AFSCME mailer pairs Rauner with Harold

Posted in:

* A buddy of mine sent me this AFSCME mailer last night and wondered aloud why the Raoul campaign didn’t use this image of Rauner with Erika Harold. I didn’t have an answer…

  1. In many ways, the Raoul campaign is the 2016 Mendoza campaign, but with added negligence.

Silly lil missing pieces. Missing easy avenues. Focusing on things that might not drive voters as intensely.

  2. May the Raoul campaign doesn’t want to put Harold in a picture with the candidate who backs taxpayer abortion funding.

  3. I have been rather surprised at the quietness of the Raoul campaign. He isn’t well known downstate, but he hasn’t really been trying to get his name out there. Neither has he been capitalizing on some of his bipartisan successes. I would expect that his work in concealed carry would have played well downstate.

  4. “Earlier, Harold had criticized Madigan’s decision to join other Democratic attorneys general in defending a lawsuit brought in Texas by Republican attorneys general against the Affordable Care Act.”
This statement negates the claim she is for coverage for pre-existing conditions. The GOPie AG law suit ENDS that benefit.
We expect the IL GOPie AG candidate will hop into this suit ASAP if elected. Perhaps this is the strongest reason to turn her away.

  5. “…who will work against working families”

    AFSCME’s thesaurus needs more work.

  6. @CityZen: That’s just basic messaging. If it works, keep saying it. Change it only if it doesn’t work.

  7. The problem with candidates like Raoul who got appointed to office and never faced a real challenge before moving up is they oddly lack campaign experience. Sure, he won the primary - but he was effectively appointed as the establishment candidate. He’s never won in his own. Harold faced a lot of opposition when she ran for Congress in 2014, had to do it almost all by herself - her father was her campaign manager, which is endearing but reflected her lack of institutional support. She lost that race, but is a better candidate this time as a result of that experience.

  8. If he loses, he only has him and his staff to blame. Very quiet campaign. No fire.

  9. If there will be a surprise one week from today, it will be how did Erika Harold win. If she wins, this will be campaign malpractice. I hope the Raoul team wakes up. #StayWoke #Please

  10. From a downstate reporter: It’s bizarre how little effort Raoul has put in here, especially given how often we’ve seen Harold and Pritzker. I thought that reflected a laser focus on Chicago and the collars, but it might just be a bad campaign.

  11. ===…but it might just be a bad campaign.===

    They seem lazy to task.

Mendoza was a firecracker in 2016 while her campaign crew floundered.

    Raoul isn’t Mendoza.

  12. I watched the two candidates on the “Chicago Tonight” broadcast last night. I was shocked at how poorly Raoul came across. When pitched a softball by Carol Marin, he ducked and weaved by saying that he would need to review the AG office operations upon taking office before he could commit to announcing his priorities. What?

Comment by Practical Politics Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 12:49 pm

  13. Speaking of campaign malpractice, if the AG race is as close as the Harold campaign says it is, why hasn’t she gotten any help from the Republican Attorneys General Association? I see, thanks to a J.B. contribution, that the Dem counterpart is weighing in vs. Harold.

  14. Kwame will win big. He doesn’t have the staff caliber that JB’s team does because he doesn’t have the money. He doesn’t travel as extensively downstate because I assume they have targeted the Chicago area and collar counties to win. You go where the votes are and not many Democrats live South of Springfield.

Huh? Raul is as strongly anti-gun as JB. Every gun group in Illinois is backing Harold.

  16. I don’t know why Raoul didn’t use this pic. But there again this was for AFSCMEs, specifically Southern AFSCMEs.
If you showed Jesus himself holding Rauners hand running for savior, 100% of afscme’s would vote against Christ.
Very effective mailer to me. I reflexively spit on my computer screen. Afscme’s are the “gettable” votes down here.
But besides the endorsing delegates very few know Raoul.
So they sent us this mailer.

  17. If Kwame wins, it wont be because of downstate voters. They know nothing of him. I ahould say, we know nothing of him. Voters down here only hear of Madigan, Rauner, Prtizker, and Madigans daughter. Kwame should have made a better effort down here.

Comment by Generic Drone Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 4:03 pm

  18. Doesn’t do much. We all know Harold is Republican and no suprise, Rauner has supported her. But she isn’t Rauner and the job is different. I’m voting for her.
