Today, the Pritzker campaign released a new TV ad, “Throw,” ahead of the second gubernatorial debate.
In 2014, Bruce Rauner said, “give me four years, and I’ll say to the voters, ‘throw me out of office in four years if I don’t deliver results.’” After four years of failure, it’s clear Rauner hasn’t delivered results.
“For four years, Bruce Rauner has utterly failed Illinois — creating a two-year budget crisis while over a million Illinoisans lost services and holding up funding for neighborhood public schools while property taxes increased across the state,” said Pritzker campaign communications director Galia Slayen. “One thing Rauner might actually accomplish is his prediction from 2014: not delivering results and getting thrown out of office.”

Pritzker’s ad, talking about his mother. That is the best ad of the entire cycle, by miles. Miles and miles. None have touched it.

That’s perfect. I hear what Arsenal is saying, but I feel like this quote reinforces the bombardment of other ads that speak to specifics. The polling already shows folks think he is a failure. This ad nicely feeds into that narrative.

I think he wanted to close one or more state universities.
I think he wanted to starve out some social services.
I think he wanted his union demands, and if they were not met, the two thoughts I have above were features, not bugs… win-win, if you will… destruction guaranteed.
Diana, for her part, got an uber-left, costal, limousine liberal agenda signed over the bought Raunerites that Diana and Bruce held.
Rauner failed, he got “nothing” done. Rauner needs to go.

I agree with Arsenal and others, that the ad should have examples and that those stats can (and are) shown in other ads.
Very powerful ad. It’s Rauner saying he doesn’t deserve another chance if he fails. It’s Rauner doing skyhook in reverse on himself (h/t OW).

This is a 15 second bite: it’s easy to tack on multiple, 15-second litanies of his failures and make a dozen variations of this spot.

2018 Rauner is lucky that he’s not running against 2014 Rauner.
That 2014 Rauner had strict standards of accountability for the Illinois governor.

The ambiguity of the “results” is what makes it powerful and ironic. Rich often says voters don’t do nuance, but you can take if further and say, “The subconscious knows no negation.” Essentially means that years of Rauner and Co. bad-mouthing IL is ultimately going to come back to haunt them, as voters will associate Rauner with the mess. Point being, this ad is based on fact, but is really appealing to perception (a perception largely reinforced by Rauner messaging). Just so happens the two are near-identical in this case.

Are there a lot of people out there who don’t know that he’s failed? I get the point of spelling it out, but I think that would bury the power of him in his own words. And people can supply their own reasons pretty well at this point.

These are :15’s which they’ll probably run as bookends which means you’ll a) see them twice as often as :30’s and b) you’ll probably see them twice in the same ad block. In 2006 Blagojevich ran all those “What’s She Thinking” spots as :15’s. This will likely really burn in.

Governors own.
The real crux of Skyhook in reverse working was that Rauner was helping all along. Odd, yet true.
Every time, as we all here wondered aloud… “he knows he’s governor, right?”… Rauner set a table for the reversal.
Governors also own good. It’s like no one told Rauner that too.
Compromises, budgets, policies, agendas… passed things with signatures, good things… Rauner coulda owned lots of good.
But… here he is.
It’s the second best ad, only eclipsed by the single best ad of the entire cycle, Pritzker talking about his mom, and that will most likely not be touched.

This is a solid punch in the mouth. Now, they can follow with specifics like, dead vets, cancer clusters, no budget, a billion dollars wasted because of Illinois not paying bills and specific lies. Down goes Rauner, down goes Rauner.

I love Comptroller Mendoza’s comment on his refusal to put State Employees in their correct steps ““It’s particularly ironic that this Administration has expended hundreds of millions of dollars for Information Technology consultants with the goal of improving administrative functions at the same time he whines that basic payroll costs can’t be calculated because it’s too difficult,”

I watched “Dark Money” on POV last night. If you don’t think Rauner didn’t know what he was doing, think again. The National Right to Work group’s playbook was uncovered in the research done by what would become the Montana Free Press. It was very enlightening to see the interconnections between Citizen’s United, RTW, FEC, and much more. When John Adams does his flowchart, it looks a lot like several we’ve seen developed around IPI and Friends here in Illinois. You can watch it free online, or check your local PBS station-

Not only did Rauner fail with Afscme if the steps are implemented with back pay and interest as it looks like may occur. State employees will have and enjoyed several years of insurance at the levels of the old contract and still get the raises.

Let the voters fill in the blanks with their own list of grievances against Rauner.
Bluntly, they cannot all be listed in 15 seconds, or even 15 minutes.
