The race for state Senate in the 48th District is getting kind of creepy — or at least crawly.
“Career politicians are like cockroaches; shine a light on them and they scurry,” says a deep-voiced narrator of a radio ad for GOP candidate SETH McMILLAN of Taylorville, the Christian County Republican chairman taking on state Sen. ANDY MANAR, D-Bunker Hill.
He says such politicians have “scurried around the halls of the state Capitol” for decades, doing things including giving “more control to corrupt Chicago politicians.”
The narrator says the solution is “firing career politicians and hiring an outsider.”
McMillan also tweeted a short video of a cockroach.
Kinda yucky.

Republican state senate candidate Seth McMillan failed to disclose a series of small, no-bid contracts his landscaping company secured with the Taylorville school district during a period of time when he sat on the district’s school board, according to documents obtained by WCIA.
“At the time, I did not view that as a conflict,” McMillan said on Tuesday. Without providing any evidence, he claimed that he only charged the school district for materials and labor and did not collect a profit. He did admit, however, that “It was an oversight and it was a mistake on my part.”
State law requires public officials to disclose such business relationships to the public each year. Penalties for willfully failing to disclose an arrangement can be as high as a $1,000 fine or jail time.
McMillan served on the Taylorville School Board from 2009 to 2017. During that period, his company, McMillan’s Landscape Company, invoiced the school district for charges totaling at least $7,196.34. At no time did McMillan report that income to the county clerk. […]
While he admits the error and says he has hired an attorney to file an amended return, McMillan says it was “inadvertent” and that “my company doing a yearly contract of a thousand dollars in some cases to fertilize the grass at a football field is not something to be blown out of proportion.”

Seth is just another do as I say not as I do Republican in the vein of Uncle Bruce and 45. Rant and rave that he is the solution while quietly doing what is best for himself.

If you’re receiving a check from a public entity while sitting on its board, there are 2 possibilities:
1) you’re brazen enough to think that the scrutiny won’t apply to you
2) you don’t think anyone will ever notice–you won’t get caught..
“Inadvertent” is complete BS. Seth say’s “inadvertent”, then implies that it doesn’t matter because it was “only $1000 yearly”. Pick a defense and stick with it, Seth.

McMillens response begs the question is he intentionally deceitful or merely grossly negligent. measuring their performances, he seems angry and defensive while Manar seems perfectly in control. And I love the ” Any endorsement” line from Manar…. That’s pure gold right there.

Treasury secretary nominee Timothy Geithner on Wednesday said he made “careless mistakes” when he did not pay all of his taxes while working at the International Monetary Fund and apologized to senators for adding to their burden when the economy is in the midst of a severe recession.
“These were careless mistakes,” Geithner told members of the Senate Finance Committee during his nearly four-hour confirmation hearing. “They were avoidable mistakes, but they were unintentional. I should have been more careful. I take full responsibility.”
Serve on the School Board for probably no pay so he can make under $8,000 over an eight year period for providing a service that no other landscaping company in town had a problem with it being no bid as this is just now coming to light.

Two wrongs don’t make a right. And yes - Geitner was particularly since he was going to be over the IRS. The 2-party standard represents a failed state.

Yes, he knew it twas wrong. Board members all swear an oath and go through training (mandated by a legislature that goes through no training). That stuff is a no no and he knew it.

I am sure that the people around Andy love him, but that doesn’t win elections. Having a campaign coffer that’s mid-six figures when your opponent has less than a tenth of the funds is what will assure Manar’s victory.-
But I’m not sure who exactly your referring to when you say ‘Manar’s People like him” I’ll branch out and say there’s three kinds of Manar “people” in Macoupin I’ve ran into.
There’s the fervent, passionate folks that have the same kind of closed-mindedness and tunnel-vision the Trumpians have for the Big Orange. You can’t have a discussion with those kinds of Manar people because they refuse to see anything critical or flawed in Manar because as far as the are concerned he is the best thing since industrialized agriculture. These folks are also generally bully’s to those that don’t share that same Manar-worship and almost always become associated with the Macoupin County Democrats.
Then there’s those that don’t know Andy and aren’t particularly involved in the political scene and only know him because he cares a lot about animals and kids from his commercials and he media.
Then there’s everyone else, that assumes since he’s a career politician that has spent most of his adult life in Springfield and Chicago that he’s just like every other IL politician. They are skeptical or worse.

JSM, excellent point on the mandated training.
Oh, and Maxwell also pointed out that McMillan did work for three other school districts, also not reported on his statements. McMillan says he “didn’t make any money” on the pest control work at the ball fields, as if that excuses the ethical lapse. Geez.

How is it possible that we are only discussing the penalty for failing to disclose?
This is blatant self-dealing, conflict of interest and possibly bid-rigging. This is criminal mis use of public funds to the highest degree. How is it even possibly that this is legal in IL for someone to give themselves a contract?
