Next Post: Brown: “Rauner’s latest TV ad suggests he knows he’s f*****”

From “unholy union” to “the corruption couple” to a sex columnist

Posted in:

* Everybody was yakking yesterday about Gov. Rauner’s new “Unholy union” ad featuring a wedding ceremony between Speaker Madigan and JB Pritzker. This is a screen capture from US Rep. Peter Roskam’s new ad slamming his opponent Sean Casten…

Everybody’s getting into the act.

* And check this out. A buddy took this with his phone. The Roskam ad ran immediately after the Rauner ad this morning

* Meanwhile

Beyond President Donald Trump and almost every issue they were asked about, Republican U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam and Democratic challenger Sean Casten during their latest debate also clashed over a sex columnist.

In Monday night’s WTTW forum, Roskam referenced a recent Wall Street Journal story in which Casten cites sex columnist Dan Savage when asked to name a leader who inspires him.

“He bound himself to some people who were advocating political blackmail and political slander,” Roskam said of Casten during Monday’s debate. “And I think he should distance himself from these people.”

Casten didn’t back away from the comments.

“The person I embraced … is Dan Savage, who has been a voice for the LGBT community and particularly for the It Gets Better Project of teens who were considering suicide,” Casten said. “Mr. Roskam has been a horrible advocate for that community, and maybe he doesn’t like that I support them, but I do.”

We’re at peak something right now. I just don’t know what it is.

  1. I think Casten explained why he was inspired by Dan Savage quite well. Roskam is going for the hysterics.

Maybe a new low point for modern times.

But we haven’t reached 1800’s depths yet.

  4. How about “peak awful,” which is exactly how these ads and this atmosphere make me feel.

  5. You’d think since the Santorum thing the GOP would avoid anything at all to do with Dan Savage like the plague.

Comment by Shark Sandwich Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 9:32 am

  6. I’m trying to keep my scorecard straight: we now know that Madigan is a bigamist (at least), being married to Shirley and Pritzker.

Did he marry Casten, too, making him a polygamist? Or are they just stepping out together on the down-low as a “corruption couple?”

Who knew the little fella had it in him? What’s his favorite kind of apple, again?

  7. I think the rabid nature and lack of facts in the gop ads I have seen lately should make the moderate/ independent republican embarrassed to vote for those candidates.

    It is sad

1800 election did not have social media pumping ads to the masses. As the founders all agreed upon, this new government requires an educated electorate

Comment by Publius Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 9:34 am

  8. We’ve seen the President of the United States take rhetoric down the despicable path and it worked for him. Others are trying to mimic those disgusting displays to see if it works for them too. Unfortunately Rauner is in Illinois. A good majority of Illinois voters despise the President. That sort of nonsense won’t work here.

  9. ==”As the founders all agreed upon, this new government requires an educated electorate“== (emphasis added)

    Rauner’s right: we’re F’ed.

  10. “We’re at peak something right now.”

I wish I could believe that this has crested. Like mad generals with new weapons, it seems like campaigns have discovered some new toys with which they’ve only begun playing.

  11. It’s extremely revealing that Roskam, after a decade in DC and authoring the tax giveaway to the wealthiest, is running Madigan ads and talking about Dan Savage.

The GOP agenda is so unpopular, they’ll do anything to change the subject, no matter how ridiculous or far fetched.

  12. Rich, we may well be at the peak of something, but it sure feels like we’re wallowing in something that runs downhill

Comment by Flapdoodle Wednesday, Oct 24, 18 @ 10:00 am

  13. The ability of trump to get away w/ nothing but lies and fear and dog whistles is the only thing that is trickling down. Once something works, every campaign consultant copies it and the race to the bottom is on.

  14. I think Friedman said it best regarding what to do about reaching this point in politics:

“One day I hope the truth will be enough again. One day I hope great journalism will be enough again. But today only a lever of power — the House or the Senate — will make it so. Facts, science and truth — without power — are just leaves floating through the air in the age of Trump, scattering aimlessly without impact.

So, this year: No third party, no Green Party, no throwing up our hands and saying, “They’re all bad.” All of that’s for another day. For today, in these midterm elections, vote for a Democrat, canvass for a Democrat, raise money for a Democrat, drive someone else to a voting station to vote for a Democrat. It’s the only hope to make America America again.

Nothing else matters. Pass it on.”

I don’t know about that, it sure seems like we are getting there. Robber barons using their money to get all the benefits, bought and paid for press, saying absolutely anything that comes to mind.

    Seems like the 19th century.

Casten did a great job by the way.

  19. Peak disrespect for an opposing opinion or political viewpoint.
