*They’re calling around or considering bids: Emanuel’s surprise announcement didn’t give would-be candidates much time to act. Some did anyway. Among those not ruling out bids or making phone calls looking for support Tuesday were Bill Daley, the brother of former Mayor Richard M. Daley, GCM Grosvenor CEO Michael Sacks, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, 2011 mayoral candidate Gery Chico, state Comptroller Susana Mendoza, city Treasurer Kurt Summers, City Clerk Anna Valencia and Alds. Proco “Joe” Moreno, 1st; Ricardo Munoz, 22nd; Ameya Pawar, 47th; and Tom Tunney, 44th.
*They’re on people’s minds: A few high-profile political names emerged, but they didn’t comment publicly. On that list: former CPS CEO Arne Duncan, former White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, 2015 Emanuel foe Jesus “Chuy” Garcia and Democratic U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez.
*They’re already in: Emanuel faced a diverse army of challengers before his Tuesday decision: former Chicago Police Board leader Lori Lightfoot, Paul Vallas, former Chicago Police Department Superintendent Garry McCarthy, Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown, Chicago principals association President Troy LaRaviere, millionaire businessman Willie Wilson, activist Ja’Mal Green, tech entrepreneur Neal Sales-Griffin, attorney John Kozlar, pharmaceutical technician and DePaul student Matthew Roney, policy consultant Amara Enyia and Southwest Side attorney Jerry Joyce.
They’ve said no: Both former Gov. Pat Quinn and state Sen. Kwame Raoul said they’re not running.

This is all again a data point for why (while not actually a good idea) term limits for chief executives aren’t so bad. There are a lot of quality names on this list who would like to move up to this job, when it becomes vacant. That’s not necessarily true of every City Council or state legislative seat.

The two names that get my attention right off the bat are Mendoza and Preckwinkle.
Mendoza being close to Rahm, Preckwinkle not so much.
They both know how to organize, both are big on the stage.
It’s those type of candidacies that separate in a field of… 657 candidates.
Maybe the question i have is what heavy hitter that could win would want a city right now at a crossroad, one way will be difficult, the other will be treacherous. The Mayor’s Office is a heavy lift, why would heavy hitters want to be the one to take on this city at its most crucial time?
You can almost make the case the negatives right now outweigh the positives?
Rahm called Chicago’s Mayor one of the top 5 elected offices in America. Are the challenges this city is facing now, taking on those challenges might be daunting.
So, for me, the two names that jump out are Preckwinkle and Mendoza.
We’re 24 hours from Rahm leaving the race. Whew.

Family values from the Bungalow Belt. As noted on her twitter feed, her kids’ names are Dominick, Jewel, Osco, Wrigley, and Portillo, named for the places where they were conceived.
Don’t underestimate her one-on-one campaigning skills.

Gainer would be a strong candidate. I’m guessing she didn’t run because she thought her fundraising and policital base overlapped with the Mayor’s too much. That’s no longer a problem. She is a part of the City’s corporate class as a senior exec at Aon, and has a great opportunity to appeal to lakefront progressives and ethnic wards.

12,500 minimum - but a voter can only sign one for one candidate and candidates will try to get at least twice, preferably 3+ times the minimum, so we might have a situation where if candidates don’t start circulating in the next week, there won’t be any more registered voters to get signatures from.

Preckwinkle wins without a doubt. Mendoza not so sure, she not very well liked inside her own party don’t kid yourself. If she had a serious opponent for Comptroller that race would be the closest to turning over. Munger lost it, Mendoza didn’t win it….

Clinton and Duckworth were 15+ point winners.
Mendoza won by 4+ points.
It was Dems, Labor, and “Rauner” that kept Mendoza from losing. Where Munger’s Crew failed was letting weeks go by without being on the Tee-Vee.
Mendoza, with the right Crew, with her past work now against Rauner… she could make it interesting in February

Tom Tunney hits the nail on the head

The problem is much bigger than that in Illinois with the most anti business General Assembly in history.
Small business creates the majority of jobs and JB wants to punish sub chapter s corporations with higher taxes and zero reforms.
Unlike him, they won’t be able to remove toilets to avoid paying them, they will just hire less people.

Daley name is damaged, but he would be able to raise the cash. Rumors months ago were that Rahm would step out at this exact moment and Bill would get in.
I would think that Preckwinkle’s name is damaged beyond repair. She’s also got a lot of egg on her face for the creation of Kim Foxx and our lax enforcement of laws. She wears the jacket with Rahm crime spike over last four years.
Lisa Madigan comes from very damaged brand as well. She said she wasn’t running before. Stick to it. Or at least wait until your old man retires.
Mendoza wouldn’t shock me. She has her skeletons, but she can at least put on a soft face and presents herself as a likeable person, who did stand up to Rauner. But is she the Chicago version of Sarah Palin?

Ana Valencia would be a nightmare. Knows nothing about Chicago or politics except for being under Rahm’s wing. She needs another 15 years into the game for anyone to take her seriously.

my hope is that Rahm (or even…Obama) keeps himself out of the endorsement (or even perceived endorsement) game. When Rahm threw his hat in the ring the first time local media practically anointed him Mayor before he ever had a campaign event. Presumably, letting this play out for a few months gives some of these candidates time to breathe and make their cases. We haven’t had a wide open race in this city in at least a generation.

Assuming she want to be mayor, does Mendoza regret moving from city clerk to the comptroller’s office?
Running for comptroller and having a platform to bash Rauner has raised her profile, but if she was still city clerk she wouldn’t have the messy task of running for two offices at once.

That’s a cute excuse. But that JB funded his own campaign means there were a ton of typical Democratic donors with money to burn. And we’re seeing a ton of Democratic candidates across the country raising bank off of atypical donors.
The only reason Bill Daley and Chris Kennedy failed to raise money is that they failed to raise money.

Mendoza’s in a tricky spot because if she openly ran for Mayor, it would become the major issue in the Comptroller’s race. Now she still might beat Darlene Senger, but it risks mucking up a sure thing.
