Early youth voting in Illinois is up 144 percent over the 2014 midterms. More than 70 percent of the 6,200 undergraduates at the University of Chicago registered to vote through the TurboVote app. At the university’s early voting site, students waited up to an hour to cast their ballots.
Keep in mind that early voting has become far more common in recent years. But it still does probably show voter intensity.

““The big question: Is all this surge in early voting, is it just just to get it out of the way? Or has it more to do with a bigger turnout?” Orr said during a news conference with city officials Monday. “The buzz clearly is we’re going to have a bigger turnout. We see so many signs, but they’re not necessarily provable at this point. We’ll see that tomorrow.
“It’s hard for us to say, but we clearly, I believe, will break the normal 49 to 52 (percent turnout),” he said.
Marisel Hernandez, chairwoman of the election board that supervises Chicago voting, was a bit more cautious in her turnout estimate.
“I don’t know if you can have an educated guess, but we definitely will see over 50 percent, but as far as anything more specific than that, I’m hesitant to say,” Hernandez said. “We think that this election has generated a lot of interest, so we’re hoping for a good turnout.”

This is great news. The young people can now also have unclean hands for voting in more tax and spend legislators to the GA in Springfield. Now they too are responsible for bankrupting our state and stripping the equity out of their homes by driving up their property taxes. So much unity.

Thank goodness the yutes are voting. My nieces are in graduate and professional school and were going to pass because they did not know the candidates or issues. It only took a little persuading from their “crazy” Uncle to convince them to vote. It is their future.

Also polling upstairs? Is that ADA compliant? There should be provisions for handicapped or seniors to go to head of line and yes I realize it is college voting

I’m 29 & have voted since I was 19. First federal election was same-day registration in Minnesota during college and the last election line I stood in was in 2015. Every election I pull the vote-by-mail ballot. Will County does a fantastic job of vbm; I get the ballot, crack open a beer and research the candidates positions. My parents waited 1.5 hours in line and I simply asked them why they didn’t vote by mail. Guess some people just want their “I voted” sticker.

Awesome to see more young people vote.
And please, conservatives/GOP/right wingers are in no position to judge anyone on fiscal responsibility, with Rauner exploding debt and deficit, and with the national GOP doing something like that with trillion-dollar tax cuts for those who need it the least. How does anyone believe anymore that Republicans are the party of fiscal responsibility?

What most don’t realize if you aren’t on a campus, A Guy, is that those backpacks stink. The students virtually never wash them and take them everywhere during the week. We had a testing center in a former job I was in and they left their backpacks in the office for the longest time and it was awful.

In 1972, Dennis Bing, the Champaign County Clerk, had to be sued so students could vote after Bing said you needed to have proof of a burial plot in Champaign County in order to register to vote. We won the lawsuit. Good to see this generation of students taking their their citizenship & futures seriously.

The most disappointing aspect for the GOP these dozen years and longer is alienating young voters, ignoring young voters, then disenfranchising young voters.
That… and to minorities, and to women, and to moderates….
That picture is a symbol… of how far the GOP is to go to be an inclusive party.

Let’s hope many of them are voting Dem to the bottom of the ballot, to replace Hulten (who’s running for a promotion to County Executive) with Aaron Ammons, who I assume is actually in favor of making it easier to vote.

Genuinely hope all the students pictured standing in line to vote who registered via the Turbo vote app understand that they can’t also vote at their home (parents’ address) precinct either in-state or out of state. There are checks and balances to prevent/catch this but usually after the fact when the students are shocked to find themselves in legal trouble for double voting.

Rep. Ammons forgot to mention her husband is running to replace Gordy Hulten as County Clerk (Hulten is running for County Executive-new position.) That campaign has been quite bizarre, including Aaron Ammons’ claim that winning a seat on the SURS Board by election makes him a “statewide elected official.”

Serious question - do students have the choice to vote at their college location or their family home? Or, are students limited to one spot. My vague recollection was I voted based on my parents’ home (by absentee ballot) when I was in college.

Yes students may choose where to vote. The Supreme Court decided this in 1979. I voted at home as well when I was in college, but it was a choice and since I knew the races better. Obviously you can only register at one location though.

Yes, of course. This particular kind of voter fraud happens all the time. I know because you said so. You have a citation on all of the college students in legal trouble for trying to vote twice, right?
Tired old rhetoric employed by several Champaign County Clerks to drive down student voting.
Again, when Republicans can’t win with their ideas, they cheat. If they let everyone vote who wanted to, they would lose every time.

WCIA (not Maxwell) reported on this and said about a hundred students were waiting in line and the wait was about an hour when they were there.
The best part, though, was that of the 40,000 students on campus or even the 100 in line, who did they grab for a standup? A handsome young man named Jack Londrigan from Springfield. You may have seen him on teevee lately.

This seems like as good a time as any to remind folks: IF YOU ARE IN LINE WHEN THE POLLS CLOSE, THEN THEY MUST ALLOW YOU TO VOTE.
Do NOT leave the polling place without voting.

In the case of my wife and myself, they have made it so easy to vote early, we did it last week when we knew there would be a short line. We would have voted anyway, so you can’t read much out of that.
That said, with the ease of voting, including registration, I think that benefits the Democratic candidates. I will also state it would have been easy to vote using someone else’s identity, which will definitely benefit Democrats. Vote early and vote often.

This issue is bi-partisan and is covered in election judge training. Bear in mind that the technological methods of comparing for duplicate registrations has improved significantly since this Slate article was written. It’s certainly not just college students who may make this mistake. It was the pictures of them embedded in this thread that prompted my comment, though.

Previously, the voter turnout at other on campus early voting venues was minuscule in mid term elections and cost tens of thousands of dollars to operate. Hence, no real pre-conceived dynamic in play there.
Oh, and Carol Ammons husband, a candidate for the open County Clerk position in Champaign County, is a convicted heroin dealer . . . . . .who wouldn’t want that guy counting the votes?

Wow, lots of local political axes being ground in this thread.
Anyone around Champaign County for years knows the Rs gerrymandered the Dems and suppressed student vote for decades. That Republican power structure still exists but is no longer in total control. The County Clerk office has been an exception, and while they have done some outreach to campus in the last few years, they have also also limited services as seen here. Perhaps time for leadership that is full throated for encouraging voting?
In the distant past, when I would go to my polling place on campus, there would have been only 10 or so voters by noon. So students generally didn’t turn out. I’m not sure why early voting is making such a large difference. Perhaps more excitement this term, or perhaps a little more flexibility is attractive, which seems typical of the younger set. Not always bad to have change, is it?
And to the mail in voters, please read Rich’s post on mail in votes being disallowed.
And what does a drug conviction decades ago have to do with voter fraud? Not typically connected issues. Another axe ground, I see.

If I remember correctly Gordy wanted to move a precinct from Illinois Street Residence Hall, to the Union 2 blocks away, while it was under renovation. This would not have an effect on early voting. Waiting 3 hours is outrageous but I never waited at all voting on campus when I went to my polling place on election day. Most of the time the ballots cast in the campus precincts were in the double digits. Some eucation might help alleviate the lines. My bet is it gets worse tomorrow.

The Mrs. and I voted on Oct 20th. Have been ranting at my family, including nieces and nephews, to vote for last 3 weeks.
There is no excuse for not voting.
If you don’t vote, you have lost your right to complain about the elected government. Your failure to vote makes you complicate in the policies put forth by the government.

Some well informed people choose not to vote because they are turned off by the choices they have been given (race for governor comes to mind). Staying home sends a message, same with skipping over spots on the ballot. I know a lot of folks do it because they actually know the individuals and and bring themselves to vote for either of them.
