Been seeing a couple of media outlets reporting that today is the last day to register to vote in Illinois. THIS IS NOT THE CASE.

Illinois: The deadline to register in person is Oct. 9. The deadline to register online is Oct. 21. After that, residents can register and vote at a local election office during a “grace period.”

The deadline for registering to vote or re-registering at a local board of elections office in Illinois is Tuesday, Oct. 9.
If you miss the deadline you can still register online through the State Board of Elections for the next two weeks, until Oct. 22.
You can also register to vote on Election Day at the board of elections office. If you choose to register to vote on Election day, you cannot register at your polling place, unless your polling place is the board of elections office.
Sigh. Just horrible reporting there.
It goes on and on and on, but you get the idea.

Regular registration is available year-round with exception to the 27-day period prior to an election, or 16 days prior through online paperless voter applications available on the State Board of Elections website. […]
Grace period registration is an extension of the regular registration deadline from the 27th day prior to an election through Election Day. Grace period registration is only available “in-person” at sites authorized by each election authority.
* The Board also has a handy online calendar. Today is indeed the final day of “regular registration,” either for in-person or when your registration form is mailed in. “Grace period” registration begins tomorrow and lasts all the way through election day. Online voter registration has been continuous and closes at 11:59:59 pm on October 21st.
* As for same-day registration/voting (it has to be done at the same time), here’s where you can register/vote…
Office of the election authority, at a permanent polling place, at any other early voting site, … at a polling place on election day, or at a voter registration location specifically designated for this purpose by the election authority.
There are different rules for counties under 100,000 which do not use electronic poll books.
The only time you can’t register to vote in Illinois is the day or two after the election.

There’s also been confusion on when Early Voting starts.
Pritzker has been running “Vote Early Now” ads on Facebook for several days. Media are reporting other candidates also saying early voting is open.
My local village hall is an early voting site and the village info all says it doesn’t begin til Oct. 22.

It’s been said many times on CapFax that “voters don’t do nuance”. Apparently the media also don’t do nuance when it comes to the voter registration laws.

There are locations you can vote early at now, including most clerks offices. These are called permanent early voting locations.

A lot of the confusion is terminology. Registration, grace period, early, early outside of main office, online registration, and election day registration. The legislation just added days and used the same names. There really isn’t a close of registration just how or where you can register. Grace period was extended through election day, early voting was two weeks, then 39 days when they took “absentee” out of the statute. Different size counties have different rules on Election Day.
This is what happens when legislation gets passed at the last minute and parts are inserted or dropped at the last second.

You can register AND vote at early voting locations. You cannot just register during EV. You also have to vote. Starting tomorrow, there is Grace Period voting. There now is no practical difference between Grace Period and regular EV. EV starts on Oct 22. Grace period voting locations are limited. In the city, I believe it is just downtown. In suburban Cook County, it is at the five suburban courthouses. In the other counties, it is just at the county clerk’s office. Widespread EV at numerous locations starts on Oct 22. It will go seven days a week through and including Monday, Nov 5. You can request a mail ballot up to the Thursday (I think) before the election. Mail ballots have not been sent out yet. But you can put your request in.
I am a suburban Cook election judge. I also do EV. Please keep in mind that EV does not just mean the day or weekend before the election. Please come in before that. Also, do your voter prep ahead of time. Do not do your research while at the voting machine. We get lines with people tying up the machines.

With respect to voter registration. Today was the last day that a Deputy Registrar could register voters (and, I am pretty sure it was the last day you could register to vote at an SOS DMV office).
