  1. JB can play that at the Gubernatorial inauguration while Uncle Bruce is sipping wine in Italy.

Comment by The Real Captain Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:03 am

  2. Never go full Madigan

    “Dan-Dan, Daaaaaaaan”

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:07 am

  3. Ok, to “it”…

Are they mocking and trolling their own Madigan schtick?

If they are, it’s really funny to the moment.

    Gallows humor if you will.

I laughed. It was darkly funny.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:09 am

  4. Yeah it is entertaining.

So what are the odds now that his state taxes are out JB will answer the question, “How much do you feel you should have paid in state taxes”

Comment by OneMan Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:09 am

  5. extremely hilarious and entertaining.

Needs a 7 or 8 figure ad buy to help him, though. /ha

Comment by cdog Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:09 am

  6. Wait, what? JB is saying he won’t be in charge either?

    Dan dan daaaaa

It’s not gallows humor for Bruce, if it’s true that he’ll sip 100,000 wine in Italy should he lose. It’s gallows humor for the suckers in the private sector who don’t want to leave Illinois because it’s home.

Comment by Pick the Speaker? Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:15 am

  7. Below is still the best use of those three notes. Suitable for all.

  8. ===It’s gallows humor for the suckers in the private sector who don’t want to leave Illinois because it’s home.===

So Rauner’s Crew is mocking his own supporters, ‘cause if Rauner loses, they’re stuck with Pritzker?

If that’s the case, it’s not a very good angle to try to win, but… it made me laugh.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:19 am

  9. It’s cute. I laughed at the first reference. By the third it was already tiresome…like Rauner’s whole campaign.

    Comment by Anon0091 Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:21 am

  10. In a negotiation one side puts out it’s proposal and the other side details theirs. Why doesn’t someone ask the Speaker and Senate President what their tax proposals are?

It should be very easy because they are both in the same party and JB even has spending plans that require billions more in taxes every year.

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:25 am

  11. First four Madigans were funny, then it got old. Would actually make a pretty good 30 second ad.

    Comment by A Young Person Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:28 am

  12. Love it. He Can’t pick the rate, and he can’t pick the Speaker. Makes one wonder just how ineffectual JB would be as Gov.

Comment by Texas Red Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:36 am

  13. Madigan. Rinse. Repeat. Tiring.

Comment by Amalia Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:37 am

  14. Pick the Speaker? ===

Is that you, Bruce? No, no he doesn’t get to pick. Are you unclear on the concept of how the Speaker is elected? The Governor is only in charge of one branch of government, Bruce.

Sure, cute. But I was already saying “nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition” in my head after the second one. And not one vote will change.

Comment by Jibba Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:42 am

  15. Why doesn’t someone ask the Speaker and Senate President what their tax proposals are?

Funny how you left the other major party out of any proposal. JB has stated he will negotiate with the legislature.. Not just the 2 leaders.

Comment by Real Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:44 am

  16. ONe too many “Dan Dan Daaaaaaaa!” Otherwise it made me laugh.

Comment by ajjacksson Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:44 am

  17. Liked it. Funny. Curious why they included the clip of JB getting applause, especially near the end. If you’re going to use that clip it probably should come at the beginning with each succeeding clip without applause.

    Comment by 37B Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:46 am

  18. Just reminds me that Rauner has failed to accomplish anything, that he won’t be able to do anything going forward and he made it a war against Madigan. He lost the war. Arrivederci Bruce, ciao.

Comment by Trapped in the 'burbs Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:47 am

  19. Funny how you left the other party out of it?

Not as funny as how the Leaders in the legislature leave the other party out of negotiations.

I get it the only the they collaborate with Republicans on is raising taxes.

Unless they are voting on sham bills designed for campaign ads.

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 11:55 am

  20. –Madigan. Rinse. Repeat. Tiring.–

Maybe. But you can’t argue with its effectiveness.

Rauner has consistently been rocking an approval rating of about 26% and around 30% in the general election polls.

If you think about it, an incumbent GOP governor could probably have surpassed those numbers if they spent their entire term incommunicado on Mars.

You have to work it to earn those numbers.

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:00 pm

  21. I find it rather stupid. Why wouldn’t I want my governor to negotiate with the legislature to help make the state a better place? Rauner never even tried, so of course he hates the idea (except for working with Radogno then tossing her under the bus).

Comment by Steve Rogers Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:00 pm

  22. Probably the funniest ad I’ve seen yet from either side. Will it move the needle a little towards Rauner? Probably not, most of the voters already know that Madigan will be Speaker when Pritzker becomes Governor. They just want Rauner gone..period.

Comment by The Dude Abides Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:02 pm

  23. ==Not as funny as how the Leaders in the legislature leave the other party out of negotiations.

I get it the only the they collaborate with Republicans on is raising taxes.==

So what are we calling the attempted grand bargain and this years budget?

    Comment by Buck'n'Irish Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:03 pm

  24. ==Funny how you left the other party out of it?==

You really are forever a victim.

==how the Leaders in the legislature leave the other party out of negotiations.==

Ever heard of the Grand Bargain? You are just as dishonest as the Governor.

==collaborate with Republicans on is raising taxes.==

So you complain about them not collaborating and then you complain about them collaborating. You can’t even keep your arguments straight.

    You’re a joke.

Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:06 pm

  25. Ad was funny. Same old, same old though. Not really trying very hard to move the poll numbers.

Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:08 pm

  26. “Not as funny as how the Leaders in the legislature leave the other party out of negotiations.”

LP - Are you talking about what the GOP in Washington like Pete Roskam did on their “Make the Rich Richer” tax cut bill?

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:10 pm

  27. Perhaps Pritzker knows something that Rauner hasn’t learned even after four years.
Is Rauner suggesting that Pritzker simply lay down the gauntlet because that approach worked so well for him?

Comment by Truthteller Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:15 pm

  28. Embarrassingly lame, even for a crew that’s losing by 15 points or whatever.

Comment by Rusty Bridges Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:16 pm

  29. The Governor does commercials well. What he doesn’t do well is govern. Even a Republican poll that came out today showed him down 13 points. His misfortune is that it is a referendum on him and most Illinoisans have already decided they don’t want him back.

Comment by Maestro Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:24 pm

  30. It’s ironic that Pritzker won’t give specific numbers. Rauner was vague on his promises in 2014. I guess Rauner believes in “Do I as I say, not as I do.”http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-gubernatorial-forum-zorn-0910-20140909-column.html

Comment by Hottot Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:30 pm

  31. Was BTIA watchin’ a “Family Guy” episode when they dreamed this one up. Like some of the bits on that show, this one was about 3 segments too long.

    Comment by Anon221 Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:36 pm

  32. No matter what side you’re on lean back, take off the over-serious hat and let yourself laugh at the caricatures that have marked this election. Appreciate the art. This is a great political ad for the final stages of the campaign. Whoever dreamed it up and executed it should get a raise. Grade A.

Comment by Responsa Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:39 pm

  33. Mr/Ms LP
were you in a comma in ‘17. First there was the Grand Bargain that GovJunk and NoTaxBill torpedoed, then bipartisan budget deal which GovJunk failed to veto. That is about as specific a plan as one needs

Comment by Annonin' Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:46 pm

  34. Forgot to mention cameo by the late Paul Green tried but did not save spot. Good to see Paul laughin’ at GovJunk too.

Comment by Annonin' Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:51 pm

  35. Rauner probably tosses and turns all night as that commercial is what seems to be actually been swirling through his head the past 4 years.

Comment by DeseDemDose Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:55 pm

  36. How does JB and negotiations with the legislature overcome Article IX, Section 3(a) of our state constitution which states “A tax on or measured by income shall be at a
    non-graduated rate.”

Comment by Details Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:56 pm

  37. Overplaying the boogieman makes him boring, not scary.

Comment by Ed Higher Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 12:56 pm

  38. I was not in a comma

Mike Madigan did not support the Grand Bargain in any form, no matter how watered down and shot full of holes it became.

Of course the failure to pass has nothing to do with the most powerful Democrat in Illinois being opposed

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 1:01 pm

  39. –How does JB and negotiations with the legislature overcome Article IX, Section 3(a) of our state constitution which states “A tax on or measured by income shall be at a
    non-graduated rate.”–

A proposed constitutional amendment, which also would have to be negotiated with the GA to get on the ballot.

Comment by Ron Burgundy Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 1:14 pm

  40. ==Of course the failure to pass has nothing to do with the most powerful Democrat in Illinois being opposed==

The Governor killed it all by himself. You’re tired bot talking points don’t work here.
The Governor killing the grant bargain is a fact that is not in dispute.

Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 1:38 pm

  41. ===Mike Madigan did not support the Grand Bargain in any form, no matter how watered down and shot full of holes it became.===

    For the 9,583rd time…

Rauner torpedoed the Grand Bargain before it got to the House… It was Rauner who torpedoed Leader Radogno.

You know this. We constantly are reminding you.

Your spamming of untruthful comments is tiring.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 1:41 pm

  42. ==For the 9,583rd time…==

Are you sure that number isn’t higher?

Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 1:45 pm

  43. When the “Blame Madigan” strategy fails again, will the Illinois Republicans finally decide to try something new to give voters a reason to vote for them, or are we stuck with this lame, tired, ineffective strategy for the duration?

The ad is cute. I’ll concede that much. The strategy is a proven loser. What’s the definition of insanity? Try the same thing over and over and expect a different result? I think we know what the result is going to be. Again.

    Comment by 47th Ward Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 1:46 pm

  44. ===Are you sure that number isn’t higher?===

Probably, but we’re probably on our 3rd or 4th “Lucky Pierre” so it resets when the comments change from programming, as a new “LP” is rolled out.

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 1:48 pm

  45. That is what you guys say day after day. Blame Rauner nothing is ever Madigan’s fault.

Apparently, Mike Madigan has had no role in the dysfunction of the state or the refusal to pass popular bipartisan reforms, be it pensions, term limits, redistricting, workers comp, grand bargains etc.

He has been highly successful passing record tax increases and getting reelected since the 1970’s for kicking the can down the road.

Comment by Lucky Pierre Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 1:49 pm

  46. ===Blame Rauner nothing is ever Madigan’s fault===

When you locate that red herring in the wild, make sure to tell us.

Comment by Rich Miller Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 1:50 pm

  47. ===When the “Blame Madigan” strategy fails again, will the Illinois Republicans finally decide to try something new to give voters a reason to vote for them, or are we stuck with this lame, tired, ineffective strategy for the duration?==

My fear is if Rauner goes down, all the statewide go Dem, the Senate stays veto-proof, and the House goes 71 without Drury, Franks, AND Dunkin… I’d see a chance for a rebirth of a “Raunerless” GOP…

… and we could retire “Fire Madigan” as the total collapse of Raunerism would implode his brand of the ILGOP.

“I hope” - Red, in “Shawshank Redemption”

    We’ll see.

If it goes Ives/Uihlein/Proft instead of trying for Maureen Murphys and Mark Beaubiens… I’ll be again wondering aloud why no one learned anything… but no one is asking me…

Comment by Oswego Willy Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 1:54 pm

  48. –This is a great political ad for the final stages of the campaign. Whoever dreamed it up and executed it should get a raise. Grade A.–

Only if you believe humor in a negative spot moves persuadables to go against the other guy.

I think history shows anger is a better motivator.

If you’re just looking to amuse yourself, it’s great. But that’s why it’s a :50 and not on TV.

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 1:56 pm

  49. ==Blame Rauner== please see 1) Radogno’s retirement statement; 2) Jeanne Ives comments and better yet 3) Rep Peter Breen’s statement

“Lucky Pierre” must have been in Pierre, South Dakota until brought in for the campaign.

Comment by low level Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 2:04 pm

  50. ==Blame Rauner nothing is ever Madigan’s fault.==

There you go being a victim again. Nobody is doing that. What we’re doing is fighting against your absurd daily claims that the Governor is simply an innocent bystander in all of this who bears no responsibility for anything. It’s been his gig for the last 4 years. He shares the blame during that time period no matter what your bot programming tells you. Try and argue like an adult just once.

Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 2:05 pm

  51. By the way LP, you care to address your l i e about who killed the Grand Bargain?

Comment by Demoralized Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 2:07 pm

  52. I think TDA 12:02’s last sentence sums up the public’s sentiment neatly. Well done.

Comment by Original Rambler Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 2:07 pm

  53. @Wordslinger, LOL. and nice Sun Times mention. The husband stood over me as I read it so he could hear my reaction. Even he, who does not read this blog, knows who Wordslinger is.

Comment by Amalia Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 2:10 pm

  54. If Rauner loses and Uiehlein fills the money vacuum, I suspect he’ll send Proft after what he considers apostate Republicans rather than go after Madigan.

His MO has been more about “purifying” the GOP in primaries than building majorities capable of governing.

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 2:21 pm

  55. Ironically, Rauner clearly didn’t know how to negotiate anything with the legislature or Speaker Madigan. It was Rauner’s way or the highway. So hit the road, Bruce, and don’t you come back no more, no more, no more, no more.

Comment by Christopher Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 3:17 pm

  56. –That is what you guys say day after day.–

And what you, the other Bots, BTIA(TM) and Rauner say day-after-day has earned you a whopping 28% in the polls.

    Keep up the good work.

Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 4:26 pm

  57. ==Ironically, Rauner clearly didn’t know how to negotiate anything with the legislature or Speaker Madigan.==

Or House and Senate GOP caucuses. See HB40.

Comment by Anonymous Tuesday, Oct 16, 18 @ 4:59 pm

  58. Good for a couple of laughs, but then :crickets:
Demonizing Madigan hasn’t worked yet, and JB is right not to state a magic number/numbers for his tax plan.
Oh, as to the Dan Daa Daaaa!…
