Rauner blames Trump’s late arrival for lack of facetime

Posted in:

* Sun-Times

Gov. Bruce Rauner wasted his time riding his Harley to President Donald Trump’s rally in southern Illinois last weekend.

That’s the opinion of state Rep. Jeanne Ives, the conservative firebrand who gave the embattled governor a run for his money in the March primary.

“I don’t see that he got anything out of it,” Ives said of Rauner’s weekend road trip during a pre-election show at the Sun-Times on Monday. […]

“Quite frankly. He went down there. He would have been better of doing his own thing, separate from the Trump event because he was basically not even recognized at the Trump event,” Ives said. “So I think it hurts him more than it helps him.”

* The governor explained to ABC 7 why he didn’t meet with Trump. You should really watch the video, but here’s the online version

Rauner is hoping to rally more support from voters than he did from the president Saturday at Trump’s rally in southern Illinois, where the governor appeared to get snubbed.

“He was an hour late, he had to get right on the stage and I spend my time before he got there really thanking all our volunteers,” Rauner said.

Pritzker called it a desperate move.

“Remember Bruce Rauner has been flip-flopping all along, first he doesn’t want to say Donald Trump’s name, now he wants to get on stage with Donald Trump but can’t even get that done,” Pritzker said.

* CBS 2

Rauner said he wasn’t embarrassed about President Trump’s failure to address him in the crowd at the rally in Murphysboro, Ill.

“He’s travelled in many states and doesn’t call out every elected official,” Rauner said.

Just saying, but the president managed to name-check the Republican candidate for California governor at that event.

* Other stuff…

* ABATE rescinds Rauner endorsement over autonomous vehicles: The decision was made even though Rauner is an avid motorcyclist and was seen wearing an ABATE sweatshirt Saturday when President Donald Trump campaigned for Republican congressional candidates in southern Illinois.

* Motorcycle Group Pulls Rauner Endorsement: He launched his reelection campaign with a video that featured him riding a Harley. And this weekend, he showed up to President Trump’s southern Illinois rally wearing an ABATE sweatshirt.

* Motorcycle-advocacy group ABATE pulls support for Gov. Bruce Rauner over autonomous vehicles order: Back in August, Gov. Bruce Rauner used social media to tout receiving the endorsement of the political arm of the motorcycle-advocacy group ABATE (A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education) and was lauded by the group’s chairman for “including the motorcycle community in relevant discussions.” But on Monday, the group posted on its Facebook site that it had yanked its backing for the motorcycle-riding GOP governor who most recently sported his cycle vest at President Donald Trump’s rally in Murphysboro last weekend.

    “With handshakes all around, he at last climbed on his iron horse to move on down the road.
    The Governor, dressed in black leather riding gear, headed for Murphysboro on a large, throbbing jet black motorcycle. He left Olney to cheers and undoubtedly heads for more at his next stop ‘on the trail’. ”

  6. Trump acknowledging Rauner would be like Amazon acknowledging Sears.

  7. Rauner is lucky that Trump didn’t unload on him for that ridiculous costume he was wearing. Very lucky.

    Comment by wordslinger Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 11:29 am

  8. ===A blessing in disguise.===

    It’s better to be seen trying to pander to Trump and be completely rebuffed, a signal to Trunpkins that Rauner needs, versus a picture with Trump, maybe get some Trunpkins fooled, and have Pritzker help link Rauner to Trump, and thus helping Rauner get an artificial bump.

    It wasn’t a blessing, it was a 6+ hour waste, looking foolish, getting nothing tangible for that trip.

  9. You would think Rauner and Trump would be best friends. Both are wealthy elitist who pretend to be working class, enrich themselves at the expense of others, and can’t accept blame for there actions. A match made in heaven

  10. That’s a good point about Trump having really nice words on the stage for John Cox, who was several states away, while completely ignoring Rauner, who was kinda sorta there for the Trump rally, just not the part with Trump. Good times.

    Comment by Chris P. Bacon Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 11:34 am

  11. I wonder if Trump knows Rauner ran from him, and that he fully expanded Medicaid abortions and legalized sanctuary cities. Rauner came to the rally looking like a sideshow clown, like a total pandering phony. Trump ought to know.

    It’s super cool. Totally not embarrassed. Completely on message. Ready to win.

  13. With Trump and Rauner it’s always darned if he does, darned if he doesn’t. I would argue there’s more of an electoral price to pay by aggressively pandering to him. It’s a difficult line to walk, either way.

    Not true. He stopped outside and spoke to the overflow crowd becore going inside and on stage.

    Comment by SOIL M Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 11:42 am

  17. It is interesting that the Governor would head down there without a definite plan to meet Mr. Trump.

    It sure looks like a snub, and plays into what Ives has said about the Governor.

    Note that political miscalculations have been common with the the Governor. In 20 years people will look back and realize that Rauner won four years ago only because his name wasn’t Quinn. Rauner did it despite very poor political skills.

  27. My God, Rauner has transitioned into Trump-style gaslighting.

    The idea that Trump wouldn’t acknowledge the governor of the fifth most populous state in our union is absurd.

  28. They showed a couple snippets of Trump’s IL speech last night on Colbert. And there on the lower left hand corner of my screen this guy stood out. While everyone else had a red hat on, his was blue. He was also wearing a patch filled vest. The expression on his face, though, said it all: “Why am I here?”

    Rauner’s predicament was a purposeful slight by Trumpies or a massive fail by Rauner staff. One more week of Rauner failure and he can start planning for Italy.

  32. ===The idea that Trump wouldn’t acknowledge the governor of the fifth most populous state in our union is absurd.===

    The refusal of the Republican governor of the fifth most populous state to even say the name of the Republican president of the United States also is absurd. Trump’s thin-skinned vindictiveness is appalling, but I have to admit, Rauner got exactly what was coming to him.

  35. Really? Has any politician on the stump arrived on time? Typically, add an hour or more to the arrival time. It is always someone else’s fault according to the governor.

    Comment by Nearly Normal Tuesday, Oct 30, 18 @ 12:56 pm

  36. The Trump “snub” was so predictable. The President lured Romney to a fancy restaurant at one of his properties in Manhattan, got him to beg to be Secretary of State, and then hung Romney out to dry. That’s what Trump thinks of private equity politicos like Romney and Rauner.

    It could have been so much worse. Trump could have held him up for scorn and ridicule. He’s been known to do that.

  44. I think one reason Trump doesn’t respect Rauner is because Rauner never came up with a cutesy nickname for his arch nemesis Mike Madigan.

  46. Seems to me like Rauner was a late arriver to Trump. Maybe two years too late.

    Rauner’s problem is he was never willing to take a position regarding the President and in the process of doing so he managed to alienate voters on both sides of the equation.
