Random numbers

Posted in:

* This may or may not mean anything, but likely Chicago mayoral candidate Comptroller Susana Mendoza won the city with 696,596 votes. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, an already declared mayoral candidate, won the city with 674,357 votes.

So, Preckwinkle scored 22,239 fewer votes than Mendoza even though Preckwinkle was unopposed yesterday. There was obviously a sizable undervote.

Sheriff Tom Dart, by the way, is even lower on the ballot than Preckwinkle and was also unopposed and still got 711,564 votes, more than both Mendoza and Preckwinkle.

…Adding… A commenter mentioned something, so I checked it out. Mendoza received more votes than Preckwinkle in Preckwinkle’s own 4th Ward. And Sheriff Dart also outpolled Preckwinkle in that ward.

* By the way, the ward with the highest percentage turnout yesterday was the 47th, at 76.2 percent. The ward with the greatest numerical turnout was the 32nd, with 24,051. The Southwest Side’s 19th Ward was a close second.

* I asked the Chicago Board of Elections Commission for an age breakdown of yesterday’s vote…

Those are unofficial results as of 10:59 this morning.

  1. Susana has never faced opponents who were able to make attacks stick. She’s about to enter a race full of them.

  2. Preckwinkle has worn out her welcome. Mayors race will bear that out despite labors support.

  3. The 32nd Ward is on the NW side.

  4. Preckwinkle was the only candidate at my polling place in Chicago to get multiple (though invalid) write ins against her. One person wrote, “not her.”

She would have been the only candidate with any write ins at all, except for one committed hold out for Dan Biss at the top of the ticket.

  5. What’s telling is that other than Kaegi I think, all of the other countywide officials got more votes than Preckwinkle. That’s not a sign of an undervote, that’s a sign of people deliberately skipping over Toni. All of her sycophants better take note and lose the arrogance that this is a done deal.

    - “Susana has never faced opponents who were able to make attacks stick.” And Toni is about to learn that she’s not running against Todd or Fioretti this time.

  6. Preckwinkle’s bad record with high ranking staff is a commercial in the making. Judgment, supervision. never mind her Berrios coddling. Not good.

  7. ==The ward with the greatest numerical turnout was downtown’s 32nd, with 24,051==

That was the 42nd, not 32nd. 32nd is Bucktown, Wicker Park, Ukrainian Village, other North Side neighborhoods.

  8. Thanks, ToddAF. Still a bit off today.

  9. I skipped over my congressional race, no good options in my opinion. I also considered skipping over Preckwinkle. I will be supporting Mendoza for mayor.

  10. Toni support of Berrios is her downfall.

  11. Not sure you’re comparing apples to apples. Preckwinkle didn’t run any ads, no yard signs, nothing. I even forgot she was on the ballot until I voted.

  12. I’m rooting for Mendoza, mostly because I am not a Preckwinkle fan.

But am I the only one who thought Susana blew a great opportunity to introduce herself to Chicago voters last night by giving a lousy victory speech? Lot’s of Howard Dean-style yelling. My wife, (whom I expected to really like Susana,) asked “is she a little crazy?”

  13. As a city dweller, I wrote in against Toni (invalid, I knew) and voted against Mendoza, and will vote for nether of them for mayor, since I get no vote in who replaces them if they become mayor. It is the fault of state law, of course, but I oppose anyone who is even reasonably likely to step down and get an appointed replacement—even if I might like the appointee. It is anti-democratic.

  14. You can compare apples to apples with Toni and Dart. Both unopposed and neither ran ads.

  15. Hey Susana toadies, Preckwinckle was unopposed! That is what happens when a candidate does not have competition. It is fairly typical. Next time Susana runs it won’t be against a Republican, white woman from the suburbs. It will be against a Progressive, African American woman from the city. Let’s see how HDO Susana does against a real opponent for a change.

  16. I was in the crowd last night and she sounded no louder or quieter than all the, statewides, speaking up to be heard above the crowd in the big room. Uh, Paywall, Are you aware she ran against the Speaker’s operation twice to get her State House seat and was outspent $10 million to $3 million by the Rauner/Munger dirty tricks operation 2 years ago? I’d say she’s pretty battle-tested.

Comment by Exhausted Canvasser Wednesday, Nov 7, 18 @ 1:46 pm

  17. Mendoza is a better candidate than Preckwinkle in every way.

Younger and more charismatic with no pop tax baggage.

Wish I had just elected her my governor.

When I picture what Chicago Party Aunt would look and sound like, it’s Menzoda.

  19. ===That is what happens when a candidate does not have competition===

Oh, yeah, big brain? Did you notice that the unopposed Tom Dart outpolled them both?

    Go take a nap already.

  20. == Susana has never faced opponents who were able to make attacks stick. She’s about to enter a race full of them. ==

Did you miss the campaign for Comptroller in 2016? They threw everything they had at her and millions of dollars. Came up short. Big time. No one in this race will be able to spend millions against her either. Not enough money to go around and these candidates all have a lot of work to do to make their own case to voters.

So what if Toni wasn’t running ads? She was unopposed and Mendoza had to share voters with another candidate - and Susana still got more votes. What is also interesting is that Susana beat Toni in Toni’s own 4th Ward.

  21. Hi Rich - Ben Bradley just mentioned the blog and this article on Roe Conn’s show just now.

  23. == Let’s see how HDO Susana does against a real opponent for a change. ==

That’s funny given that the founder of HDO (Victor Reyes) is backing Toni.
