IMA-backed group runs positive ad for Rauner

Posted in:

* The Economic Freedom Alliance just reported spending $1.4 million on a new TV ad supporting Gov. Bruce Rauner

Notice how the ad is so super positive, but Gov. Rauner isn’t shown until the 12-second mark (and then only briefly) and his name doesn’t appear on screen until five seconds before the ad ends. The thinking may be that when a candidate is as unpopular as Rauner is, they had to set a positive mood before bringing him fully on screen or people would tune out. That’s one reason why I think Rauner’s own recent positive ad doesn’t work well.

The Economic Freedom Alliance is funded by the Illinois Manufacturers Association. No word on where the IMA is getting all this cash. You’ll recall they spent big bucks against Sam McCann this month and ran a “toilet” ad against JB Pritzker.

  1. Wasted money. Better off donating that money to the needy.

  2. Generic and weak. “We still believe in Bruce Rauner” without touting successes is like an admission of failure. Yeah we know Quinn’s jobs numbers were better, the bill backlog tripled, the deficit exploded, social services and higher ed were slashed, but we still believe…

  3. How the heck does this warm-and-fuzzy jibe with Rauner’s “this might be our last chance” message?

You can’t have it both ways.

–No word on where the IMA is getting all this cash.–

Back before the 2014 GOP primary, there was a wildly generous, dark-money Cincinnati lawyer with a strangely inordinate interest in Illinois politics.

  4. Lighting money on fire. “We believe in Bruce Rauner” but can’t say a single good thing he’s done or is going to do.

“We tried Bruce…” they’ll be able to say when they visit his Tuscan villa.

Just kidding, of course. There won’t be any invites. Besides his family, the only relationships Bruce has in this world are transactional.

  5. Doesn’t fit anything Rauner has done so far.

This ad or something similar should have been run in June. You’re 27 days out and under 30% popularity. Building your brand as someone folks wanted back in the office should have priority one. Your brand is toxic. Your brand has been hampered and destroyed by your lack of self awareness.

Remember the quote- I’ll take the arrows.

You never took one on purpose. You have been hit with a bunch but you don’t willingly take those arrows they just seem to find you all the time. You deflect blame and criticism constantly. You can’t handle being responsible and saying yeah I didn’t think that all the way through.

These are character flaws that make you a poor leader. Under 30% popularity as a sitting Governor ugh. Too little too late on the positive message.

  6. Contrasting with everything else out there…this is a very pretty ad.

  7. The EFA proposes to “reward” the hard-working middle-class referred to in the video with 4 more years of Bruce Rauner, arguably the worst performing and most destructive governor in Illinois history. Interesting that a number of organizations with the names of liberty or freedom in their title support policies detrimental to the middle class.

  10. ‘We believe in Illinois’ and I just saw the ‘last chance’ ad last night on TV. I guess you can be both sides of the coin at one time.

  11. Anyone else interpret the message as “There are still people who believe in Illinois.

And then there’s us. We back Bruce Rauner.”

  12. The Edgerton Daily News uses IMA press releases verbatim for their editorials.

  13. When you spend monies to support a candidate/incumbent and you can’t put the person, visually, in the ad, but have to sneak them in… and surprisingly have that candidate’s name appear at the end… that’s big time problems.

I can’t rate an ad that takes stacks of $20s and throws them in a pile to be a big bonfire celebrating a futile attempt o help Bruce Rauner.
