Ives makes her case for 2022

* The governor’s political body isn’t even cold yet, but possible 2022 gubernatorial hopeful Todd Ricketts was on yesterday’s Republican Party fly-around. And today, Rep. Jeanne Ives’ spokesperson Kathleen Murphy writes this in National Review…

Ives’s candidacy demonstrated that Illinois Republicans gain ground quickly when they engage in ideological confrontation on cultural and economic issues.

Speaker Madigan and his machine may be powerful, but they are wholly unaccustomed to such confrontation from their Republican counterparts. Their ability to handle such an attack has never truly been tested.

ILGOP flacks might brush off the suggestion as “far-right extremism,” but Illinoisans know the difficulties they’re facing. For many, exhausted by the state’s onerous tax burden, lack of opportunity, and moral libertinism, an ILGOP with a strong contrasting vision, adherence to principle, revolutionary instincts, and simple grit would offer reason for optimism.

There are no guarantees. But as conservative talk-show host Dan Proft puts it, “As long as we’re still here, we might as well fight.”

In Illinois, conservatives have to embrace these challenges for the opportunities they must be. Nationally, the revolt against the big-government “swamp” has been messy. But the ground we now hold is precious. If Illinois offers any lesson to conservatives, it is this: Never Surrender.

    A Republican party that focuses on fiscal conservatism and social moderation could be formidable. Rauner ran and won on that message.

    His failure was that he failed to govern as such.

    Ives would be out of elected politics (possibly) for 4 years, and her last record in elected office is Right of where a majority of Illinois voters have gone, less Peter Fitzgerald, defeating the most vulnerable senator in America, Carol Mosley Braun.

  21. Proft, Tillman, Ives will continue to make money hand over fist conning the right wing and Uhlein.

    It will be interesting to see how the Ricketts/Baise experiment moves forward.

    Assuming Rauner loses and the General Assembly maintains the same DEM/GOP ratio, it appears the battle within the GOP continues to be a battle of attrition and erosion.

    The only hope for the GOP is the Progressive movement does the same to the DEMS. UGH!!!

  30. Ives vs Durbin (or any other dem if he decides to not run)? That works.

    Ives vs Pritzker? This works, too.

    She has shown she can stand up and fight for the values of freedom and personal responsibility.
    The politics of this century can be divided between those that think government should solve personal problems, and everyone else. This trend towards invasive statism has created too much dependence on government and ruins lives in the long run. Ives gets this and has a good voice to lead away from that disaster.

  33. Sounds interesting, but Harold does not want to play second fiddle, even against a business tycoon like Ricketts. She believe she is the main attraction, so I don’t see this working with her being on his ticket. The future of the IL GOP is going to be very interesting.

  37. Republicans can be small tent and irrelevant, or big tent and competitive. This is true on both the state and National levels. Imagine if we had President Kasich and Governor Dillard.

    I would love to hear Durbin defend the looming Pentagon audit findings, predicted to contain “unpleasant findings,” since he has either been the ranking member or chair of the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcomittee.

    What I do hear a lot about is white nationalist terrorists who sent bombs to prominent Democrats, killed 11 Jewish people in a synagogue, and racially-motivated killing in a Kroger in Kentucky. And that was just in the last two weeks.

  67. It rests on what the JB and his crew does during the next two years. Illinois is coming apart at the seams. Infrastructure is crumbling, population has not stabilized, government pension systems are in trouble, budgets (IL and Chicago are a joke), and social services are essentially non-existent. If the Dems decide to engage in good government then the Republicans are dead for another decade. But if all they do is raise taxes, bend over to government unions and don’t fix our most egregious problems the Republicans can attack and will get some traction. But not with Ives.

  68. The deficit went from 3% of GDP in 2008 to 10% of GDP in 2009 due to the TARP bank bailouts. It then dropped every year till 2015 when the deficit was 2.4 of the GDP in 2015. It started creeping up again in 2016 to 3.2 % of GDP. So Obama’s net effect was a .2% increase, not double. For comparison 2019 will be 4.7% of the GDP, which is almost Reaganesque.
