Sanguinetti: “Bruce Rauner has been the only one to stand up to Mike Madigan”

Posted in:

* This is a digital ad…

Today, the Rauner campaign is launching a new ad featuring Lt. Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti titled “Spring Chicken.”

In the ad, the Lt. Governor says that she was only three months old when Mike Madigan was sworn into power, and she’s no “spring chicken.” It’s why Governor Rauner is the right choice in November, because he is the only person who has stood up to the culture of corruption that Mike Madigan has cultivated for decades, and he will continue to work for reform throughout his second term.

* The ad

* Transcript

Lt. Governor Sanguinetti: “When Mike Madigan was sworn into power, I was three months old. I am no spring chicken, but this has been a lot of time for him to drive the state down. And now, he has JB Pritzker who he’s annointed. Bruce Rauner has been the only one to stand up to Mike Madigan, to stand up to the status quo, and that’s why this election is so important. It’s about our families and keeping our families here.”

…Adding… Two people have sent me this screenshot this morning. Notice the typos…

  6. It’s a very well done ad. She’s not popular on this forum. That said, she presents very nicely here and makes a strong, easy to understand point.

  7. This would be more effective if she cried a little bit. But seriously his standing up the Mike Madigan put us in an addition $10 billion in debt. sounds fiscally responsible to me.

  9. Wow…Mike Madigan was “sworn into power” on his first day in the state legislature in 1971? That’s impressive.

    I understand the need for hyperbole during a campaign, but sheesh, Rauner & Co seem to twist themselves into pretzels trying to make this point.

    Comment by Colin O'Scopy Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 10:23 am

  10. Well, she clearly doesn’t want her taxes lowered.

    Comment by Lt Guv Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 10:23 am

  11. No, the message in this ad is incorrect, and frankly, juvenile. BVR “standing up” to MJM is not about “our families.” It’s about a bitter personal feud that takes the state and “our families” as hostages.

  15. Still more if the same old stuff. Still “reforms,” but no details so we can assume this the same old turn around agenda that went no where in the first term.

    And when did Rauner stand up to Madigan? Are they referring to the budget impasse that nearly ruined the state’s bond rating? Or are they saying that general name calling is standing up to someone?

    Comment by A Jack Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 10:30 am

  16. =She’s not popular on this forum. =

    This is n’t the only place, Team Rauner is polling at 27% so this isn’t the only place. Seems not many places view them favorably.

  17. Someday Bruce and Evelyn will tell us how long the “status quo” is. I suspect it exempts the time period from 1/12/15 through 1/20/19

    Must be a mistake huh?

  27. 3.9 on a 5 point scale. “Anointed by Madigan” misses the point that a majority of Dem. Primary voters did not support JBP. JBP has not given the folks that rejected his candidacy a reason to vote for him.
    The only reason for the Dem voters to support JBP is he is running against the Bruce- - actually I guess that is a pretty good reason to vote for JPB.

  30. ==a majority of Dem. Primary voters did not support JBP. JBP has not given the folks that rejected his candidacy a reason to vote for him.==

    And yet, he’s not the one down 17 points with his primary rival continuing to brief against him and another member of his party on the ballot to challenge him.

    Comment by Arsenal Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 11:05 am

  31. If you are anti-Madigan, you know that Rauner isn’t the only one to stand up to Madigan.

    You would also know that Madigan got what he wanted anyway.

    Standing up to the Madigan Status Quo? For Rauner, that’s just another one of his failures.

    Comment by VanillaMan Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 11:07 am

  32. ‘Stand up to Madigan’. Hmm. Seemed more like he fought dirty just like a bully. Resorted to calling Madigan, unions, anyone else he didn’t like corrupt. Took the lunch money of social service agencies, his own employees and lots of others just because he could.

    Again- stop with the hyperbole about the other guy. What’s your guy going to do to fix the hole he dug deeper?

  33. She has a great point. What is the condition of Illinois? I’m in my mid-60’s. I was in high school when MJM first was elected.

    Think about it!

  36. Rauner’s poll numbers are Madiganesque. That’s the ultimate irony, that you hate someone so much you become him/her.

  39. ==LOL, the production values couldn’t be lower.==

    Not arguing this point. It’s a talking head testimonial ad. How high do they have to be. It does what it’s designed to do. It’s well done, well scripted, comes across sincere. It gets the job done. But, no, it won’t win an Emmy.

  41. It’s more of the same message and given the current polling that message isn’t working. Of course they don’t have any other message to put out there other than: “Hi, I’m Bruce Rauner. I failed as a Governor.”

    Comment by Demoralized Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:04 pm

  42. Voters need a Sanguinetti v Stratton debate.

    Comment by Blockage Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:29 pm

  43. Arsenal
    Yep. You are right about the poll numbers.
    In Illinois it is hard to believe Bruce or any major party candidate would be down by so much, but all the polls that are made public show a big gap.
    In many ways it is still a bit early, but what is going to move
    the numbers?
    Somehow Bruce needs to show JBP is “out of the
    mainstream”. The Madigan noise just doesn’t do that. Madigan has never been of anything illegal in 47 years so enough of the corruption noise and I think it is safe to say his policy views are generally pretty middle of the road over decades.
    Bruce needs to move off his personal vendetta and start to run against JBP and not MM.
    Really tired of the Madigan Ads.

    Comment by Back to the Future Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 12:33 pm

  44. I hope JBP runs an add with Rainer in a hole digging it deeper and deeper and asking for 4 more years so he can keep digging to find the buried treasure from the Titanic and then the camera pans back and shows he is digging in the middle of Illinois.

    In most ways, it’s not. People will cast ballots in 8 days.

  46. And, let’s see, how many folks said on yesterday’s “Advice for Rauner” QOTD, “Give up the Madigan-bashing?”

    Quite a few, IIRC.

    This approach just doesn’t cut it for me. The sloppiness is also inexcusable.

    I think that’s us, though. We’re been hearing it his whole term and we’re high-information voters, so of course we’re sick of it. Most voters aren’t seeing it on CapFax every day, though. I still believe it is his strongest message, though I don’t know if it’s strong enough for him to win on it.

    Comment by Arsenal Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 1:44 pm

  48. The Madigan angle is played Out. Every ad about MJM is wasted money. Rauner has to find something that means more to voters or he is toast.

    Comment by Prediction Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 2:17 pm

  49. Prediction—Likely JB will win. However, go on twitter, go on FB, go on Linkedin. There is a ton of anger for MJM. Many feel he is the reason the residents of Illinois have a huge debt problem, have high real estate taxes, have high sales taxes.

    Comment by Anonymous Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 4:11 pm

  50. If the state of Illinois is to survive we must as citizens of Illinois vote out the Madigan machine we all suffered in this state long enough let Mr. RAUNER voice be heard and let’s take back our state

    Comment by Huh? Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 6:17 pm

  52. Early in 1.4% term, he told his cabinet that he would “take the arrows”. Instead, 1.4% has run around the state blaming all his problems on Madigan and others.

    Comment by Huh? Wednesday, Sep 19, 18 @ 6:19 pm
