Yesterday, Governor Bruce Rauner once again sought to deflect blame for his handling of the Legionnaires’ outbreak in Quincy, calling questions about how quickly his administration acted “false political spin for political gain.” Appearing on WMBD, Rauner claimed his administration “immediately” acted – “There was no delay. There was no waiting.”
In truth, WBEZ uncovered an email from Rauner’s office ordering the state’s veterans and health departments to withhold information about the outbreak. As reported, the children of Tim Miller and Gerald Kuhn both said they would have made different health choices if they were informed earlier. Melvin Tucker was reportedly only given Tylenol for his fever for days, despite confirmed reports of Legionnaires’.
While Rauner claims “political spin,” he eventually signed legislation requiring 24-hour notification of future outbreaks and his own administration cited itself for failing to tell staff in a timely manner.
“Bruce Rauner is moving from covering-up his administration’s fatal mismanagement at Quincy to shamelessly dismissing legitimate questions as ‘false political spin,’” said DPI Statewide Communications Director Sam Salustro. “The fact is, families of the 14 deceased residents aren’t playing politics, they’re sharing heartbreaking stories and holding the governor who failed them accountable.”

McKinney and Arnold, they’ve done yeomen’s work. Rich, here, has kept the facts visible for those looking too.
Rauner’s fantasy to negate the honesty is what Raunerism is all about, and 14 people lost their lives, and Rauner sees his role without looking at the facts.

Has this issue been used for political gain? Absolutely. But spin? Facts are facts and the timeline shows Rauner is the one trying to spin this.

Rauner has gone from blinders to full on blindfold, and he wants the rest of us to wear one too. If he thinks his spin will change the facts of discovery in the lawsuits the families have filed, he is greatly mistaken.

I saw this interview live and it made me ill. The full on lies and the reporter never once challenged him.

Repeatedly telling a lie that has been thoroughly debunked, does not make it the truth. Your failure to promptly inform the families of the Quincy VA home and staff has been reported numerous times.
Whether you believe it or not, a lie is still a lie, no matter how many time you tell it.

To campaigning *in* Quincy today or… yeah, that’s a bit of a head scratcher.

I would disagree with OW on the debate anywhere, anytime. The narrative of the Quincy debate was predetermined by geography. There was no way to win or even tie. Bad move by his team to agree to that debate.

Pritzker chose the Quincy debate to be one of the “three” he was going to do.
Rauner not showing up at all, that would’ve been worse.
It’s fascinating, you have a candidate down solid double digits, and thinking that candidate has choices in debates and locations.

14 people died. It’s been proven there was a cover-up. People that were in charge need to be held responsible. How were there not criminal charges filed?

Ow-there are always choices and the debate would have never happened if they didn’t agree. Having a debate about debates is preferable to going into a losing situation.

There was nothing to debate. What leverage did Rauner have?
Pritzker was doing 3, one was going to be in Quincy.
Rauner doesn’t show, in Quincy, Pritzker coulda had a whole hour to hammer away, in Quincy, about the Veterans Home.
Rauner needed debates. Rauner has been down double digits. That’s why Rauner was there.
Pritzker held all the leverage, as front-runners do.
That’s how it me been since… forever.

It works with Trump supporters. And Trump lost Illinois by a wide margin. And even if it works with Rauner supporters that group hovers +/- at 30%.
Telling the truth isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s an act of humility. By refusing to acknowledge irrefutable facts Rauner reinforces the much broader narrative that he can’t be believed on anything.

Oswego, you are exactly right on Quincy debate formula.
Rauner hasbeen in Quincy five times since since he found out he was winning the county 51 to 49. His margin traditionally should be 68 to 32. 5 trips trying to build what should be his base. Sad
