Today, the Rauner campaign is launching a new TV ad featuring Diana Rauner titled “This Election is a Choice.”
In the ad, Diana directly addresses Illinois voters about the stakes of this election. She outlines the clear choice voters face in November: continue fighting for reform with Governor Rauner or go back to the same policies that have hurt Illinois for decades with JB Pritzker and Mike Madigan.

I’m Diana Rauner. Bruce ran for governor to try and save our state. It hasn’t been easy, but nothing important ever is. Bruce took on the big problems: education funding reform, Medicaid reform, criminal justice reform. He stopped the insanity and delivered. But 40 years of mismanagement can’t be turned around in 4 years. This election is a choice. Do we keep moving towards reform, or go back to the status quo that got us into this mess?

In featuring Diana Rauner, the Rauner campaign is acknowledging the need to appeal to female voters, particularly socially moderate women in the traditionally GOP suburbs, in his re-election contest with Democrat J.B. Pritzker.
At the same time, the governor, himself, has been spending time campaigning Downstate to try to unify a socially conservative GOP base unhappy with his signature on laws expanding abortion, immigrant and gay rights. […]
Diana Rauner’s script also is noteworthy.
By talking about education, Medicaid and criminal justice, she’s talking about issues of interest to those moderate suburban women without touching on the more controversial issues surrounding the governor — such as abortion rights — that could anger conservatives.

It’s a good ad that finally breaks the monotony of Madigan ads. She is very good on camera, comes across as much more likeble than her husband (something that’s true for almost all First Ladies). Not sure how many Illinoisans are going to agree with her message though.

If by “Medicaid reform” she means dropping people with developmental disabilities (many of whom have never worked) off of Medicaid & SNAP rolls, then yes. He’s done a heckuva job with that.

At least she’s not a flat out phony calling herself a Democrat…
… and let’s remember, as Diana surely does, when The Ounce was owed over $7 million from her husband’s administration, it was the Pritzker family, including JB Pritzker that bailed out The Ounce, with an influx of $5 million, and the glowing words for JB Pritzker… and why is that so important… it was Diana Rauner herself, when other non-profits were crumbling, folding, laying off workers, Diana Rauner called these decisions by these other non-profits… “a business decision”… a decision by these groups forced upon them as Bruce squeezed to not only close these non-profits, but to force an agenda in this state that in no way had 60 and 30.

This is terrible. All it’s going to do is remind people that Bruce chose to put in place Diana’s left wing abortion policy. Who thought it was a good idea to use Diana the Democrat (unless this is aimed toward independents)? It’s certainly not going to help bring the Ives voters back.

the governor’s director of mental health might want to put out a statement admonishing the first lady for her cavalier use of “insanity” for political gain.
Maybe something like …
“For a political leader to perpetuate this stigma to score political points is completely inappropriate and we respectfully request that our leaders stop doing so,” said a statement attributed to Diana Knaebe, state mental health division director.

The ads she was featured in four years ago were the best of the campaign from either side — I don’t know if Rauner would have won without them.
Maybe I’m too much of an insider to appreciate the personal appeal, but the genuine and almost apolitical feel of those ads from ‘14 is missing here. There’s an air of desperation now.

To those who draw a line at taxpayer funded abortions as “too far”…
To those actual Republicans, not Raunerites, who are tired of Raunerism and the Uber-left, costal, limousine liberal social agenda…
… this ad is a clear reminder… Diana Rauner is part owner of the ILGOP… and her orchestration in this administration, emails included… Diana Rauner wants more of the same with that agenda that is not even in the ball park of 80% Republican… but 100% Raunerism.

This is likely the best that Rauner can do given the position he’s put himself in. Done right an ad like this can counter balance all of the negative ads by reminding us of all of the Governor’s successes. But the successes that Diana mentions are unfamiliar and in many instances occurred in spite of Rauner’s better instincts. In many respects it only underscores his lack of accomplishments. And I have no clue what “insanity” he’s stopped. He didn’t remove chaos from state government, he amplified it. And if these are the only measurable results that he can point to its a sad commentary on his tenure.

Rauner wasn’t fighting, Bruce Rauner wanted to hurt Illinois.

I’m pretty sure Governor Gridlock’s definition of reform differs from what reform means to most Illinoisans. Reform is the nonsense word that Republicans toss out there to hide their destruction of the working poor in this country. With Bruce’s idea of reform, we have dead veterans and the ensuing coverup, backporch deals, destruction of universities, and the wholesale abandonment of the poor and working people of the state…some reform huh?

Skeptical this will work this time. Last election Diana was just the loving wife and “lifelong Democrat.” This time, there’s a record that she’s been pulling the strings and calling the shots. Maybe that’s just known among the insiders but just don’t think she’ll resonate as a validator the way they did last time.

Diana does not look like the suburban successful wife she looked like four years ago. This looks like a campaign ad plain and simple.
It’s not relaxed, it’s not an off the cuff conversation with voters.

Not reforming Illinois is the status quo, which Democrats have been running on for 40 years.
No reforms to pensions, government, workers comp, redistricting, term limits, property taxes etc.
Illinois residents have the least faith in their government of any state but Democrats will not change course.
Why are Democrats clinging to the same policies that has led to population loss and the exodus of many businesses?
Between 2000 and 2010, the population of Illinois grew by a mere 3.3%, compared to the national average US population growth of 9.7%.
Illinois population has grown by just over 200,000 people since 2003 while the US population has grown by 36 million people.

This is a strange ad. Nowhere does it say “Bruce Rauner”, “Governor Rauner”, or even “vote for Bruce”.
Sure assumes a lot on the viewer’s part - starting with even knowing who Diana Rauner is. I doubt her ID is all that high, but apparently they think that’s better than using the face or even the name of their 26% approval candidate.

Time for a Reality Check
This is a strange ad. Nowhere does it say “Bruce Rauner”, “Governor Rauner”, or even “vote for Bruce”.
I’m Diana Rauner. Bruce ran for governor to try and save our state.
Not a whole lot of ambiguity there for anyone who is a likely voter.
How many people do you think won’t realize who she is and who she is advocating for?
If Bruce Rauner’s goal was just to avoid the dreaded Millionaire’s tax he could have just moved instead of spending over 100 million dollars to run for Governor don’t you think?

Earnest, that’s a very helpful link and reminder about the Rauners’ hypocrisy.
Just a little more than a year ago, Rauner called reporters “pathetic,” “disgusting,” and “despicable” for questioning his wife’s documented role in his campaign and administration.

OW, that ain’t the half of it. Mrs. Rauner was able to quietly, outside the public eye, push her not-for-profit to the front of the line and be part of a process that resulted in many school districts losing their pre school for all funding. Including an entire three-county region. They did this by setting the standards for the program. A huge conflict of interest.
Does the Ounce provide services? Yes, and good ones. Does Mrs. Rauner profit? no. But other schools are hurt by this.
The ad is an F.

Quinn was an abysmal failure, and by being that failure and leaving labor to vote against their better selves, Rauner knew… “Pat Quinn failed” was the play… and it worked.

I’m uncomfortable with political spouses doing ads for their husbands, so I’m probably biased.
Ed reform? Is that code for “defunding public universities” and “issuing an AV of SB1″? Wow.
Surprised she didn’t tout her husband as shadow plaintiff in a SCOTUS case that did away with fair share payments - he’s proud of that, and if you’re anti-worker & anti-union, it was a huge victory/ accomplishment.
I’m musing about whether the Rauners will choose Tuscany (wine country) as the site of their new home.
I think they might quite like Venice; a palazzo along the Grand Canal won’t cost more than his two gubernatorial campaigns.

I am agreeing, my point is Rich, McKinney, and Vock make a case that has more there than both you and I could ever be allowed to comment on.

The politics of beating Quinn, how Quinn governed, and Quinn’s legacy are 3 totally complicated and quirky tangents, as only Quinn could bring them.
The reality is Quinn failed… and Rauner called him on it.

I thought her use of the term “Choice” was interesting given how that term is used in context of politics and her husbands stance on “Choice” that alienates a significant part of his base.

Indeed, Quinn left a complicated legacy that many consider an overall failure. But he left the state on a fiscally responsible path, unlike Rauner, who never actually tried.
If Rauner had the guts to propose a budget that allowed a tax cut, I would have respected him, even if I might not agree. But we know he didn’t because he didn’t care about that. Only killing labor.

Polling at 26/52 approval - disapproval… Rauner is… known… as a failure.
Rauner is an incumbent. Rauner’s failures speak for themselves.

No, he turned it up to 11, and pretty sure his poll numbers suggest most voters think likewise. Not sure how anyone involved in this ad thought that line was anywhere close to believable unless they’re drinking Trump-strength kool-aid.
