I have never worked in the County Clerk office, but my understanding is that votes are not tallied until Nov. 6 even for the early ballots. Certainly no indication of results are released. Did anyone vet this with the State Board of Elections? Puzzled at how anyone would know this to be a fact??

The optical scan ballots usually signal overvotes when you feed it to the machine. I’m assuming they are using optical scan.
Also, if you have a choice–use the optical scan ballots–they are the most reliable and have the fewest undervotes compared to other systems meaning they are the most accurate form of voting technology currently used.

What does “attempted to vote for more than one” mean? They voted twice or they spoiled their ballots by voting for two candidates in the same race which functionally means they didn’t vote for that race at all?

This is interesting. I agree with Puzzled’s puzzlement. Also, as an election judge I know that when voting in person (whether early or on election day) the optical scanner dings an overvote or undervote, and the voter has immediate opportunity to void the ballot and/or fix it. If these are absentees or vote by mail that are being fed into the ballot box at the county clerk’s office do they just count as spoiled ballots? Need more info.

There are no obvious problems I see–I’m not an expert on design, but the basics seem to be there. I’m wondering if the reporter is taking something said too literally?

Primary elections often show you how disconnected some people are from the political process.
First you have people who get indignant that they have to declare which party’s ballot they want to take.
Then you get the people who get mad that they can’t vote for candidates in both parties.

We should all be allowed to do this - it’s called approval voting. That’s literally what it is - allowing you to vote for as many candidates as you want, and the candidate with the most votes wins.

It would give third party and independent candidates a fair chance.

Over and under voting is very common. Some people do it accidentally and others do it on purpose. The election authority is required to notify the person of an over or under vote and give them an opportunity to vote a new ballot or keep their ballot as is.

They’re not.
The machines are rejecting ballots with over-votes — those with more than one candidate marked in a single race — and allowing the voters the option of correcting their mistake.
Ballots are rejected for over-votes BEFORE they are tallied.

But over-votes cannot be “corrected” if the ballots are mailed in and the voter is not physically present to make the correction. So a double vote for governor in that case would be rejected and I believe would result in no vote for governor for that voter.
