DAGA up with TV ad attacking Harold on abortion

Posted in:

* The Democratic Attorneys General Association has put $864,500 behind this TV ad

* Script…

Announcer: Republican Erika Harold wants to be attorney general, and she says…

Harold: It’s no secret that I’m pro-life.

Announcer: But did you know this?

WCIA TV’s Mark Maxwell: You mentioned that even in cases of rape and incest, most Republicans carve those out, but that you were still opposed to abortion. Have your views at all evolved or changed on that?

Harold: My views are clear.

Announcer: That’s right. Erika Harold is for outlawing abortion, even in cases of rape and incest. Erika Harold, she’s too extreme for Illinois.

  1. AG’s enforce the law, they do not make it nor interpret it.

  2. Taxedoutwest

Considering the current administration and the way the Supreme Court is being put together, it is essential to have an AG who believes in a woman’s right to choose.

  3. @Taxedoutwest It was Lisa Madigan who defended HB40 in court when Peter Breen brought a lawsuit. Try again.

And that’s why it doesn’t matter who’s Attorney General, rite?

  5. === AG’s enforce the law, they do not make it nor interpret it. ===

Do they? AG’s have been acting more politically over the last several years. Suing to overturn action put in place by the other party. Given this trend, health and abortion are legitimate issues now.

Comment by Norseman Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 3:09 pm

  6. @taxedoutwest
How many GOP AG’s are enforcing the ACA as opposed to interpreting it and trying to abolish it through the federal courts? your naïve bromide does not reflect the job as performed by AG’s of both parties. In sum, elections have consequences, even when your electing your attorney.

  7. She like many Illinoisans is personally pro-life, to use the language of ” outlawing abortion” is fear-mongering. Looking over her campaign website there is noting about abortion.

I don’t see much on Raoul’s website about Madigan

Even silly talking points should have some basis in reality and history.

  11. The fact we have a DAGA and a RAGA shows how the attorney generals are now (also) more involved politically. A sad future we are moving towards when the attorney general is going to decide what laws to enforce depending on which way they lean.

  12. If you haven’t seen Last Week Tonight on Sunday, make sure to watch it. It’s about attorneys general, and it’s excellent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpdMYOtAmKY

Harold and Raoul aren’t mentioned but it gives a great summary of the growing political partisanship of AGs across the country.

Comment by Steve Rogers Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 3:42 pm

  13. It appears to be very dishonest ad due to the choppy editing and how the narrator puts words that she obviously does not say, in her mouth.

I don’t believe the ad one bit.

Comment by VanillaMan Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 3:46 pm

  14. That’s a decent sized ad buy. Stating the obvious but the more suburban women that see that ad, the more likely Harold loses.

Comment by AlfondoGonz Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 3:48 pm

  16. VanillaMan, I don’t think there’s any dispute as to what Harold’s position on abortion is, including with respect to cases of rape and incest.

She may not want to highlight it in a state as blue as Illinois, but that’s been her position for a while. Please correct me if I have that wrong.

  17. –I don’t believe the ad one bit.–

What, specifically, don’t you believe about it?

–She (Harold) also said she is pro-life and would have voted for a bill to ban abortion after 20 weeks. She said saving the life of the mother is the only exception to abortion she favors, and she does not think abortion should be legal in cases of rape or incest. In any case other than when the mother’s life is threatened, she said, “I would not discriminate (against the fetus) based on the circumstance of conception.”–

  18. Do these anti-choice types ever promise to adopt the kids who are the products of rape and incest? Or would they force the bio moms to do it?

Comment by Anonymous Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 3:53 pm

  19. AG can also sit on their hands. And try to stop healthcare that pays for women’s choices. Erika, no.

Comment by Amalia Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 4:11 pm

  20. Surprise of election night could be Harold squeaking by. I wouldn’t bet on it, but she’ll outperform Rauner in the burbs and if McCann brings out more R’s that would have otherwise stayed home it could happen.

Comment by TopHatMonocle Thursday, Nov 1, 18 @ 4:47 pm

  21. Top Hat it is not going to happen. The media want a close race since JB is walking away with the Governor’s race. This is a blue state. Kwame is kicking it hard and has been.

    Nonsense.

Do you think her views “aren’t clear,” when she says they “are clear?”

I provided the link where she stated her views clearly, and that’s what the spot is referring to.

    It’s badly done.
You can’t edit quick comments out of context, give the narrator the right to frame, judge and condemn the edited comments, use contents obviously taken years apart, and pass it off.

    It’s a bad ad.
Because it’s a bad ad, I’m not able to believe what it claims.

So if she says something about abortion in an interview, we should ignore it because she didn’t want to put it on her campaign website?
