Supporters of Susana Mendoza have begun circulating nominating petitions to get her on the ballot in the crowded race for Chicago mayor — but the Illinois comptroller still insists she’s only focused on the reelection campaign to keep her current job.
The petitions were passed around Saturday at the downtown “Women’s March to the Polls” by volunteers from a committee formed last month to “draft” Mendoza to run for mayor, an effort led by former U.S. Civil Rights Commission chairman Marty Castro.
A Mendoza spokesman declined to comment on Saturday. Mendoza has said she’s “flattered” by calls for her to jump in the race, but is “entirely focused on her reelection campaign as comptroller.”

When asked on October 3rd if she would run for Mayor, Susana Mendoza responded, “I’m not lying to you when I tell you I’m not even close to making a decision on that.” Just 10 days later, reports surfaced of petitions being circulated for Mendoza’s Chicago mayoral run. Illinois Republican Party Executive Director Travis Sterling issued the following in response:
“Just 10 days ago Mendoza told journalists that she wasn’t even close to making a decision on running for mayor, but today her campaign is circulating petitions to run for Mayor next year. One principle has held true during Mendoza’s 17 years in public office - she has always put her own advancement first. Mendoza’s current deceptions and lies are obvious proof points to her continuation of putting her own self-service ahead of public service.” - Illinois Republican Party Executive Director Travis Sterling

She’s been a state representative under (Speaker of the House Michael Madigan) for 10 years, she was the city clerk of Chicago and now comptroller, so I’m looking at this as a situation where we’re really not rolling up our sleeves and getting the work we need to get done in the state of Illinois.”
* Republican Candidate for Illinois Comptroller visits Quincy: Senger said Mendoza seems to be more interested in running for Mayor of Chicago instead of running for re-election, commenting on a recent ad from her. “Really a different kind of ad at this phase in the campaign, it’s all about ‘I’m hard as nails’, she wears a shirt that looks like the flag of Chicago, so in appearance it looks like she’s trying to get her name out there running for mayor already,” said Senger.
* Illinois comptroller candidate: Susana Mendoza: Mendoza said she has not decided if she will run for mayor of Chicago. Current Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently annouced he would not run for re-election. Mendoza could win comptroller and still have time to file papers to run for mayor by the Nov. 26 deadline. The Chicago municipal election is Feb. 26.

I’d bet real money that if she wins, the democrats and JB pass a special bill allowing JB to pick her successor for Comptroller, and that person would get to finish the 4-year term.

I’m calling it now - if Mendoza gets elected Mayor, Pat Quinn runs for Comptroller in the 2020 special election, which will make him 6/6 in running for Statewide Office (7/7 if you include US Senator)

Hmm.
Mendoza has done an admirable job for Illinois, been a crusader in government where Rauner failed, and a bipartisan champion for good government, getting her agenda passes in the General Assembly by large bipartisan vote totals, veto-proof vote totals.
Darlene Senger wanted to blame the 14 deaths at the Quincy Home on a combat wounded veteran who was long gone from the agency.
So… there’s that.

When you run candidates like Darlene Senger, why should I take you seriously that you take the office of Comptroller seriously too?

Grand Avenue - He probably has a constitutional officer punch card for a free coffee somewhere. Everybody in!
Next steps: I think we’ll soon be seeing a major oppo dump on Toni to begin media speculation of more candidates jumping in to seriously challenge her. While she’s been in the public eye for so long, there has not been serious public attention on her management of the county.

I was there for a while and the main thing was the people passing Preckwinkle’s petitions. They were out in force and it was impressive.
Also was surprised to a a guy passing for Melissa Conyears-Ervin for city Treasurer against Kurt Summers. All she has to do is say she is running against “Rahm’s hand picked” person and that will be enough for many.
I didnt hang out for the whole thing, but I didnt see Mendoza clipboards. Susanna was there, of course. And as usual she spoke for waaaay too long. God Bless her but I cant see her as Mayor.

Downstate editorial boards may take their frustration out on Susana who won’t commit to the term as Comptroller. She’s asking for endorsements, but won’t commit to the job she’s seeking endorsements for. No wonder Illinois — in this case, Chicago — politics looks so sleazy.

I also think Mendoza’s soccer commercial is great. The first thing I noticed was she is wearing a shirt with the Chicago flag on it. Going to re-use that commercial down the road?

IL GOP should shift pretty much all their resources to this race imo. Only real shot they have at having something in state government for the next two years, but most likely, four. But probably too late at this point?

There were a ton of folks passing for Susana at the march (and passing for other candidates as well) and Toni’s people are bouncing off the walls because of it given the general arrogance of that team (starts at the top). They think she should get to walk right into the job. The city needs a new name at City Hall that’s not Daley and not an old-school Chicago Dem who’s been parading as a progressive for the past 40 years.

Toni’s people were “bouncing off the walls”. Not really.
Generally, the day was highlighted by people meeting and general “hey, havent seen you in a while” type activity.
“Phony progressive, “ etc etc etc. interesting. Im undecided but were I a strong supporter of one of the other candidates, I might point out Mendoza’s reliance on Daley, Burke, Madigan, over the years. Thats, um, hardly indicative of progressive tendancies, but whatever.

Good point Boone’s: If Toni Preckwinkle is the front-runner - and she’s on the Nov. 6 ballot for Cook County Board President, why is all the Faux Outrage about Nobody’s-ever-run-for-re-election-with-their-eye-on-another-office-before directed at Susana? Where are the posts and tweets savaging Toni? And if there are none, isn’t that a pretty good clue that all this Faux Outrage is coming from Toni’s camp?

25000 thousand plus signatures (pick your number) x whats the count now ? 17 = 425000. That has got to be 25% of the registered (if not more) that ARE signing a petition for Mayor. Calling all elections lawdawgs petition challenges pay well.

mendoza is no progressive. to the commenter who mentioned how quickly the petition signer jumped when given the opportunity to sign the petition for the person running against Rahm’s hand picked treasurer, expect this same treatment for mendoza. you cannot lay that same nonsense on toni. you can hit her with the berrios stuff, and the madigan stuff, but you cannot hit her with the Rahm stuff! Mendoza is no progressive!

Hard to imagine what other candidate could galvanize the women’s vote, bring in progressives, be a leader for Latinos, Latinas and Latinx, and get the support of the Catholics too.

I’m not convinced Mendoza gets more votes that Gary Chico. He didn’t do that bad last time. Regardless, whether it’s Toni or Susana..there’s something unsavory about running for 2 Offices. Hard to say who will emerge in a crowded field.
