* JB Pritzker today…
He was asked how he’d pay for his ambitious plan for higher education he announced Wednesday. It includes big increases in state aid.
His response, “We can help pay for that thru cuts in state government I’ve suggested. I’ve proposed investments in savings that we could have both in our Medicaid budget and our education budget by investing in early childhood education. Finally, I’ve suggested we might legalize sports betting or look at other expansion of gambling in the state. And then legalize marijuana and tax it.”
He’s suggested cuts in state government? What?
I asked him last year where he would cut and he responded by saying he’d shift people out of nursing homes and into in-home care, spend more on homeless prevention and more on community-based intervention programs to lessen juvenile crime.
That ain’t gonna save much.
And spending more on early childhood education will likely have positive long-term fiscal benefits, but I wouldn’t predicate funding higher education based on that. Same goes for legalizing marijuana. We’ll save some money, but you can’t really bank that.
Also, this almost goes without saying, but Pritzker has said many times that he wants to use gaming and pot money for capital projects. He only started talking about using it for higher ed yesterday.

An audience member asked Pritzker how as governor he would support the middle class. He said his plan is to drastically lower taxes for most residents in the state.
“We ask people like Bruce Rauner and me to pay a little bit more. It’ll help us to pay for our k-12 education system. Today we rely on property taxes mostly to pay for our schools in Illinois and that is not how most states do it,” Pritzker said.
Paying half the cost of K-12 would cost the state at least $5 billion. All while “drastically” cutting taxes for most residents in the state. Right.

You know, when you’ve never had to make tough decisions, never had to develop and lead teams, never had to inspire people, these type of fumbles and bumbles happen.
JB isn’t going to lower taxes and we all know it.

I think that anyone who says they are going to lower taxes in Illinois is delusional or trying to tell you what they want to hear. There are lots of very tough decisions ahead if Illinois wants to right its economic ship. As voters, we have not shown a great ability to face this truth, thus the necessary campaign promises.

I would think JB making cuts would be something the Rauner supporters would get behind. But they just cant acknowledge anything positive about him.

You would think, for once, a candidate would come along to meet the moment and offer legitimate solutions to the problems that plague us. Until then, the suffering continues.

Peoples’ hatred of Rauner is totally blinding voters as to how much of what JB says is BS. You drastically lower taxes on the middle class and raise taxes on the wealthy- guess what- you end up with a lot less money then what we get with today’s flat tax rate. JB is an empty suit who happens to be able to give the Dems a lot of money so they fell in line behind him. Blago was a better candidate then JB

In Quinn’s FY 15 budget he had two budgets. One kept existing tax levels with no cuts and one that had about a 25% cut to allow tax levels to phase down. The screaming about the Doom’s Day version was very loud. Quinn showed where cuts could happen and he paid the price. So here comes that scenario again, but the talk is all talk. “I’m gonna lower taxes”…but nothing on what gets cut. “I’m gonna expand education/roads/social services” (pick whatever)… but no details on where the money comes from. Current dollars going to be swished around and redistributed? Meantime serious costs keep rising. Anyone can talk some vague concepts that sound OK. Trouble is giving reasonable estimates simply creates a target to collect those arrows and provides more screaming oppo commercials. As tax paying voter give me something beside platitudes. Simply not seeing much from any of these guys.

Well we’re stuck with JB now. Hopefully he’ll do better once he’s in office, but he better raise his game in a hurry. Once in office, he’ll have a brief honeymoon period where he can blame his predecessor. Then he’ll blame the economy. Then he’ll get blamed for everything, and it’s going to get ugly.
Gambling and weed can’t fund everything he’s promising.

JB should find a dark cave to hide in until the election is over. He can only hurt himself. Let Rauner flounder and lash out. JB’s greatest strength is that he’s not Rauner. Rauner is an epic failure.

Why do you believe Illinois can be “Governed” effectively with the complete obstruction instead of self professed “cooperative professionalism” promised by the legislative body controlled by Speaker Madigan?
Only revenue increases are possible, no meaningful reforms or cuts will pass muster.
Past is prologue and the Speaker is totally incapable of passing a constitutionally mandated balanced budget for decades.
Why do you all just focus on the past 3 1/2 years instead of the common denominator of the past few decades of dysfunction?
Because you agree with the Speaker on everything

Rauner admitted keeping Dunkin in NYC to stop an override.
Rauner has failed Illinois.
A mere 24% approve of Rauner… “fewer than 1 in 4 approve”
Voters think Rauner is a failed governor. So… there’s that.

Fortunately, JB doesn’t have to persuade knowable Capitol Fax readers. JB isn’t going to cut anything in the budget . Taxes will probably be going up , not down for anyone.

As it should be until we get out of this budget/debt mess. We also need a spending freeze to the extent possible to go along with it. If only we voters had the courage to ask for or at least accept that.

As OW said, these are the names on the ballot. Rauner was elected to fix our state. Instead he made it exponentially worse. JB is not the ideal candidate but it will not be 4 more years of Raunerization.

Unless you are a public sector employee or a beneficial if some govt social program, 18 months from now after your income tax rates, property taxes go up you will become very disenchanted with JB. If you want to place a wager- your house values will continue to lag the nation’s trend upwards. On January 2 JB will announce a settlement of the AFSMCE contract with a sizable pop in costs. Just wait and watch

End the Rauner bashing - it is a waste of everyone time.
When you see Buzz Word JD with no plan and no clue talk about “cuts” I fear the next four years will be worse that the last. the 12.

Rauner has earned the bashing in spades. You very well may be right about JB, but looks like he may get a chance to show us.
What we need is a one term Governor that makes the tough decisions necessary to get the state back on track. Increased revenue with spending cuts or at least a freeze. This will be very tough to do if you want to be reelected.
