Here we go again!

* This is exactly the sort of hypothetical speculation that got Pritzker into hot water over the mileage tax and the service tax…

Gas tax? Part of a list of things we could look at, Pritzker says. Doesn't like that it's regressive, though #twill

— Steve Daniels (@stevedaniels27) September 28, 2018

Voters don’t do nuance. Pritzker fully understood that concept in the primary when he went after Chris Kennedy and Daniel Biss over their nuanced and limited kinda/sorta support for a maybe/possible tax on retirement income. He zapped them both with harsh TV ads and now he’s getting zapped by Rauner on the mileage tax.

* The Daily Herald, by the way, is not pleased that Pritzker is running away from the mileage tax that he suggested he could look at as a pilot project

There’s a great irony in Pritzker calling Rauner a liar. It is Pritzker who, with our Editorial Board earlier this year, raised the possibility of a tax on vehicle mileage — and now denies that he mentioned it. Even though it’s fully recorded. Denied it outright Thursday night even when Carol Marin gave him a chance to acknowledge but downplay what he’d said.

  1. Yeah, but we probably should be taxing at least some of the federally taxed retirement income.

    Key word: federally taxed.

We’ve got millionaires writing off 100% of their State Income Tax obligation because they’re claiming guaranteed payments to partners on Schedule K-1s.

Why do the People of Illinois need to support retired millionaires?

Retired low income folks, sure. But millionaires?

  2. So a gaming expansion is now going to pay for…broadband?

When JB holds his seminar explaining how he spends the same dollar multiple times, I’ll be in the front row.

  3. We keep repeating that “voters don’t do nuance”, yet you keep demanding that Pritzker give specific answers to complicated taxation questions that can’t be answered without nuance? That’s a recipe for disaster. Pritzker should keep doing what he’s doing, no need to change now with such a big lead. It’d be nice for all of us, but it’s not necessary to win this race - which is, after all, his main goal at the moment.

  4. The election authorities should just change the ballots for November to call this a race for “Illinois Santa Claus.”

  5. He should’ve sent a press release and skipped the interview.

  6. I want him to tell us the truth. It’s OK. We can handle it.

He won’t win the votes of the anti-taxers. He needs to win over us who understand how taxes work and want to know if he’s a nut.

His near lack of detail is coming off as dishonesty.

  7. =When JB holds his seminar explaining how he spends the same dollar multiple times, I’ll be in the front row.=

I saw him at one of the Rauner seminar’s on how you include revenue for the Thomson Center sale in every annual budget. That is where he learned it I guess.

  8. Pritzker has to answer in general non-specific terms because Mike hasn’t filled him in yet. They’ll get there

  9. I just don’t see him making changes as long as he believes he’s up by double-digits. The NBC poll was in the beginning of August. Surely another legit poll will be done soon, but I haven’t seen anything. For an election with so much money involved, I can’t believe there’s only been two polls done.

  10. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - is right. JB is damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t.

One thing is for sure, Pritzker is not as disciplined as Rauner when it comes to sticking to evasive talking points.

Comment by Roman Friday, Sep 28, 18 @ 11:53 am

  11. JB is just following Rauner’s lead on no details. Rauner didn’t provide any details the first time he ran for office.

  12. In many campaigns the lack of details could be a major problem.

However JB is running against a prevaricator of the highest order and to be the only candidate providing details is what gives Rauner any chance at victory.

  13. ===Rauner didn’t provide any details the first time he ran===

Yes he did. Not a lot, but he did.

  14. Just for reference pointing out well Rauner didn’t either doesn’t exactly instill confidence here folks
