Line starts forming for possible 2020 comptroller’s race

Posted in:

* Back in 1998, Sen. Chris Lauzen (R-Aurora) ran for comptroller. He won the primary, but lost the general to Dan Hynes. His Republican primary opponent ran a radio ad claiming Lauzen wasn’t a certified CPA, and after the election was over he attempted to have his named changed to “Christopher J. Lauzen, CPA.” He didn’t succeed.

Lauzen chose to run for reelection in 2002 rather than run for comptroller again. He ran for Congress and lost and then ran successfully for Kane County Board Chairman, where he is today.

* But should Comptroller Susana Mendoza win her Chicago mayor’s race, Gov. Pritzker would appoint her replacement and a special election would be held in 2020. So, Lauzen has apparently decided to plan ahead. He filed this paperwork earlier in the week

  4. I interacted with Mr. Lauzen once while he was a senator. And he sure acted like a guy who would change his name to add CPA.

  5. Chris Lauzen. For Comptroller.

    Of Illinois.

    In 2020.

Ha ah ha ha ha ah haha ha.

    (deep breath)

    Ha ha haha ha haha!

  6. Adding…he’s kind of like our own Ted Cruz, except he’s less likable.

  7. Gallactic Cupcake for the win.

  9. Trying to add CPA to his name was a LOL move, kind of respect it.

  10. Lauzen is a CPA.

    I remember that.

    The rest is quite forgettable.

One of the “Fab 5”. They were the Mavericks of the state senate.

    So… so long ago.

  11. Anybody that has ever interacted with Lauzen on a personal level would never vote for him. Male version of Ives.

Comment by Board Watcher Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 10:28 am

  14. Too bad Lauzen won’t need a running mate, he could ask Jack Franks to join him on the most disliked Illinois GA members ticket. Lauzen and Franks are first class south ends of a north bound horses.

  15. He’s wasting his money on a vanity project that only serves to keep his name in the mix.

Comment by VanillaMan Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 10:30 am

  16. What young GOP candidate could win here?
This month’s election seems to indicate that there aren’t any unless they agree to take Democratic stands on the issues.

Anyone want a conservative in any public office?

Comment by VanillaMan Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 10:34 am

  17. Right out of the gate he already ran afoul of disclosure requirements. He needs to include the name of the office he is seeking on this committee, and amend his County Board Committee to reflect the same. (10 ILCS 5/9-2) (from Ch. 46, par. 9-2)

Comment by Anonymous Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 10:35 am

  18. I am convinced that should it appear that a vacancy will occur, Madigan/Cullerton/JB will change the law again and the person appointed to the office will be able to fill out the remainder of the four year term. I’d put money on that bet.

Comment by Not It Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 10:41 am

  19. Lauzen is exactly what the Illinois GOP does not need.

Comment by Suburbs Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 10:47 am

  20. === I’d put money on that bet===

I don’t bet on these things, but if I did I’d take all your money.

A 2020 special is a great tuneup. President Trump will be on the ballot. You think Republicans are gonna do well statewide here? If Trump loses, the likely Democratic winner will have had a chance to boost his/her name ID in 20 ahead of a much more questionable 2022 cycle.

So, yeah, find someone to bet with if you dare.

  22. Recently Lauzen tried to get the Kane County Board to push our State’s Attorney Joe McMahon to ask for reimbursement of the costs for prosecuting Jason Van Dyke. Even though it’s apparently not legal. Or sane.

  23. ===Anyone want a conservative in any public office?===

I think that depends. Would it be someone in the mold of William F. Buckley or more like Sarah Palin? Or, to be more Illinois-centric: Peter Fitzgerald or Peter Breen?

Nominate a conservative who isn’t trying to turn the clock back on human rights and maybe you’ll see some support for such a candidate.

It sure seems like Dan Proft’s idea of conservative is wildly different from where Illinois voters are comfortable going. As long as that continues, no, no one wants a conservative in any public office in Illinois.

    Comment by 47th Ward Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 10:57 am

  24. I remember seeing Chris Lauzen in action during a Legislative Audit Commission (LAC) meeting. I can’t remember the agency, but he took a Director to task for very respectfully saying she disagreed that a finding was material.

If he’s ever Comptroller, I wonder if he’ll support being chewed out for questioning whether one exception out of 50 for a tiny dollar amount is a finding.

    Comment by ChiSox 4ever Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 11:13 am

  25. Hmm, lets rebuild the party…we need more crabby old white retread losers. Yeah, thats what the party needs, and the public wants.

Comptroller is important, but its also the farm team.

  26. Who is the least offensive replacement?

Comment by KOL Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 11:27 am

  27. Seems like a Mendoza win for Mayor would be a great opportunity to amend the Constitution to eliminate the office.

Paring a streamlining idea with a graduated income tax amendment would be a smart move.

Comment by El Conquistador Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 11:55 am

  30. ===Dan Hynes will be appointed Comptroller===

    LOL

Yeah, like he wants that job back. And like the governor will appoint an older white guy to replace a Latina.

    Don’t quit your day job.

  31. When he was in the Senate, I interacted with Senator Lousy. ‘Nuff said.

  32. >after the election was over he attempted to have his named changed to “Christopher J. Lauzen, CPA.” He didn’t succeed.

He aimed too low. Why not go for changing his name to “Comptroller Christopher J. Lauzen”?

Comment by Earnest Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 12:20 pm

  33. I heard rumor Alderman Gilbert Villegas would be a potential appointment - Pritzker would have to pick a Latino and Villegas has experience running a state agency.

  34. “certified CPA” is redundant.

    Ouch.

  37. ===Anybody that has ever interacted with Lauzen on a personal level would never vote for him.===

Apparently, they like him in Kane County. He won election 6 times in a row for IL Senate, and has been county board chairman since 2012. Not too much, though…he stands as one of the few people who has lost an election to Jim Oberweis. I won’t give him much credit for likeability, but he was one of the few people in the 90’s who saw the pension crisis coming and said anything about it.

Comment by Six Degrees of Separation Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 2:29 pm

  38. Kane County would vote overwhelmingly for him to assume state office. In Springfield. Far away from Geneva.

Comment by Jake From Elwood Friday, Nov 16, 18 @ 3:15 pm

  39. For VanillaMan, regarding my earlier comment:

    https://www.politico.com/story/2018/11/16/house-conservatives-lgbt-protection-trade-pact-977288

It’s these kind of “conservatives” that won’t get elected in Illinois ever again. If you want to continue to associate with them, feel free. But I think they’re giving the rest of the conservatives a very bad reputation.
