe that a really rich liberal will talk about a progressive income tax with out ever having any intention of promulgating such a thing. People vote for what they want to hear not what the get.

Rauner did not give any specifics 4 years ago because he did not need to. I suspect JB has poll numbers that say he doesn’t either.
The problem is people may be more cynical this time around and the x factor is Madigan. If JB won’t give us his tax plan and he is Madigan’s guy any intelligent person not wanting to pay more taxes has to vote for Rauner.
Its just life in IL until Madigan goes.

Rauner is on TV right now bashing Pritzker for a mileage tax that he hasn’t even proposed. Yet you somehow want him to provide detail on the progressive income tax hike he wants and you go on to blame Madigan?

1) Rauner signed the 32% tax increase into his own budget. Not knowing that isn’t very bright… or Pritzker’s Crew needs to be better telling people so.
2) Madigan? With the Madigan drum beat… Rauner is *still* down 16 points. This is the closing 16 points since this has been going on for almost a year.
3) Rauner isn’t likable. Rauner is 26 points underwater.
Pritzker can poorly messsge policy because Rauner is 26 points under water and Pritzker is spending $207K… every day… and its is being spent where it needs to be spent… GOTV

Remember when Rauner first ran for governor, he never publicized a plan either. Come to think of it- -Rauner still has no plan outside of campaigning.
