About yesterday’s Tom threat

Posted in:

* Heh…

Well. According to several sources, the bomb threat at the Capitol on Wednesday was prompted by a man named Tom who called the tourism desk to ask about visitors. The woman thought he said “bomb,” not Tom. #twill

All’s well that ends well.

* By the way, I asked the secretary of state’s spokesman why only the third and fourth floors were evacuated yesterday. I mean, couldn’t the would-be bomber (or, in this case, the Tomer) have been lying about where he placed the device?

I was told that these threats are taken on a case-by-case basis and it was “determined early on in this process that it was not a viable threat,” but that they nonetheless completed their due diligence.

I’m betting Tom asked about tours of the third and fourth floors.

  1. I would think a Tom Bowen or Tom Suffredin sighting would be sufficient cause to evacuate the building.

  2. Good thing his name wasn’t “Adam Tom.”

  3. OK, maybe they should book these tours on-line or better train their people. Not trying to pick on what I think are maybe even volunteers, but if you confuse the name of a caller for a threat to blow up the building, maybe you’re not the best person to be answering questions.

  8. That explanation seems off. That’s hard to believe. Your question about the partial evacuation is a good one, Rich.

  11. Once worked in a large 7 story building that had to be completely evacuated due to a fire. Turns out an employee burnt her microwave popcorn creating a whole lot of smoke.

  12. “Good Learning” as the Marines say when something goes really wrong and hard lessons learned.
When I was at Marine Expeditionary Force trading at Chaplain School, Staff Sargeant Sears made a mistake with our Land Navigation training that resulted in 42 Navy Chaplains “wondering in the wilderness” for six hours totally lost.
After they finally found us all he says to us “that was good learning today chaplains”.
    This stuff happens.
    It’s good to practice

Six hours? I’ve read stories from 40 days to 40 years wandering in the wilderness.

  15. Stones, I had a boss who repeatedly burned popcorn and we were in the bottom floor of a residence hall. She emptied the building out twice with the full fire department showing both times

  18. Six hours was enough to get several sermons out of it for each Chaplain. “I was lost but now I’m found” “I could only take 6 hours wondering” etc. As the sole Unitarian I of course had to go Transcendentalist about my own Massachusetts wilderness experience, ala Emerson ( we were on the military reservation on Cape Cod)
