Even though, as the challenger in 2014, Rauner blasted Quinn as “a miserable failure on jobs” and promised “I’ll get results,” his employment results have been worse than Quinn’s, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Specifically, Illinois added 209,000 jobs in the first 42 months of Rauner’s administration, according to the most recent finalized figures from the BLS. In a comparable period — the last 42 months of the Quinn administration — Illinois added 241,500 jobs, or 16 percent more.
There was some pushback on that particular comparison.

Rauner’s excuse to [WCIA’s Mark Maxwell]: “We have had the headwinds of a tax hike from (Democratic House Speaker) Mike Madigan.” […]
With the higher tax rates in effect during Quinn’s last 30 months, Illinois added 173,500 jobs. With the lower tax rates in effect during Rauner’s first 30 months, Illinois added 151,600 jobs. […]
This doesn’t show that Quinn’s policies were better for business or better for jobs than Rauner’s are. There are too many economic crosscurrents and outside forces at work to credit or blame any governor for these sorts of movements in the job market. It simply shows that, by Rauner’s own standards, he’s a bigger failure than his predecessor.

This is spot on. If Rauner were running against an incumbent with his own record, he would attack him relentlessly for failure.

Rauner set the standard when he made those comments about Quinn. He was not wrong, Quinn was not a good governor.
By Rauner’s own standards that he set, using his own words coming out of his mouth (we know this from video evidence) we know that he is a bigger failure than Quinn.

Democrats offered compromise on *nonbudget* reforms, but Rauner slammed and rejected them. Rauner knew what he was doing when he stuck nonbudget items in the budget. It proves he didn’t have Democratic GA members secretly supporting him. If they did he could have passed his reform policies as stand-alone items. Rauner’s budget crisis was a terrible ploy that hurt so many people; it was, “Pass my reform agenda or the place gets wrecked.” Terrible.

LP, I seem to recall Gov. Rauner killing off something called the Grand Bargain and undercutting one of his own Republican leaders.
If he’d helped get that passed, he’d be bragging about his accomplishments and saying if re-elected he could do more.
But the guy doesn’t know how to negotiate. He doesn’t know victory unless it comes in a fake phone call on election night.
He could be running right now to keep and extend a temporary property tax freeze, but instead thought nothing was better.
He’s his own worst enemy.
Four years in office have somehow turned the corporate moneyman Bruce Rauner into Pat Quinn in a bad plaid shirt.

Rauner has worse job numbers than PQ in just about every way you look at it. And PQ was able to do it without Rauner’s biggest advantages.
1. Rauner being the successful bidnessman was going to be able to recruit bidnesses like no one else. (Just look at all the bidnesses he brought over as a result of his trips to Japan and Europe).
2. Rauner had the added benefit of Intersect Illinois (completely detached from the State and all that bureaucratic inefficiency) laser focused on nothing but attractin’ bidnesses.
PQ didn’t have either of those going for him, and he still outperformed Rauner.

Not one of Rauner’s Agency Heads had ONE suggestion on cuts in their department. Rauner campaigned on taking arrows, he couldn’t even come up with one cut, even with all the waste he knew of in the government. What a waist of four years for republicans.

If given a 2nd term Rauner will keep spending in check? When given an opportunity to use his Amendatory Veto power to make cuts from the budget during his first term he blinked. He even said that he didn’t want to take the responsibility for the cuts. Rauner gave our state bigger deficits than any Governor we’ve ever had but now he and his supporters are arguing that he deserves a 2nd term. Hmmm..

I love the headline of this post. It’s the rank hypocrisy. It’s Rauner slamming Quinn but being worse than him. Quinn was more fiscally conservative than Rauner.
It’s Bruce Rauner waging a war against enemies he blames for wrecking the state but he caused more damage singlehandedly in four years than anyone.
It’s the waging of war against so-called corrupt insiders but profiting directly because of them for decades, through public worker pensions.
It’s the attack on public employee unions because their seat at the table was bought by the measly $4 or whatever amount per check each worker who chooses pays to a political action fund, but Rauner singlehandedly spends millions to buy and control the ILGOP.

Willy, fairy tales or fantasy land? Which do you prefer? If you don’t believe a state-wide referendum to change the constitution to increase taxes won’t pass, you’re the writer of the fairy tale (people in this state love to have others pay for their programs…see Quinn’s tax increase and $1.5B hole in the state budget when he lost and the tax sunsetted). You already live in a county with a tax rate over double the national average with around 74% of that money going to the school district, but your JB wants to, yes, wants to (OK, not will, but will if he can with the help of Madigan) increase your income taxes (he has to on the middle class, too to pay for all his promises) to increase funding for education, along with a new agency, universal health care, a “capital bill”, and just more social services. IL averages spending nearly $20K/student, Oswego is less, but less than 50% of the kids are ready for college or even ready to move to the next level. You can play word games as much as you would like, the bottom line is JB wants to increase taxes; he is running on that platform. This will destroy many small businesses who will be forced to lay-off an employee or two. This is too small a space to go into percentages of rising taxes on small margins/net incomes of small businesses. Just picture that favorite restaurant of yours in Oswego now forking over (get it, “fork”?) an extra 7%-10% of its revenue on top of the 2% from last year’s increase. It adds up, and it will have a ripple effect of employment levels, capital reinvestment, etc. NO, it actually is not fun, just reality not fantasy.

Yes, I know about 2020, its the year after 2019 when JB lays his hand on the Bible (to raise taxes). Condescending comments don’t shine well on you. In Illinois, most of those can’t take bankruptcy without requesting explicit permission from the State / General Assembly. Based on past precedent, the odds are fairly high against such permission being granted.

I also thought no government agency could declare BK, but that was only 7,11, &13. I was explained about CH.9 and realized my ignorance regarding BK laws; I am not omniscient and researched the law. So, CH.9 can be used to renegotiate contracts.

Thanks, RNUG. I heard the Ch. 9 law a few years ago from a state legislator. He seemed to think different, but, BK laws are fickle and you may be correct. I will check on it. Thanks
